Google said on 28 October it is “launching the preview of our Connected Apps Platform, a unified way for more app developers to bring their capabilities directly into Gemini and Search”, with more than 50 Connected Apps already live between the two.
Its Connected Apps Policy says partners “must not serve any third party advertising content or promotional material through their integrations”. An X post by Elliot Garreffa, viewed more than 100,000 times, put the reach at 4.3 billion users; Sundar Pichai’s own figure this week was one billion Gemini app users, less than a quarter of that, by our arithmetic.

Business Pill · DISTRIBUTION ADVANTAGE
A short explainer on distribution advantage. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about Google’s Connected Apps.
The key insight: Google opened a preview that lets outside developers plug MCP tools into Gemini and Search, with more than 50 apps live, and its policy says partners must not serve third-party advertising through their integrations.
What Google Launched
Google’s blog post, by group product managers Chips Mistry and Mai Lowe, says developers “integrate with a cloud-hosted MCP server or Android MCP using the AppFunctions APIs”, then use the Google Connected Console to register, test and submit their app.
It says developers choose before review “whether it will go live in Search, the Gemini app, or both”, and that once live they can “track traffic, latency, and error rates”. Google says it is opening access in phases and will add more developers, markets and Google products “over the coming months”.
Google names Adobe, Experian, Localiza and Peloton as partners live in Gemini, says those apps come to Search “in the coming weeks”, and lists a new Calm integration across both.

What Was Posted on X
Elliot Garreffa’s X post (30 Oct) called Google’s Connected Apps launch ‘yet another app store moment’ and put the reach at 4.3 billion users across Gemini and AI Mode, his figure.
The Ads Rule
The policy adds that Connected Apps “must offer direct, meaningful utility and deliver distinct, standalone value that is completely free of any advertising content”. It says this “does not prohibit the inclusion of your own brand elements”.
On Alphabet’s earnings call on 29 October, the company said: “Today we are announcing the expansion of ads in AI Mode into international markets, alongside multi-turn ads in AI Mode in the U.S.” It also said “the strong growth in AI Mode queries had an impact because of the lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode”.
The Business Lever: Who Owns the Moment of Intent
Garreffa’s post called it “yet another app store moment” and said Google surfaces these tools at the moment of intent. Google’s own page says Connected Apps bring a service to users “right where and when they need it”.
We have covered the same shift from other sides: Reddit’s CEO saying AI Mode drives no traffic, Fiverr’s CEO saying the internet as we know it is dying, Google paying 400 publishers to license AI content and the shared AI training opt-out.
The Structural Read
As we read Google’s post, one integration can reach both Search and the Gemini app, and developers pick which surface before review.
As we read the policy, the apps may carry their own brand elements but no third-party advertising, while Alphabet said on its call it is expanding ads in AI Mode.
As we read the numbers, Pichai’s one billion Gemini app users is less than a quarter of the 4.3 billion in Garreffa’s post, by our arithmetic.

“must not serve any third party advertising content or promotional material through their integrations.”
Three Implications
FOR DEVELOPERS Google says developers integrate a cloud-hosted MCP server or Android MCP and register through the Google Connected Console.
FOR PARTNERS Google names Adobe, Experian, Localiza and Peloton as live in Gemini, with Search to follow in the coming weeks.
FOR THE ROLLOUT Google says it is opening access in phases and will add more developers, markets and Google products over the coming months.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Embedding Business Model.
The framework says “In the embedding era, value comes from what the software connects to.”
As we read it, Connected Apps is Google offering the connection point inside Gemini and Search; the framework predates Google’s 28 October post and does not discuss it.
What Is Not Established
Google’s post and developer pages do not state a revenue share, fees, or how Gemini and Search rank one Connected App against another. They do not give Connected Apps usage figures. The 4.3 billion figure is the X poster’s; we did not find it in Google’s materials.
The Bottom Line
Google opened a preview that lets outside developers plug MCP tools into Gemini and Search, with more than 50 apps live, and its policy bars those apps from carrying third-party ads. Pichai’s one billion Gemini users is less than a quarter of the 4.3 billion in Garreffa’s post, by our arithmetic.
95,000+ executives read Business Engineer for the AI strategy frameworks cited by ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.
A note on sourcing. Platform facts come from Google’s 28 October blog post, its Connected Apps developer pages and policy; the Gemini user figure comes from Alphabet’s 29 October earnings release and the AI Mode lines from its earnings call. The 4.3 billion figure is an X poster’s and is not from Google. We did not contact Google.
