The money behind the largest AI labs, and the terms they set, ran through the day’s news on 17 October 2026, by our grouping. Anthropic has offered Blackstone a coupon of 10% on $9 billion of junior debt in a $60 billion chip financing known as Project North Star, the Financial Times reported, citing people familiar with the negotiations. The Information reports that OpenAI had projected $2.4B of 2026 advertising revenue to investors and is likely to fall short of it; OpenAI itself said on 31 August that its ad business had reached a $1B annualized revenue run rate.
The other threads are security and the terms of access; agents and code; work and deals; and infrastructure and science. Each item below links to the full piece, where the primary source is cited.
Business Pill · FINANCIAL CONDITIONS
A one-minute explainer of financial conditions: how the cost and availability of credit move across markets. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this roundup.
The key insight: As we read it, the day’s coverage was about how the largest AI labs pay for what they build: Anthropic has offered Blackstone a 10% coupon on $9 billion of junior debt in a chip financing, the Financial Times reported, and The Information reports that OpenAI is likely to fall short of the $2.4B of 2026 ad revenue it projected to investors.
The Labs’ Money and Rules
According to Il Sole 24 Ore’s account of the FT report, the North Star financing is designed to support the procurement of approximately 1.5 gigawatts of customised chips developed by Google, and Anthropic raised around $4.4 billion through a similar transaction, Project Big Sky, at a rate of 8.5% four months earlier. Representatives for Anthropic have quietly pitched Capitol Hill lawmakers on a draft bill to regulate frontier AI safety and security, POLITICO reported, citing three people with knowledge of the efforts; under the confidential draft, the government could block a model’s release or use only if it poses a foreseeable, imminent risk of more than $1 billion in damages, or of killing or seriously injuring more than 50 people. The Structural Read
The financing terms come from reports: Il Sole 24 Ore’s account of the FT report says Anthropic raised around $4.4 billion through Project Big Sky at 8.5% four months earlier, and OpenAI itself said on 31 August that its ad business had reached a $1B annualized revenue run rate.
The rules around the labs moved too: POLITICO reported that Anthropic pitched lawmakers a draft bill with a $1 billion damages threshold, and The Verge reports that Meta removed language from its new commercial terms, which take effect on 30 October 2026.
On the build side, Anthropic’s Claude Code team says Claude writes about 90 percent of Claude Code’s own code, and OpenCode said its breach impacted 1.4% of OpenCode Console users who had external providers linked.

The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Subsidized AGI Economy.
The framework puts it this way: “The negative margin is not a leak. It is a procurement budget.”
As we read it, Saturday’s coverage shows two ways the labs fund that budget: debt priced by lenders, as in the reported Anthropic offer, and advertising, as in OpenAI’s reported $2.4B target.
What Is Not Established
This roundup adds no new reporting. Every figure above is taken from the linked FourWeekMBA piece, each of which was built from its own primary source. The five threads and the counts in our charts are our grouping, not a finding.
We do not claim that these stories are connected or that one caused another. The Anthropic financing terms, OpenAI’s ad target and the Trail of Bits talks rest on outlets’ reports; on the draft bill, an Anthropic spokesperson told POLITICO it represents the proposals in the company’s Advanced AI Framework. The $44 trillion figure comes from an internal model which, as we read it, matches the top scenario of Anthropic’s explorer, and benchmark results are the authors’ own.
The Bottom Line
Anthropic has offered a 10% coupon on $9 billion of junior chip debt, the FT reported, and The Information reports that OpenAI is likely to fall short of a $2.4B ad target after a $1B run rate in late August.
The day’s coverage also includes OpenCode’s breach affecting 1.4% of its Console users, Meta’s edit to its commercial terms, and Claude writing about 90 percent of Claude Code’s own code, by the team’s account.
95,000+ executives read Business Engineer for the AI strategy frameworks cited by ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.
