OpenAI Ads Hit $1B Run Rate, Behind Its $2.4B 2026 Target

The Information reports that OpenAI had projected $2.4B of 2026 advertising revenue to investors and is likely to fall short of it. OpenAI itself said on 31 August that its ad business had reached a $1B annualized revenue run rate.

According to The Information’s report, as summarised by Dealroom, OpenAI is cutting prices and hiring heavily from Meta to grow the business: one agency founder put ChatGPT ads at about $5 a click, against $30 to $50 on Google for comparable business clients.

Business Pill · RUN-RATE REVENUE

A Business Engineer explainer on run-rate revenue, the annualised figure behind OpenAI’s $1B. It explains the concept in general and says nothing about OpenAI’s ad business.

The key insight: As we read it, the gap is between two different measures: a $1B run rate that annualises one stretch of late August, and a $2.4B full-year projection for 2026, which The Information reports OpenAI is likely to miss while it cuts prices to about $5 a click.

The Numbers in the Report

The Information’s figures, as Dealroom summarises them: annualised ad revenue hit $1B in late August, and OpenAI had projected $2.4B of 2026 ad revenue to investors. The report says OpenAI is likely to fall short of that projection.

Advertisers rose to about 60,000 in early October from 20,000 in late August, according to New Street Research as cited in the report. Ads run in more than 60 countries.

On price, the report cites about $5 a click versus $30 to $50 on Google for comparable B2B clients, according to one agency founder quoted in the report.

OpenAI’s ad business, in billions of US dollars: the $1B annualized run rate OpenAI announced on 31 August 2026 (reported by CNBC), against the $2.4B of 2026 ad revenue OpenAI projected to investors, according to The Information’s 15 October report as summarised by Dealroom. A run rate annualises one period; the projection is a full-year figure, so the two are different measures.

The Information’s post on 17 October re-promoting its 15 October report: it says OpenAI’s ad business reached a $1 billion annualized run rate in late August but could miss its 2026 sales target, and that OpenAI is cutting prices and recruiting heavily from Meta. This piece is built on that report, read through Dealroom’s summary.

What OpenAI Said in August

On 31 August OpenAI announced that its advertising business had hit $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate, a milestone CNBC reported the company was touting as proof of its “diversified business model.”

CNBC reported that OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the U.S. in February, that ads appear for its Go subscribers and its free tier, and that OpenAI said its ads are clearly labeled and do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.

“Our next phase of growth will bring ChatGPT Ads to more markets and introduce additional formats, objectives, buying options, and measurement capabilities,” OpenAI said in a release, according to CNBC.

The Team Behind the Push

The report puts OpenAI’s ad team at about 140 people, nearly half hired between July and September according to Crustdata, with Meta the biggest single source of hires. It says the team has been reorganised seven times since ads launched in February, citing two people familiar.

After Fidji Simo stepped back from her full-time role in early July, ad chief Dave Dugan, who spent 12 years at Meta, reorganised sales into industry verticals plus an agency team, according to the report. Senior hires named include Mitch Pilar, Andy Sinn and Mark Bambury, head of ads for EMEA since late September.

OpenAI now targets small and midsize businesses through outsourcers TP, Concentrix and Accenture, and has added image ads and outside measurement partners, the report says.

The Caveats in the Report

The report lists limits on the growth story: most advertisers still spend test budgets of 1% to 5% of annual spend, and advertisers call the targeting a “black box”. Adthena found about 1 in 9 of roughly 187,000 placements unrelated to the user’s query, according to the report.

It also notes that Sensor Tower’s estimate of a 40% rise in October US spend is extrapolated.

Where This Sits

We reported on OpenAI’s plan to test visual ChatGPT ads and widen ad measurement, and on its overall revenue run rate. The ad business is the newest of the revenue lines CNBC listed alongside enterprise offerings, consumer subscriptions and usage-based APIs.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the report describes a business buying volume: prices of about $5 a click against $30 to $50 on Google, advertisers up from 20,000 to about 60,000, and most of them still spending test budgets of 1% to 5% of annual spend.

As we read it, the hiring is the other lever: a team of about 140 people, nearly half hired between July and September, with Meta the biggest source and Dave Dugan, 12 years at Meta, running sales.

As we read it, OpenAI’s own August framing and the report point the same way: OpenAI called the $1B a sign of a “diversified business model,” and the report’s caveats, such as a targeting “black box”, show how early that line still is.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Subsidized AGI Economy.

The framework describes the labs’ consumer economics this way: “The trade is geometric on the cost side, linear on the revenue side, and the labs are sitting on a multi-year barbell.”

As we read it, the framework is about heavy usage on paid subscription plans, where cost falls faster than price; ads add a separate revenue line on ChatGPT’s Go and free tiers, where CNBC reports the ads appear. The framework was published in June 2026 and does not discuss ChatGPT ads.

What Is Not Established

The Information’s article is behind a subscription; we read it through Dealroom’s summary and did not see the full text. The $2.4B figure is OpenAI’s projection to investors as the report describes it, not a public OpenAI target, and we did not contact OpenAI.

The $1B is a run rate, an annualised figure for one period, and the $2.4B is a full-year projection; the two are different measures. The per-click prices come from one agency founder.

The Bottom Line

OpenAI’s ad business reached a $1B annualized run rate in late August, and The Information reports it is likely to fall short of the $2.4B of 2026 ad revenue OpenAI projected to investors.

The report describes price cuts to about $5 a click, a team of about 140 people drawn heavily from Meta, and advertisers still testing with small budgets.
