Thariq Shihipar, who worked on Claude Code at Anthropic, said in a post on X on 24 October 2026 that Thariq has left the company. “I’ve left Anthropic after more than a year of working on Claude Code and seeing it scale larger than I ever imagined,” Thariq wrote. Thariq gave no reason for leaving and did not name a next role; Thariq said it is “time for a bit of a break before diving into something new.”
The exit comes as Anthropic prepares to go public. IFR reported on 15 October, citing one person familiar with the process, that Anthropic plans to file publicly with the Securities and Exchange Commission on 26 October and aims to list in mid-November. Anthropic has not commented on the departure in anything we read.
Business Pill · THE MODEL AND THE HARNESS
A short Business Engineer explainer on the difference between an AI model and the harness around it. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about the people in this piece.
The key insight: As we read it, the post confirms one departure and only one: Thariq says in Thariq’s own words that Thariq has left, while the second name in circulation, Anthony Morris, rests on a tracking account and a relay post.
Update (24 Oct): Anthony Morris has confirmed Morris left. In Morris’s own post on X at 12:33 UTC on 24 October, Morris wrote: “Yesterday was my last day at Anthropic.” Morris wrote that Morris created Claude Code on desktop and that Morris will share what is next soon; Morris gave no reason for leaving.
This piece, published at 12:45 UTC, treated Morris’s exit as unconfirmed; Morris’s post confirms it. We cover it in a follow-up piece.
What Thariq Wrote
Thariq’s X profile, read on 24 October, still reads “Claude Code @anthropicai”. The post is warm about the company Thariq is leaving. “I have really loved working at Ant and believe deeply in the mission, and most of all, the idea of a race to the top,” Thariq wrote.
Thariq described Thariq’s colleagues as “the most talented, thoughtful, competent, and earnest people I have ever met,” and added: “I am glad they are at the wheel and trust them deeply.” To Thariq’s followers on X Thariq wrote that they had made this “the most fun (and sometimes stressful) job I’ve ever had.”
Thariq closed by pointing readers to other people for Claude Code content: Addy Osmani, Lydia Hallie, Cat Wu, the ClaudeDevs account “and of course @bcherny who started it all”, a reference to Boris Cherny, whom our June piece called the creator of Claude Code.

What Was Posted on X
Thariq’s own post of 24 October 2026, the primary source for this piece. Thariq says Thariq has left Anthropic after more than a year working on Claude Code and is taking a break before something new.
Shihipar’s reply on X to @poteto: a salute emoji and “time to install pstack”.
International Cyber Digest (@IntCyberDigest) reports that an anonymous X account posted about Thariq Shihipar’s exit from Anthropic more than four hours before Shihipar announced it, and that Shihipar then confirmed leaving and asked Gmail to stop people scanning for deactivated email addresses.
A Second Name, Not Confirmed
A tracking account on X, Arfur Grok, posted at 00:39 UTC on 24 October that Anthony Morris “has left Anthropic.” A later relay post by the X account @abhijitwt said Morris, “who helped ship the Claude Code desktop app, has reportedly left too, though he hasn’t confirmed it himself.”
We could not confirm it. Morris’s own X profile, read on 24 October, still reads “created claude code on desktop @anthropicAI”, and we found no post from Morris or statement from Anthropic about a departure. We treat Morris’s exit as unconfirmed.
Where Claude Code Stands
Ramp data shows how widely Claude Code is bought. In our 14 October piece, 87% of businesses that bought a coding agent in the past 12 months bought Claude Code, according to Ramp Rate pages last updated on 12 October.
In our 17 October piece, the Claude Code team said in a blog post that Claude writes about 90 percent of Claude Code’s own code. From June to September, the team said, merged pull requests more than doubled while the share that had to be reverted fell by more than 40 percent.
Anthropic’s Listing Plans
According to the person IFR cited, Anthropic plans to launch its public roadshow on 9 November and price the deal the following week, and is targeting up to $100 billion at a $2 trillion valuation. Those plans come from a single unnamed person, as IFR reported them.
CNBC wrote on 13 October that Anthropic is preparing for what could be the largest initial public offering in history. Reuters reported on 15 October that some investors who attended Anthropic’s investor day discussed a valuation of around $1.5 trillion, below the roughly $2 trillion previously expected.
What We Know, Source by Source

Connecting the Coverage
On 20 October we covered the IPO timetable alongside the draft prospectus revenue figures. Our CNBC piece of 13 October reported Anthropic’s plan to share its first third-quarter figures with IPO investors. Our Ramp piece and our code-review piece cover Claude Code’s reach and how the team builds it, and our Cherny piece covers its creator’s view of agent loops.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the post says what Thariq chose to say and no more: more than a year on Claude Code, praise for the mission and Thariq’s colleagues, and a break before something new. It names no reason, no last day and no destination.
As we read it, the link to the IPO is one of timing on the calendar, not of cause: IFR’s source put the public SEC filing two days after Thariq’s post, and nothing we read connects the two.
As we read it, Thariq’s closing list works as a pointer for readers: Thariq directs anyone who wants Claude Code content to five accounts, ending with Boris Cherny, “who started it all”.
Thariq, on X, 24 October 2026
“For me, it is time for a bit of a break before diving into something new.”
Three Implications
FOR ANTHROPIC No statement from the company about either name appears in anything we read; IFR’s source put its public SEC filing on 26 October.
FOR CLAUDE CODE USERS Thariq pointed followers to five other accounts for Claude Code content, including Boris Cherny, whom our June piece called its creator.
FOR THE MORRIS REPORT Until Anthony Morris or Anthropic says otherwise, Morris’s exit rests on a tracking account and a relay post; Morris’s X profile still lists Anthropic.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Agentic Harness War.
The framework states: “The surface, not the model, governs autonomy.”
As we read it, Claude Code is the kind of agentic surface the framework describes: in our Ramp piece, 87% of businesses that bought a coding agent bought it. The framework was published on 1 July 2026 and does not discuss these departures.
What Is Not Established
In the texts we read, Thariq did not say when the last day was, why they left or where they are going. Whether Anthony Morris has left is not established: the claim rests on a tracking account and a relay post, and Morris’s profile still lists Anthropic. Anthropic has said nothing about either name in anything we read, and none of the IPO reports we cite mentions either person.
The Bottom Line
Thariq says Thariq has left Anthropic after more than a year on Claude Code and is taking a break before something new. A second departure, Anthony Morris, is reported but unconfirmed. Both reports land as IFR’s source puts Anthropic’s public filing on 26 October and its listing in mid-November.

A note on sourcing. This piece rests on Thariq’s own post on X of 24 October 2026, the X posts of a tracking account (Arfur Grok) and a relay account (@abhijitwt), Anthony Morris’s X profile and our own earlier pieces, all read on 24 October. Thariqโs words are quoted as posted. Anthony Morris’s departure is reported, not confirmed. IPO timing is as IFR reported it from one unnamed person. We did not contact Anthropic, Thariq or Morris.
