Anthropic generated around $16.3 billion in revenue in the six months ended 30 June 2026, according to a draft initial public offering prospectus viewed by The Wall Street Journal, which reported the figures on 20 October 2026. Six days earlier, Anthropic told prospective IPO investors that its third-quarter revenue was $16.8 billion, Reuters and the Financial Times reported. On those two reports, one quarter brought in more than the whole first half.
The two figures come from different places: the first-half number is from the draft prospectus as the Journal reported it, and the third-quarter number is from accounts of a private investor meeting. Below we set them side by side, show how the quarters add up, and lay out the IPO timetable that IFR reported.
Business Pill · RUN-RATE REVENUE
A short explainer on run-rate revenue, what an annualised figure does and does not mean. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this story.
The key insight: As we read it, the two reports put Anthropic’s third quarter, at $16.8 billion as Reuters reported it, above the around $16.3 billion the Journal reported from the draft prospectus for the whole first half.
Two Sources, One Revenue Curve
Reuters, citing an investor who attended the 14 October meeting, put Anthropic’s revenue at $4.7 billion in the first quarter of 2026, $11.6 billion in the second and $16.8 billion in the third. The Financial Times put the second quarter at $11.5 billion, as Yahoo Finance reported it.
On Reuters’ quarterly figures, the first two quarters add up to $16.3 billion, our arithmetic, which is the same as the “around $16.3 billion” the Journal reported from the draft prospectus for the first half. That makes the third quarter, at $16.8 billion, about $0.5 billion larger than the first half, also our arithmetic.
For scale, the Journal reported that Anthropic generated $4.6 billion in revenue in all of 2025 and $1.1 billion in the first half of 2025. The third quarter alone is about 3.7 times the full-year 2025 figure, our arithmetic.

The Slowdown Investors Noticed
The same numbers show growth slowing from quarter to quarter. IFR reported that the third quarter’s 45% increase from $11.6 billion “marks a slowdown from growth of more than 140% between the first and second quarters.”
According to the people Reuters spoke to, “some investors were disappointed by the slowing sequential growth rate in the latest quarter.” Reuters said the third-quarter numbers “assuaged some concerns about the massive costs of developing AI systems.”
Gil Luria, head of technology research at DA Davidson, estimates that annual recurring revenue at the end of the third quarter was $74 billion but could still hit $100 billion by the end of the year, IFR reported. Luria called the revenue slowdown a “disappointment”, according to IFR.
The IPO Timetable
Anthropic plans to file documents publicly with the Securities and Exchange Commission on 26 October, with the aim of going public in mid-November, a person familiar with the process told IFR in a report published on 15 October. According to that person, Anthropic plans to launch its public roadshow on 9 November and price the deal the following week, and is targeting up to $100 billion at a $2 trillion valuation.
Those plans come from a single unnamed person, as IFR reported them. Reuters reported on 15 October that some investors who attended the meeting discussed a valuation of around $1.5 trillion, according to people familiar with the matter, below the roughly $2 trillion previously expected. The Journal said the IPO could help Anthropic reach a valuation of $2 trillion. Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs are joint bookrunners, IFR reported.
Connecting the Coverage
Earlier today we covered the draft prospectus itself, including the $80.7 billion first-half net loss, of which $72 billion resulted from accounting charges tied to convertible notes and other instruments, as the Journal reported. On 14 October we covered the quarterly figures Anthropic told investors about, and on 15 October we covered investors weighing a $1.5 trillion IPO value. On 13 October we reported that Anthropic was set to share its first third-quarter financials with IPO investors.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the quarterly figures Reuters reported and the first-half total the Journal reported line up: $4.7 billion plus $11.6 billion is $16.3 billion, our arithmetic.
As we read it, the growth rate is the other half of the story: IFR reported a 45% third-quarter increase after more than 140% between the first and second quarters, and Reuters said some investors were disappointed by the slowing rate.
As we read it, the third-quarter figure remains an investor account rather than a filed number, while the IFR timetable, from one person familiar, puts a public filing on 26 October.

Three Implications
$16.8B IN ONE QUARTER Anthropic told investors its third-quarter revenue was $16.8 billion, Reuters and the FT reported.
~$16.3B IN SIX MONTHS The Journal reported around $16.3 billion in revenue for the six months ended 30 June 2026, from the draft prospectus.
26 OCTOBER Anthropic plans to file publicly with the SEC on 26 October, a person familiar with the process told IFR.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The CFO’s Guide to the Token Economy.
The framework describes the token this way: “It is simultaneously the unit of cognition the model produces, the unit of compute the data center serves, the unit of price the lab charges, and the unit of value the enterprise extracts.”
As we read it, a quarter that out-earned the previous half-year is what that frame looks like in a lab’s revenue line, as the reports describe it. The framework was published in June 2026 and does not discuss Anthropic’s figures.
What Is Not Established
The third-quarter figure is not from a filing: it comes from Reuters’ and the FT’s accounts of what Anthropic told investors, and the draft prospectus as the Journal reported it covers the first half only. The FT’s $11.5 billion for the second quarter differs from Reuters’ $11.6 billion; on the FT figure, the first two quarters add up to $16.2 billion, our arithmetic. The Journal reported the first half as “around” $16.3 billion, so the comparison rests on rounded numbers. We have not seen the draft prospectus, and the IFR timetable comes from one unnamed person.
The Bottom Line
On the Journal’s report of the draft prospectus and Reuters’ account of the investor meeting, Anthropic’s $16.8 billion third quarter was larger than its roughly $16.3 billion first half. As we read it, the comparison rests on two different kinds of source, a draft prospectus and accounts of a private meeting; IFR reported that a public filing is planned for 26 October.

A note on sourcing. First-half and 2025 figures come from The Wall Street Journal’s 20 October 2026 report on Anthropic’s draft IPO prospectus, read in full; we have not seen the draft itself. Quarterly figures come from Reuters’ and the Financial Times’ accounts of a 14 October investor meeting, via our earlier piece, and the timetable from IFR’s 15 October report. Comparisons marked “our arithmetic” are ours. The chart mixes those sources and labels each. Nothing here is financial or investment advice.
