ChatGPT Pro Now Includes API Credits Equal to Its Full Price

OpenAI said on 28 October 2026 that “eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers can claim up to $500 per month in API credits to build apps and agents”, in a post from its OpenAI Developers account on X. Its help-center article lists the monthly allowance for each Pro tier as the same dollar figure as the tier: $100, $200 and $500.

By our arithmetic, that makes the full-period credit equal to 100% of the tier’s monthly price for all three Pro tiers. For Business, OpenAI pools $20 per paid Standard seat and $100 per paid Premium seat, capped at $500 per monthly billing period.

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on usage-based pricing. It explains the general idea only and does not discuss OpenAI’s API credits.

The key insight: By our arithmetic, each of OpenAI’s three Pro tiers now carries a full-period monthly API allowance equal to 100% of the tier’s price, while a Business workspace reaches its $500 cap at 25 paid Standard seats or 5 paid Premium seats.

What OpenAI Is Offering

According to OpenAI’s help-center article, “The included plans are Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500, and eligible Business workspaces with paid Standard or Premium seats.” It says “Plus, free trials subscriptions do not qualify for this offer” and that “Enterprise, Edu and legacy Codex seats are not established eligible plans or seats for this offer.”

The article lists the full-period allowances as “$100 per monthly billing period” for the Pro $100 tier, $200 for the $200 tier and $500 for the $500 tier. For Business it lists “$20 per paid Standard seat, pooled for the workspace”, “$100 per paid Premium seat, pooled for the workspace” and a cap of “$500 total per monthly billing period across Standard and Premium contributions”. Business workspaces billed annually upfront are “capped at $6,000 per annual billing cycle”.

The subscription “must have been active for at least 7 days before claiming”, and the grant “funds one linked API organization”. OpenAI says “Your first grant is prorated for the time remaining in the paid billing period.”

What Was Posted on X

OpenAI Developers’ post says that starting today, eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers can claim up to $500 per month in API credits to build apps and agents.

What the Credits Cover, and What They Do Not

OpenAI says the free credits cover “paid API Platform usage billed to the linked organization, including Responses and Chat Completions, Agents, Decisions, GPT-Live and Realtime, Images, and built-in tools”. It also says “This benefit does not cover Codex usage through API keys” and that the credits “do not increase your ChatGPT or signed-in Codex usage limits.”

“Monthly grants expire at the end of the subscription billing cycle. Unused credits do not roll over,” the article says. It adds that “The benefit may change or be removed in the future.”

The Business Math

By our arithmetic, the $500 monthly Business cap is reached at 25 paid Standard seats ($20 each) or 5 paid Premium seats ($100 each). OpenAI’s own example: “5 Standard seats and 3 Premium seats contribute $100 + $300 = $400.” The $6,000 annual cap equals 12 times the $500 monthly cap, also our arithmetic.

As we read the article, the offer turns part of a ChatGPT subscription into prepaid API usage: OpenAI says “Promotional credits are used before purchased API credits”, and when no credits remain, requests “fail with HTTP 429” until paid credits are added.

The Structural Read

As we read the help-center article, the credit is a separate balance for one linked API organization: OpenAI says it “does not increase your ChatGPT or signed-in Codex usage allowance”.

OpenAI says “Promotional credits are used before purchased API credits” and that “Monthly grants expire at the end of the subscription billing cycle”.

The article says “The benefit may change or be removed in the future”, and that availability “depends on the enabled cohort and country”.

Three Implications

FOR PRO SUBSCRIBERS OpenAI’s article lists the Pro allowances as $100, $200 and $500 per monthly billing period, and says the first grant is prorated.

FOR BUSINESS ADMINS The person activating “must own both the ChatGPT workspace and the receiving API organization”, according to OpenAI.

FOR DEVELOPERS OpenAI says the credits cover “Responses and Chat Completions, Agents, Decisions, GPT-Live and Realtime, Images, and built-in tools” but not “Codex usage through API keys”.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The CFO’s Guide to the Token Economy.

The framework describes the token as “the unit of cognition the model produces, the unit of compute the data center serves, the unit of price the lab charges, and the unit of value the enterprise extracts”.

The framework does not discuss OpenAI’s API credits offer.

What Is Not Established

OpenAI’s post and article do not say how many subscribers are eligible or what the offer costs OpenAI. The article says availability “depends on the enabled cohort and country”. The Business seat prices are not in the article, so we do not compute the Business credit as a share of seat price.

The Bottom Line

Eligible ChatGPT Pro subscribers can now claim monthly API credits equal to their tier’s price, $100 to $500, and Business workspaces up to $500 a month, according to OpenAI. The credits expire each billing cycle and do not cover Codex usage through API keys.
