Amazon Now Lists 250M Products It Doesn’t Sell, 2.5x March

Amazon now has 250 million listings that link to products sold on other sites, about 2.5 times as many as in March, The Information reported on 28 October 2026 in an exclusive by Catherine Perloff. The publication said Amazon has stepped up its Shop Direct initiative, “potentially giving shoppers less reason to turn to outside AI tools that can buy across retailers.”

In plain words: instead of letting outside shopping agents onto its site, Amazon is bringing other stores’ products onto Amazon. The Information said that “for more than a year, Amazon has blocked outside shopping agents from its site”, and that a new wave of AI assistants like Meta’s Muse “is raising the stakes.”

Business Pill · Agentic Commerce

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on agentic commerce: AI agents that search and buy on a shopperโ€™s behalf. It explains the general idea only and does not discuss Amazonโ€™s Shop Direct.

The key insight: As we read it, Amazon is answering outside shopping agents by bringing other stores’ products inside its own store, with 250 million such listings by The Information’s count, rather than letting those agents onto its site.

What The Information Reported

Amazon Shop Direct: over 100 million products from more than 400,000 merchants in March 2026, per Amazon; 250
Amazon Shop Direct: over 100 million products from more than 400,000 merchants in March 2026, per Amazon; 250 million listings linking to products sold elsewhere in October 2026, about 2.5 times as many as in March, per The Information. Sources: Amazon, 11 Mar 2026; The Information, 28 Oct 2026.
  • 250 million listings. Amazon now has 250 million listings that link to products sold elsewhere, about 2.5 times as many as in March, according to The Information.
  • More prominent placement. The publication said Amazon is highlighting the goods more prominently through curated style edits and other displays on its site.
  • The reason given. The Information described Shop Direct as promoting products from brands that don’t sell on Amazon’s site, which it said potentially gives shoppers less reason to use outside AI tools that can buy across retailers.

What Amazon Said in March

Amazon’s own post of 11 March 2026 gives the starting point. It said Shop Direct “now includes over 100 million products from more than 400,000 merchants, with tens of millions of products available to purchase through the AI-powered Buy for Me feature.”

  • Two buttons. According to Amazon, shoppers can tap “Shop Direct” to go to the merchant’s website or, for eligible products, tap “Buy for Me” to have Amazon complete the purchase on their behalf with their primary Amazon address and card.
  • Merchant feeds. Amazon said merchants can sync catalogue, pricing and inventory through feed syndicators including Feedonomics, Salsify and CEDCommerce, and that their products can surface in search results and in Rufus, its AI shopping assistant.
  • Opt-out. Amazon said merchants can visit the Shop Direct Merchant page to learn about the program or opt out of it.

By our arithmetic, 250 million is 2.5 times the “over 100 million” products Amazon cited in March, consistent with The Information’s “about 2.5 times”. Amazon’s March post counts products and The Information counts listings, so the two may not measure exactly the same thing.

Two Retail Answers to Shopping Agents

TechCrunch reported on 21 October 2026 that Walmart took the opposite route. It said Walmart launched Agent Gateway, an MCP server that lets approved AI agents search its inventory and buy on a shopper’s behalf, plus Agent Profiles that let customers approve each purchase or set a spending limit. TechCrunch described Walmart’s approach as differing from Amazon’s, which it said has responded to AI agents by locking them out.

  • Amazon: keeps outside agents off its site, per The Information and TechCrunch, and lists other stores’ products inside its own store, with its own Buy for Me agent completing some purchases.
  • Walmart: lets approved agents in through Agent Gateway under agent-specific terms, according to TechCrunch, which said Walmart had already announced a partnership with Meta’s Muse.

Connecting the Coverage

On 19 October we reported that AI agents buy through Stripe as JPMorgan and Amazon bar them: Amazon began blocking Muse from its retail site, according to CNBC, Bloomberg and TechCrunch, while Stripe’s Link wallet powered about 200 AI agents, per Upstarts Media. On 28 October we reported that Stripe lets AI agents buy on a budget, with Stripe saying agentic purchases made with Link grew 38x over the past month.

What’s new: The Information puts a number on Amazon’s side of the fight. Instead of opening the door to agents, Amazon has grown the outside catalogue inside its own store to 250 million listings. The agents it is competing with are the ones we covered in the personal-agent race between OpenAI and Meta and in our comparison of Muse and ChatGPT usage.

The Structural Read

As we read it, Shop Direct keeps the search on Amazon even when the product is sold elsewhere: Amazon says shoppers either go to the merchant’s site or let Buy for Me complete the purchase.

TechCrunch reported that Walmart lets approved agents in through Agent Gateway, under its own terms for agents; The Information reported that Amazon has kept outside shopping agents off its site for more than a year.

The Information named Meta’s Muse among the new AI assistants raising the stakes; we reported on 19 October that Amazon began blocking Muse from its retail site, according to CNBC, Bloomberg and TechCrunch.

Amazon, 11 March 2026

“Our vision is that whenever a customer asks for a specific brand or product on Amazon, we can help them find it and buy itโ€”even if that product is only available in another store.”

Three Implications

FOR MERCHANTS Amazon says merchants can join Shop Direct through feeds from Feedonomics, Salsify or CEDCommerce, or opt out through the Shop Direct Merchant page.

FOR AI SHOPPING AGENTS The Information reported that Amazon has blocked outside shopping agents from its site for more than a year.

FOR SHOPPERS Amazon says Buy for Me completes eligible purchases from other stores with the shopper’s primary Amazon address and card.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Agentic Harness War.

The framework’s starting point: “The surface, not the model, governs autonomy.”

As we read it, Amazon is defending its shopping surface: it keeps outside agents off the site, per The Information, and puts its own Buy for Me agent and other stores’ products inside it. The framework was published in July 2026 and does not discuss Amazon’s Shop Direct.

What Is Not Established

We read only The Information’s free summary; we do not know what the paywalled part says about sales through Shop Direct, how many purchases go through Buy for Me, or what Amazon earns on those referrals. Amazon’s March post counts “products” and The Information counts “listings”. Amazon has not published a 250 million figure on its own site that we could find. We did not contact Amazon.

A note on sourcing. The 250 million figure and the comparison with March come from The Information’s free summary of its paywalled report. Shop Direct’s March figures and how the program works come from Amazon’s 11 March 2026 post. Walmart’s Agent Gateway is described as reported by TechCrunch. The 2.5x check is our arithmetic.
