May 2021 ยท FoundingFounded; $124M Series A$124M

Anthropic says it was founded in 2021 by a team of researchers. It announced a $124 million Series A led by Jaan Tallinn, with siblings Dario Amodei (CEO) and Daniela Amodei (President) leading the company.

Why it mattered: It started as a research lab with no product. For almost two years the business was spending money on research and selling nothing.

Anthropic announced a $580 million Series B led by Sam Bankman-Fried, then CEO of FTX. The S-1 shows $982 million of Series B preferred stock in total, all at $11.23 a share.

Why it mattered: Training frontier models costs far more than a seed lab can raise. This was the first round big enough to pay for that.

Anthropic published 'Constitutional AI: Harmlessness from AI Feedback', a method for training a model against a written set of principles. The idea became Claude's published constitution, whose 22 Jan 2026 version ranks four properties in order: broadly safe, broadly ethical, compliant with Anthropic's guidelines and genuinely helpful.

Anthropic picked Google Cloud as a cloud provider. The Financial Times reported that Google had invested about $300 million for about 10% of the company in late 2022.

Feb 2026 ยท Washington and courtsThe clash with the Pentagon

The S-1 says that in February 2026, after Anthropic publicly said its technology should not be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons, the President directed federal agencies to stop using it, and the Secretary of War moved to designate Anthropic a 'supply-chain risk to national security'. A federal court in California largely ruled for Anthropic on 27 Aug 2026. On 25 Sep 2026 the D.C. Circuit upheld one of the designations, 2-1.

Why it mattered: A US government customer and its contractors were put off-limits, the case is still unresolved, and it sits in the S-1 as a risk factor.

The S-1 shows a Google commitment of at least about $114.5 billion (Apr 2026 to Jul 2033) and Broadcom TPU equipment leases with about $161.2 billion of rent.

Minimum guaranteed commitments were about $265.6 billion at 30 Jun 2026, up from $54.6 billion of non-cancelable commitments at the end of 2025.

Three turning points

1. Taking cloud money (2023 to 2024)

Anthropic took $8B from Amazon and up to $2B in notes from Google, and both investors were also its compute suppliers. That gave it chips without building its own data centres at first, and a multi-cloud setup that later let Claude sell on all three big clouds. The cost: today it owes at least $110.0B to AWS and about $114.5B to Google, whatever its actual usage.

2. Betting on coding agents (2025)

Claude Code went from research preview (Feb 2025) to over $500M of run-rate (Sep 2025) to over $2.5B (Feb 2026). Pay-per-use revenue went from 75% to 83% of the total, because agents use tokens around the clock, not just when someone is chatting.

3. Saying no to Washington (2026)

Anthropic held to its limits on mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. Federal agencies were told to stop using Claude, and the Pentagon designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk. Revenue still grew from $4.7B in Q1 2026 to $11.6B in Q2; the S-1 does not link the two, and neither do we. The legal fight was still open when Anthropic filed to go public.
