SoftBank Group’s credit risk, as measured by its credit-default swaps, has risen to the highest level in nearly four years as concerns grow over AI-related funding and a potential large acquisition, Bloomberg reported on 20 October 2026.
SoftBank’s five-year CDS stood at 432 basis points on Tuesday, the highest since early November 2022, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. It has widened by more than 30 basis points since moving above 400 a week earlier, Bloomberg said.

A short explainer on financial conditions, how rates and market mood change the price of capital. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this story.
The key insight: As we read it, Bloomberg describes the credit market putting a higher price on SoftBank’s debt at the same time as SoftBank is reported to be weighing more AI-related outlays, while its own filings show $64.6 billion already in OpenAI.
What Bloomberg Reported
Bloomberg’s report, by Takahiko Hyuga, ties the move to two concerns: AI-related funding and a potential large acquisition. The portion of the article we could read does not name the acquisition, so we do not say which deal Bloomberg means.
A credit-default swap is a contract that pays out if a borrower defaults, and its price is quoted in basis points a year. A basis point is a hundredth of a percentage point, so 432 basis points is 4.32 percentage points.
SoftBank is not alone. CNBC reported on 19 October 2026 that the five-year credit-default swap spread of Oracle, which it called “an investment-grade hyperscaler and considered a bellwether on AI credit”, moved wider that Monday to 315 basis points, “a 311% increase from a year prior”.
The trade itself is growing. The Financial Times reported on 20 October 2026 that more than $9bn of credit-default swaps linked to bonds issued by Oracle, SpaceX, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Broadcom and Nvidia traded on average each week in September, up from less than $2bn in July, citing Morgan Stanley Research. The FT put five-year Meta CDS at 108 basis points and Nvidia at 101 basis points this month, both record highs, quoted Oracle at 322 basis points on Monday (CNBC’s figure above is 315), and put CoreWeave’s five-year CDS at about 1,090 basis points. “CDS has become a key bellwether of investor sentiment towards hyperscaler funding and the broader AI trade,” Manish Kabra, head of US equity strategy at Société Générale, told the FT.

Bloomberg posted its report on X at 02:25 UTC on 20 October. The post repeats the article’s opening: SoftBank Group’s credit risk, as measured by its credit-default swaps, has risen to the highest level in nearly four years as concerns grow over AI-related funding and a potential large acquisition. The readable part of the article does not name the acquisition, so this piece does not say which deal Bloomberg means. The 432 basis-point level is from data compiled by Bloomberg.

The OpenAI Money on SoftBank’s Books
SoftBank’s own releases set out how much it has put into OpenAI. On 27 February 2026 it agreed to make follow-on investments of $30 billion through SoftBank Vision Fund 2, in three $10 billion tranches, at a pre-money valuation of $730 billion, according to the release.
On 1 October 2026 SoftBank said it had executed the third and final tranche, completing the $30 billion. Its cumulative investment in OpenAI totals $64.6 billion, and its ownership interest is approximately 13%, the company said.
SoftBank also said it had canceled the remaining $10 billion of undrawn capacity under a $40 billion bridge facility signed on 27 March 2026, and that all borrowings under that facility have been repaid. Its stated policy is to manage loan-to-value below 25% under normal market conditions, with an upper threshold of 35% even in times of emergency.
The Deals Now in Play
SoftBank, Abu Dhabi-based MGX and other existing backers of OpenAI are in talks to join a new OpenAI round of about $30 billion, one of the people told Reuters on 19 October 2026. Reuters reported that the round could value OpenAI at over $1.4 trillion. OpenAI and SoftBank declined to comment to Reuters.
Separately, SoftBank is considering an acquisition of Allied Universal, the largest security services company in the US, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg on 16 October 2026. The potential transaction may give closely held Allied an equity value of as much as $18 billion, some of the people said, according to Bloomberg.
Bloomberg described the Allied deliberations as private. Reuters also reported that SoftBank-backed SB Energy is among the companies that have pulled or paused their listings.
The Share Price
SoftBank Group shares traded at 4,554 yen at 02:10 UTC on 20 October, against a previous close of 4,845 yen, according to Yahoo Finance data. By our arithmetic, that is a fall of about 6.0% in the session at that time.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the instrument is the signal: a five-year CDS at 432 basis points, per Bloomberg data, is the market’s quoted annual price of protection against a SoftBank default, and it is the highest since early November 2022.
As we read it, SoftBank’s own releases show the scale already committed: a $30 billion follow-on completed on 1 October, $64.6 billion in total for about 13% of OpenAI, and a $40 billion bridge facility that it says has been repaid.
As we read it, the open items are reported, not final: Reuters says SoftBank is in talks to join OpenAI’s new round of about $30 billion, and Bloomberg says SoftBank is considering a deal that could value Allied Universal’s equity at up to $18 billion.

The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map.
The framework puts it this way: “the capex race is no longer a corporate spending cycle. It is a sovereign-scale financing problem dressed in tech-company clothing”.
As we read it, SoftBank’s credit-default swaps are one place where the market prices that financing. The framework was published in May 2026 and does not address this CDS move.
What Is Not Established
Bloomberg’s readable text does not say which acquisition it means, and we do not link the CDS move to any single deal. The Allied deliberations are reported by people familiar, and SoftBank’s part in OpenAI’s new round is described by Reuters as talks, with no amount reported for SoftBank.
The CDS level is market data compiled by Bloomberg, not a SoftBank figure, and the share move is intraday.
The Bottom Line
SoftBank’s five-year CDS stood at 432 basis points on 20 October 2026, the highest since early November 2022, Bloomberg reported, as concerns grow over AI-related funding and a potential large acquisition. SoftBank says it has invested $64.6 billion in OpenAI for a stake of about 13%.
