SoftBank Group is considering an acquisition of Allied Universal, the largest security services company in the US, Bloomberg reported on 16 October 2026, citing people familiar with the matter. The potential transaction may give the closely held company an equity value of as much as $18 billion, some of those people said.
Allied also has about $12 billion of publicly traded debt across loans and bonds, according to data compiled by Bloomberg, which “could bring a total deal value close to $30 billion.” Bloomberg says the people described the deliberations as preliminary, and that “no final decisions have been made, including on the potential price.”
Business Pill · SYNERGIES
A one-minute explainer of deal synergies: the savings a buyer controls and the sales it hopes for. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this story.
The key insight: As we read it, Bloomberg describes SoftBank weighing a buyer’s seat at the point where robots would be used, not only at the point where they are built: the people it cites say Son sees security services as a proving ground for his portfolio companies’ robotics, while another person says the technology “isn’t there yet.”
What Bloomberg Reported
Bloomberg says founder Masayoshi Son is exploring ways to deploy AI-powered robots across industries, and that he has identified security services as “a promising proving ground for robotics technologies developed by his portfolio companies,” according to some of the people.
With Allied, SoftBank would look to eventually replace some staff with robots to handle security work, one of the people told Bloomberg. Another person said the technology “isn’t there yet,” and that humanoid-like security workers will likely take more time.
Representatives for SoftBank, Warburg Pincus and La Caisse declined to comment, Bloomberg says, and an Allied spokesperson did not respond to its requests for comment.

Techmeme’s post at 19:50 UTC on 16 October relayed Bloomberg’s report that SoftBank is weighing a purchase of Allied Universal at an equity valuation of about $18 billion, as Masayoshi Son explores deploying AI-powered robots.
The Deal Terms on the Table
Allied’s backers include private equity firm Warburg Pincus and Canadian pension fund La Caisse, formerly known as CDPQ, according to Bloomberg. The business was valued at more than $7 billion in 2019, when La Caisse invested in the company, Bloomberg says.
The possible equity value of as much as $18 billion and the roughly $12 billion of traded debt add up to the “close to $30 billion” total deal value Bloomberg gives. No price has been agreed, the people said.
Bloomberg reports that SoftBank’s American depositary receipts fell as much as 9.9% to $14.72 in New York on Friday after the news.
What Allied Does
Allied offers security staffing for businesses and events, Bloomberg says, and it has a large footprint in providing security for data center developments. It handles security for the New York City subway through contracts with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
Bloomberg says Allied has been exploring its own robot initiatives, including a five-foot-tall, 300-pound autonomous machine for patrols and monitoring. On its website, Allied says “machines excel at monotonous, computationally heavy, and sometimes hazardous or difficult-to-reach work,” according to Bloomberg.
SoftBank’s Robotics Deals
Bloomberg lists SoftBank’s latest deals as the acquisition of ABB’s industrial robots unit for $5.4 billion and a $200 million investment in Gravis Robotics, a Swiss startup making autonomous software for construction machinery. It also cites a $3 billion purchase of DigitalBridge to power Son’s data center push.
Last year Son set up a holding company, Robo HD, combining SoftBank’s robotics assets, and about 20 investments including Berkshire Grey, Agile Robots and Skild AI were transferred to it, Bloomberg says. SoftBank has also set up Roze, an AI and robotics vehicle it hopes to take public in the US, Bloomberg has reported.
Bloomberg says Son has been ramping up investments in robotics as part of his bet on the AI boom, and calls a $65 billion commitment with OpenAI the centerpiece of that effort. Earlier we wrote about SoftBank completing its $30B OpenAI follow-on and about an Anthropic study on robots paying off for 0.3% of job tasks.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the price tag is mostly an existing services business: Bloomberg says the equity value could be as much as $18 billion and the traded debt about $12 billion, against a valuation of more than $7 billion in 2019.
As we read it, the stated plan is gradual: one person told Bloomberg SoftBank would look to eventually replace some staff with robots, and another said humanoid-like security workers will likely take more time.
As we read it, Allied would sit next to deals Bloomberg lists from the same strategy: ABB’s industrial robots unit for $5.4 billion, Gravis Robotics, the Robo HD holding company and DigitalBridge.

Three Implications
ALLIED’S OWNERS Bloomberg says Warburg Pincus and La Caisse back Allied, which was valued at more than $7 billion in 2019; the possible equity value now cited is as much as $18 billion.
ALLIED’S LENDERS Bloomberg counts about $12 billion of publicly traded loans and bonds, which it says could bring a total deal value close to $30 billion.
SOFTBANK SHAREHOLDERS Bloomberg reports SoftBank’s American depositary receipts fell as much as 9.9% to $14.72 in New York on Friday after the news.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Nine Layers of AI.
The framework says: “That is why the AI economy is not a list of companies racing each other. It is a layered industrial stack — and at any given moment, the binding constraint sits at a different layer than it did six months ago.”
As we read it, Bloomberg’s account places SoftBank across several layers of that stack at once, from its OpenAI commitment and DigitalBridge data centers to ABB’s robots unit, with Allied as a possible place to put robots to work. The framework predates the report and does not discuss SoftBank or Allied.

What Is Not Established
