SK Hynix Weighs a $12B Dividend From Its Kioxia Gains

SK Hynix is considering a special dividend of about 16 trillion won ($12 billion), funded by gains from selling its stake in Japanese memory chip maker Kioxia, the South Korean newspaper Dong-A Ilbo reported on 26 October 2026, according to Reuters. Bloomberg ran the report under the headline “SK Hynix Plans $12 Billion Dividend From Kioxia Gains: Report.”

The newspaper said the company could unveil the plan alongside its third-quarter earnings on Wednesday, 28 October. SK Hynix could not be reached for comment outside normal business hours, Reuters reported, and TokenPost reported that SK Hynix has not confirmed the payout.

Business Pill · FREE CASH FLOW

A short explainer on free cash flow: why profit on paper and cash in the bank can differ. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about SK Hynix or this dividend.

The key insight: As we read it, the SK Hynix report is a capital-return story funded by an investment exit: Dong-A Ilbo reported the payout would come from about 80% of an estimated 20 trillion won gain on the Kioxia stake, not from memory-chip operations, and SK Hynix has not confirmed it.

What the Reports Say

Dong-A Ilbo reported that SK Hynix is moving forward with a plan to return approximately 80% of the proceeds from the sale of its Kioxia stake to shareholders as a special dividend, according to a TechFlow summary of the report. The newspaper put SK Hynix’s estimated investment gain from the Kioxia sale at around 20 trillion won.

At about 16 trillion won, the special dividend would be more than seven times SK Hynix’s total dividend payout of 2.1 trillion won for the whole of last year, according to the same summary. Based on the current number of outstanding shares, it works out to about 23,000 won per share, and the company is also evaluating whether to pay it in installments.

Milk Road AI said on 26 October that DRAM contract prices rose about 80% in Q2 and about 40% in Q3, and are expected to rise about 20% in Q4, with long-term contract price caps and weaker consumer demand cooling the pace while AI inference demand keeps growing and new mature DRAM supply is limited. The post notes Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix report into this backdrop. Those are the poster’s figures, not company data.

Where the Kioxia Gain Comes From

SK Hynix joined a Bain Capital-led consortium in 2018 to acquire Toshiba’s NAND business, which took the Kioxia name in 2019, TokenPost reported. SK Hynix partially sold its stake in both the first and second quarters this year, generating the gains tied to the proposed dividend, according to TokenPost.

On its second-quarter earnings call, the company said it was reviewing additional ways to return capital to shareholders and planned to share details by year-end, TokenPost reported.

How the Market Read It

SK Hynix’s stock rose by up to 3% for a second consecutive trading day on the report, GuruFocus reported, which put the dividend at a yield of approximately 1.8% at current prices. Fund manager Kim Namho of Timefolio Asset Management said the news provides short-term support for the stock but may not lead to sustained increases, according to GuruFocus, which also reported that Samsung Electronics fell by up to 1.9% and the Kospi by 0.6%.

GuruFocus also reported that concerns over Solidigm’s dual listing, which had pressured SK Hynix’s shares, appear to have eased. SK Hynix halted Solidigm’s potential US IPO and pre-IPO round on 23 October, citing capital market conditions, as our Solidigm piece reported.

Capital Back, Capital Raised

The SK Hynix report lands in a week of AI financing stories running the other way. Meta’s 21 October information statement puts the most stock Meta could sell without Mark Zuckerberg’s vote falling below 50% at about $700 billion, an adviser’s estimate, as our Meta filing piece reported. Elon Musk wrote on 25 October that “SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs,” as our SpaceX piece reported.

SK Hynix’s reported payout comes from selling an investment, not from raising money, according to the reports.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the scale is the point: about 16 trillion won is more than seven times the 2.1 trillion won SK Hynix paid in total dividends last year, according to the TechFlow summary of Dong-A Ilbo.

As we read it, the timing ties the report to the third-quarter results on 28 October, the date the newspaper said the plan could be unveiled; until then the figures are reported, not announced.

As we read it, the same week shows two money flows in AI: SK Hynix’s reported payout comes from selling an investment, while Musk wrote that SpaceX closed $40 billion of debt for GPUs.

Three Implications

FOR SK HYNIX SHAREHOLDERS The payout would be about 23,000 won per share, according to the TechFlow summary, and whether it is paid in installments is under review.

FOR THE 28 OCTOBER RESULTS TokenPost reported that SK Hynix said on its second-quarter call it was reviewing additional ways to return capital and planned to share details by year-end.

FOR THE MEMORY PEERS GuruFocus reported that Samsung Electronics fell by up to 1.9% on the day SK Hynix rose by up to 3%.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Memory Chokepoint.

The analysis puts it this way: “Memory is becoming the new compute.”

As we read it, the SK Hynix report adds the shareholder side of that shift: the reported payout comes from the Kioxia stake, a memory-chip investment. The analysis was published in December 2025 and does not discuss this dividend.

Update, 26 Oct: US leveraged SK Hynix funds to be delisted. Tradr, the leveraged and inverse ETF brand of AXS Investments, will close its Tradr 2X Long SK hynix Daily ETF (SKHA) and Tradr 2X Short SK hynix Daily ETF (SKHN), according to Seoul Economic Daily, citing an SEC filing. The two funds began trading on 28 July and track twice the daily long or inverse return of SK Hynix’s Nasdaq-listed ADRs. The board approved the liquidation on 20 October. The last trading day is 5 November on Cboe’s BZX Exchange, and liquidation is expected around 12 November. Combined net assets were about $1.3 million, per ETF CHECK data cited by the paper.

Tradr’s Matt Markiewicz cited “the extremely fierce competition among related ETFs” and said he does not see a problem with SK Hynix as the underlying asset, the paper reported. Tradr is liquidating seven ETFs this month. Bloomberg’s headline tied the closures to a cooling AI rally; for that backdrop, see our read on the AI-doubts selloff.

What Is Not Established

The plan rests on Dong-A Ilbo’s report, and SK Hynix has not confirmed the dividend, its size, the per-share figure or the timing in anything we read, and we did not read Bloomberg’s article beyond its headline. Whether the payout would come in installments is under review, according to the reports. We did not contact SK Hynix.
