OpenAI CFO: 300M Use ChatGPT for Health, 200M for Finance

OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar gave figures for two everyday uses of ChatGPT on CNBC on 6 November: “1.2 billion people across the globe come to us every single week to get things done. 300 million for health and wellness, 200 million people for personal finance”.

She did not say over what period the 300 million and 200 million are counted. By our arithmetic, they equal 25% and about 17% of the 1.2 billion weekly figure.

Business Pill · AI Agents Explained

A short explainer on AI agents, systems that move from answering to doing. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss this story.

The key insight: OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told CNBC that 300 million people use ChatGPT for health and wellness and 200 million for personal finance, 25% and about 17% of its 1.2 billion weekly users by our arithmetic; she gave no period for the two counts.

What Friar Said

The figures came in an answer about demand for AI after the US midterm elections. In the same clip Friar said “We saw a breakout Q3. Our business grew 70% quarter over quarter. Our enterprise business doubled”, which we covered with her comments on OpenAI’s fundraising (our piece).

The quotations come from our machine transcript of a clip of the CNBC interview posted on X (clip), not from an official transcript. Friar did not give a breakdown behind the 300 million and 200 million figures in the clip.

How the Figures Compare

The 1.2 billion weekly figure is not new. OpenAI’s Adam Fry said on 2 November, at an OpenAI-hosted dinner in New York, that ChatGPT went from 1 billion to 1.2 billion weekly users in two months (our piece).

On health, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Health page says “over 230 million people globally ask health and wellness related questions on ChatGPT every week”, based on what it calls a de-identified analysis of conversations (OpenAI). The page carries an update dated 23 July 2026. If Friar’s 300 million is also a weekly count, it is about 30% above that figure, by our arithmetic; she did not say.

On personal finance, OpenAI previewed a personal finance experience in ChatGPT on 15 May, and Anthropic launched Personal Finance in Claude on 5 November. Our comparison of the two companies’ published terms found they match on two of seven and differ on five (our piece).

Our Numbers

By our arithmetic, 300 million is 25% of 1.2 billion and 200 million is about 16.7%. If the health figure is weekly, the change from the 230 million on OpenAI’s Health page is about 70 million, or 30%. These ratios assume the counts share a base, which Friar did not confirm.

Connecting the Coverage

Friar spoke as OpenAI was reported to have closed about $11 billion of a new round at a $1.25 trillion valuation (our piece). Elsewhere in consumer AI, Meta said this week that many of its Muse users had not used AI before (our piece).

The Structural Read

As we read the clip, Friar used the two figures to describe what people do with ChatGPT, not to report revenue from those uses.

As we read OpenAI’s Health page, health was already one of the largest uses OpenAI reported, at over 230 million people a week.

As we read the figures together, finance is the smaller of the two named uses, and it is the area where Anthropic launched a product in Claude on 5 November.

“300 million for health and wellness, 200 million people for personal finance.”

Three Implications

FOR HEALTH PRODUCTS OpenAI’s Health page reports over 230 million people asking health and wellness questions on ChatGPT every week.

FOR PERSONAL FINANCE Friar’s 200 million figure is the first count she gave for finance use in the clip; she did not say over what period.

FOR READING THE NUMBERS The 25% and about 17% shares assume the counts share the weekly base, which Friar did not confirm.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Product Overhang Doctrine.

The analysis says: “The second curve is product capability — what users of your specific product can actually do, end-to-end, in production.”

As we read it, Friar’s health and finance counts describe that second curve for ChatGPT: what people use the product for. The analysis does not discuss these figures.

What Is Not Established

In the clip, Friar did not say whether the 300 million and 200 million are weekly, monthly or cumulative, whether the groups overlap, or how a conversation is classed as health or personal finance. The comparison with the 230 million figure assumes the same counting method.

The Bottom Line

OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told CNBC that 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week, with “300 million for health and wellness, 200 million people for personal finance”. By our arithmetic those are 25% and about 17% of the weekly base; she did not give a period for them.
