OpenAI Said to Close ~$11B at $1.25T, Round May Reach $20B

OpenAI has closed on new funding of roughly $11 billion, the initial part of a round that values the company at $1.25 trillion, Bloomberg reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. The funding was wired to the company as of Friday, the people said, and the remainder of the round, which could increase to as much as $20 billion in total, is expected to be completed in the coming weeks, one person said.

Roughly $11 billion is about 37% of the $30 billion OpenAI had initially targeted, according to the Wall Street Journal’s 31 October report, and about 55% of the $20 billion the round could reach, by our arithmetic.

The key insight: As we read Bloomberg’s report, OpenAI has turned talks into cash: roughly $11 billion closed at a $1.25 trillion valuation, about 37% of the $30 billion the Wall Street Journal said it first targeted and about 47% above March’s $852 billion valuation, by our arithmetic.

What Bloomberg Reported

Bloomberg’s story, by Natasha Mascarenhas and Rebecca Torrence, was published at 20:58 UTC under the headline “OpenAI Completes $11 Billion Portion of Funding at $1.25 Trillion Value”. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because the information is not public, Bloomberg wrote. In the part of the story we could read, Bloomberg did not name the investors in the $11 billion or say whether the $1.25 trillion figure is before or after the new money.

Earlier on Friday, OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar told CNBC the company was in talks to raise at a $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation and called the round ongoing, as we reported in OpenAI CFO Puts Raise Talks at $1.25T, 47% Above March. Bloomberg reported on 6 November, citing people familiar, that OpenAI has closed roughly $11 billion of a round that could reach $20 billion. The Wall Street Journal reported on 31 October that OpenAI had initially targeted $30 billion. About 37% of that target, by our arithmetic.

What Was Posted on X

The X account Negligible Capital opened with a headline-style line on OpenAI closing $11 billion at a $1.25 trillion value, posted at 21:04 UTC, and set out the round’s path as it read it: more than $30 billion sought at $1.4 trillion, then $20 billion at $1.25 trillion, then $11 billion raised with the remaining $9 billion expected in the coming weeks. Its last line, that investors may want to see how Anthropic’s IPO goes before committing the next $9 billion, is the poster’s own opinion; Bloomberg did not report it. Bloomberg’s article, cited above, says the remainder of the round is expected in the coming weeks, citing one person.

How the Round Got Here

OpenAI said on 31 March that it had closed its previous round with $122 billion in committed capital at a post-money valuation of $852 billion. A $1.25 trillion valuation is about 47% above that mark, by our arithmetic.

The Wall Street Journal reported on 31 October that OpenAI had raised less than half of the $30 billion it had initially targeted, which we covered in OpenAI Raised Under Half Its $30B Goal, at a $1.25T Value. SoftBank is in discussions to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in the round, according to relays on X of a New York Times DealBook report: SoftBank Said to Weigh Adding Under $1B to $64.6B OpenAI Bet.

Two Labs, One Evening

The report landed on the same day prospective investors in Anthropic’s planned IPO were reported to be discussing a valuation of $1.2 trillion to $1.3 trillion, according to a Bloomberg headline relayed on X: Investors Discuss $1.2T-$1.3T Anthropic IPO Value After Rout. One is a private funding round and the other is talk about a public listing, so the figures are not like-for-like. Later on Friday, prediction-market odds of a November Anthropic listing rose, as we report in Anthropic November IPO Odds Jump to 76% After FT Report.

The Structural Read

As we read Bloomberg, the money was wired as of Friday, the same day OpenAI’s CFO told CNBC the round was ongoing.

As we read the earlier reports, the price held at $1.25 trillion while the amount raised so far is roughly $11 billion, against the $30 billion the Wall Street Journal said OpenAI first targeted.

As we read the same-day reports, OpenAI’s private price and the Anthropic IPO talk reported by Bloomberg sit in the same $1.2 trillion to $1.3 trillion range, though one is a private round and the other a listing value.

Three Implications

FOR OPENAI Bloomberg reported roughly $11 billion was wired as of Friday, with the rest of a round of up to $20 billion expected in the coming weeks, one person said.

FOR INVESTORS SoftBank is in discussions to invest hundreds of millions in the round, according to relays of a New York Times DealBook report.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Supercycle.

The analysis says: “Conflating these clocks produces the most common analytical errors of the moment.”

As we read it, a private round priced in talks and IPO valuation talk after a market rout run on different clocks. The analysis does not discuss OpenAI’s round or these figures.

Update, 6 Nov, 22:08 UTC: from $1.4 trillion to $1.25 trillion. Bloomberg’s article adds that OpenAI “initially set out to raise $30 billion or more at a $1.4 trillion valuation, Bloomberg News has reported, before scaling back its plans amid a public market rout for the AI sector.” OpenAI declined to comment, Bloomberg wrote.

By our arithmetic, $1.25 trillion is about 10.7% below that $1.4 trillion starting point. The roughly $11 billion closed is about 55% of the up to $20 billion the round could reach and about 37% of the $30 billion first sought, which would leave up to about $9 billion to come if the round reaches $20 billion. Bloomberg reported that the remainder is expected in the coming weeks, citing one person.

On X, the account Negligible Capital laid out the same path at 21:04 UTC and added a view of its own: that investors may want to see how Anthropic’s IPO goes before committing the next $9 billion. That is the poster’s opinion, not something Bloomberg reported. The post is embedded in the “What Was Posted on X” section above.

A note on sourcing. The closing of roughly $11 billion and the possible $20 billion total are as reported by Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter; we read the opening of its story, not the full article. The March round figures are OpenAI’s own; the $30 billion initial target is as the Wall Street Journal reported. The 37%, 55% and 47% are our arithmetic. We did not contact OpenAI.
