SoftBank Said to Weigh Adding Under $1B to $64.6B OpenAI Bet

SoftBank is in talks to invest several hundred million dollars in OpenAI’s latest funding round, The New York Times reported on 6 November, according to relays of the DealBook report on X and by Crypto Briefing. The report describes talks, not a signed deal, Crypto Briefing said, and no final amount, valuation or closing date has been confirmed.

Even $1 billion, more than the several hundred million reported, would be 1.5% of the $64.6 billion SoftBank says it has invested in OpenAI so far, by our arithmetic. Every $100 million is 0.15% of that total.

Business Pill · Financial Conditions

A short explainer on financial conditions: how the price of capital moves with markets. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss SoftBank or OpenAI.

The key insight: As we read the relays and SoftBank’s own figures, the talks the New York Times reported are small next to what SoftBank already holds: even $1 billion would be 1.5% of the $64.6 billion SoftBank says it has invested in OpenAI, by our arithmetic.

What Was Reported

Walter Bloomberg’s account on X posted at 13:23 UTC: “Softbank in discussions to invest hundreds of millions in OpenAI’s latest funding round – NYT DealBook”. Another X relay at 13:10 UTC said the Times “reports SoftBank is in talks to invest several hundred million dollars in OpenAI”.

We could not read the Times item itself. Crypto Briefing, citing the Times, wrote: “The Times report describes talks, not a signed deal. No final amount, valuation, or closing date has been confirmed.” Neither SoftBank nor OpenAI had commented in the material we read.

SoftBank Group’s cumulative investment in OpenAI, in billions of dollars, from SoftBank’s release
SoftBank Group’s cumulative investment in OpenAI, in billions of dollars, from SoftBank’s release of 1 October 2026 ($30.0 billion of 2026 follow-on investment, $64.6 billion cumulative; the earlier amount is our arithmetic), against a $1 billion ceiling for the several hundred million dollars the New York Times reported SoftBank is discussing, according to relays.

What SoftBank Already Holds

SoftBank’s own release of 1 October says it executed the third and final $10.0 billion tranche of its follow-on investment through SoftBank Vision Fund 2, completing $30.0 billion of follow-on investments. “As a result, SBGโ€™s cumulative investment in OpenAI totals USD 64.6 billion, and its ownership interest is approximately 13%”, the release says.

The release says the third tranche “was funded with the proceeds from the issuance of foreign currency-denominated senior notes”, and that SoftBank canceled the remaining $10.0 billion of undrawn capacity under its bridge facility from 30 September.

The Round It Would Join

The Financial Times reported on 31 October that OpenAI “is now seeking about $20bn at a $1.25tn valuation as it tempers its ambitions”, as we reported. On 22 October CNBC had reported a raise of “up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation”.

Against an about $20 billion round, $1 billion would be 5% and every $100 million 0.5%, by our arithmetic. Neither the relays nor Crypto Briefing say whether SoftBank’s money would come from Vision Fund 2 or how it would be financed.

The Week Around It

The report came on the day SoftBank Group shares closed at 3,549 yen in Tokyo, down 10.83%, and 58.9% below their 2 June close, and its dollar notes fell, as we reported in SoftBank Bond Falls Most in 10 Weeks as AI Rout Hits Credit. That piece also carries Elon Musk’s unevidenced claim on X that SoftBank is “defaulting on their turbine orders”, to which SoftBank had not responded publicly.

Update, 6 Nov, 14:40 UTC: what the Journal reported OpenAI had actually raised. The Wall Street Journal reported on October 30 that OpenAI had secured roughly $11 billion in commitments for its latest round, less than half of the $30 billion it had initially targeted, according to people familiar with the matter. The Journal said the deal values OpenAI at $1.25 trillion, less than the $1.4 trillion valuation it had earlier hoped to achieve, and that tepid interest from some large investors and market jitters over the AI trade had dampened appetite. We covered that report here.

The Journal’s CIO Journal newsletter repeated on Friday morning that OpenAI had raised less than half of its target, noting in its coverage of Anthropic’s IPO that some interest had been cooling even before Thursday’s selloff and citing OpenAI’s round as the example.

By our arithmetic, $11 billion is about 37% of the $30 billion target and the $1.25 trillion valuation is about 11% below $1.4 trillion. Relays of a New York Times DealBook report say SoftBank is in discussions to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in the round; no amount, valuation or close has been confirmed, and it is not clear whether any such investment would be part of the roughly $11 billion the Journal reported.

Update, 6 Nov: CNBC updated its report to say OpenAI is in talks to raise at a $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation, Friar said, about 47% above the $852 billion post-money of OpenAI’s March round, by our arithmetic. Details: OpenAI CFO Puts Raise Talks at $1.25T, 47% Above March.

Update, 6 Nov: Bloomberg reported later on Friday, citing people familiar, that OpenAI has closed roughly $11 billion, the initial part of a round at a $1.25 trillion valuation that could reach $20 billion. Details: OpenAI Said to Close ~$11B at $1.25T, Round May Reach $20B.

The Structural Read

As we read SoftBank’s 1 October release, the reported talks would follow a $30.0 billion follow-on that SoftBank funded with foreign currency-denominated senior notes, after it canceled the remaining $10.0 billion of undrawn bridge capacity.

As we read the round reporting, a cheque of several hundred million dollars would be a small share of the about $20 billion the Financial Times said OpenAI is now seeking: $1 billion would be 5%, by our arithmetic.

As we read the timing, the report came on the day SoftBank Group shares closed down 10.83% in Tokyo, 58.9% below their 2 June close, as we reported; the relays do not link the two.

Three Implications

FOR SOFTBANK SoftBank says its cumulative OpenAI investment is $64.6 billion, for about 13%; the reported talks are for several hundred million dollars more, according to the relays.

FOR OPENAI’S ROUND The FT reported on 31 October that OpenAI is seeking about $20 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation.

The analysis says: “The job of any operator, investor, or builder is to know which layer they are operating inside and which layer the binding constraint is rotating toward next.”

As we read it, SoftBank’s position is concentrated in one model-layer company: its own release puts its OpenAI investment at $64.6 billion. The analysis does not discuss SoftBank or OpenAI.

The Bottom Line

SoftBank is in talks to put several hundred million dollars into OpenAI’s latest round, the New York Times reported, according to relays. On top of the $64.6 billion SoftBank says it has already invested, even $1 billion would add 1.5%, by our arithmetic.
