California startups raised $385 billion in seed- through growth-stage rounds in 2026 so far, more than all US startups raised in any prior year on record, Crunchbase News reported on 26 October, citing Crunchbase data. Financings for San Francisco-based OpenAI and Anthropic account for more than half of the California total, according to the report.
California’s haul is more than double its 2025 total of $184 billion and equal to 75.9% of the $507 billion raised by US startups in 2026 to date, per Crunchbase’s charts. By our arithmetic, startups outside California raised about $122 billion this year, up about 12% from roughly $109 billion in 2025.
Business Pill · CONCENTRATION
A short Business Engineer explainer on concentration: when a few big pieces make the total. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about Crunchbase’s data or the figures in this piece.
The key insight: As we read it, the record is a concentration story: Crunchbase reports California’s $385 billion is more than half OpenAI and Anthropic, and by our arithmetic US startups outside California raised about $122 billion in 2026 to date, up about 12% from roughly $109 billion in 2025.
Where the Money Went
Crunchbase said the OpenAI and Anthropic rounds make up more than half of the $385 billion, but that California companies would still hold a disproportionate share of the largest US rounds without them. Its list of the next-largest California rounds in 2026 is led by SpaceXAI at $20 billion, Waymo at $16 billion and Prometheus at $12 billion.
Databricks, Anduril Industries and Safe Superintelligence each raised $5 billion, according to the Crunchbase list, followed by StepFun at $2.5 billion, Cognition and Shield AI at $2 billion each, and Atoms at $1.7 billion. Crunchbase noted that xAI raised $20 billion as a California-headquartered company earlier this year but is now part of SpaceX, which is headquartered in Texas.

California’s Share Has Risen for Three Years
California companies took 43.0% of US startup funding in 2017 and 46.0% in the 2021 boom, when US startups raised $359 billion, the highest annual total before this year in Crunchbase’s series. The share rose to 48.7% in 2023, 56.6% in 2024 and 62.8% in 2025, before reaching 75.9% in 2026 to date, which Crunchbase called an apparent record.
Crunchbase attributed much of the rise to San Francisco AI unicorns, but said it also sees strength in the broader Silicon Valley region and in Southern California.
Early-Stage Money Is Up Too
California companies raised nearly $62 billion in seed- and early-stage rounds in 2026 so far, roughly 57% of all US funding at those stages, according to Crunchbase. Its chart puts the 2026 figure at $61.9 billion, against $48.6 billion in 2025 and $55.2 billion in 2021, and Crunchbase said it appears to be a record.
Connecting the Coverage
Our piece on the Q3 venture count reported on 5 October that Crunchbase put global venture funding at $159 billion in the third quarter of 2026, with a record 27 companies raising rounds of $1 billion or more. Two of the rounds on its California list were covered here when they happened: the $5 billion Nvidia investment in Safe Superintelligence in July and the $12 billion Prometheus raise in June.
On the spending side, our piece on the Ramp AI spending data reported on 23 October that 1% of Ramp firms drive 80% of spend on OpenAI and Anthropic.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the share line matters more than the dollar line: California’s cut of US startup funding moved between 40.7% and 53.3% from 2017 to 2023 in Crunchbase’s series, then rose to 56.6%, 62.8% and 75.9% in three straight years.
As we read it, the next tier is concentrated too: on Crunchbase’s list of the largest California rounds outside OpenAI and Anthropic, the top three (SpaceXAI, Waymo and Prometheus) total $48 billion by our arithmetic, out of $71.2 billion for the ten listed.
As we read it, early-stage money did not stall behind the megarounds: Crunchbase reports California seed and early-stage funding at $61.9 billion in 2026 to date, above the $55.2 billion of 2021.

Three Implications
FOR FOUNDERS OUTSIDE CALIFORNIA By our arithmetic from Crunchbase’s totals, startups outside California raised about $122 billion in 2026 to date, about 12% more than in 2025, while California’s total more than doubled.
FOR INVESTORS Crunchbase reports that OpenAI and Anthropic account for more than half of California’s $385 billion, so the state total moves with a small number of very large rounds.
FOR THE RECORD BOOKS Crunchbase’s US total for 2021, the highest year before 2026 in its series, was $359 billion; California startups alone have raised $385 billion in 2026 to late October.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map & The State of AI Hyperscalers.
The framework argues that the AI build-out is “underwritten by a $1T concentrated demand commitment from two counterparties”, OpenAI and Anthropic.
As we read it, Crunchbase’s data shows the same two names on the funding side: their rounds make up more than half of California’s record $385 billion. The framework was published in May 2026 and does not discuss these figures.
What Is Not Established
Crunchbase does not give the exact amount raised by OpenAI and Anthropic within the $385 billion, only that it is more than half. The rest-of-US figures and the 12% growth rate are our arithmetic from Crunchbase’s US and California totals, and both totals count rounds only up to late October, so the full-year comparison may change. Crunchbase’s footnote says xAI raised its $20 billion as a California-headquartered company, before becoming part of Texas-based SpaceX.
The Bottom Line
California startups have raised $385 billion in 2026, more than the whole US raised in any earlier year in Crunchbase’s data, and OpenAI and Anthropic account for more than half of it. By our arithmetic, US funding outside California grew about 12% this year, while California’s more than doubled.
