Crunchbase: Q3 Venture Hit $159B, AI Took 64%

Every figure here is Crunchbase’s own statement in its Q3 2026 report, with data as of 2 October 2026. This publication read the report text only and verified none of it independently.

Crunchbase says global venture funding totaled $159 billion in the third quarter of 2026, across close to 6,000 funded startups. That was down 25% from the second quarter and up 53% from a year earlier. A record 27 companies raised rounds of $1 billion or more, and AI-driven startups raised $102 billion, or 64% of the total. The figures are Crunchbase’s, with data as of 2 October 2026. This publication read Crunchbase News’s report and verified none of it independently.

What Crunchbase Reported

Crunchbase says the third quarter was the lowest for startup investment so far this year, but still exceeded every other quarter since the second quarter of 2022. It says funding to private companies totaled $679 billion globally in the first three quarters of 2026, the highest amount for the first three quarters of any year.

Crunchbase says global venture funding in the third quarter was down 25% from the $212 billion raised in the second quarter and up 53% from the $104 billion raised in the third quarter of 2025.

Business Pill · WHO MADE THE TOTAL?

A one-minute explainer of the idea behind this story: concentration. It teaches the concept, not this story’s figures.

The key insight: Crunchbase’s own numbers put around a third of the quarter’s capital in the 27 companies that raised $1 billion or more. The total fell 25% from the second quarter, yet still exceeded every other quarter since the second quarter of 2022.

Billion-Dollar Rounds

Crunchbase says an all-time record of 27 companies raised rounds of $1 billion or more in the third quarter, up from the previous record of 16 in the second quarter and 14 in the first. It says around a third of all global venture capital raised in the third quarter went to those 27 companies.

Crunchbase says no single company raised funding in the tens of billions, and that eight companies raised rounds of $3 billion or more, with frontier labs and data centers leading by company counts. It says five of the eight were founded within the past four years.

The largest deals, it says, went to Databricks and Safe Superintelligence, which each raised $5 billion. Crusoe, Moonshot AI, Mistral AI, Nscale, The Boring Co. and Kling AI each raised more than $3 billion.

AI, the United States and Sectors

Crunchbase says AI-driven startups across the stack raised $102 billion, or 64% of global venture capital. It says that share was down from the two previous quarters but 14 percentage points above the third quarter of 2025.

It says U.S.-based companies raised $91 billion, around 57% of the global total, and that the San Francisco Bay Area alone accounted for 24% of global venture investment. It says the aerospace, robotics, data center, semiconductor and energy sectors each raised $10 billion or more in the quarter.

By Stage

Crunchbase says late-stage funding totaled $105 billion, down 23% from the second quarter and up 73% from the third quarter of 2025, and that rounds of $100 million and above accounted for close to 90% of late-stage financings.

It says early-stage funding totaled $40.6 billion, up 25% from a year earlier, with rounds of $100 million and over representing 50% of early-stage financings. Seed funding totaled $13 billion, of which $2.6 billion went to seed rounds of $100 million and over, around 20% of seed financings.

Exits

Crunchbase says the third quarter was a fairly strong one for exits, with China dominating the largest IPOs. It lists ChangXin Memory Technologies, a DRAM chip developer, as the largest IPO, raising $8.6 billion at an $85.5 billion value, with its stock surging more than 500% on its debut. It lists Shein second, listing at a $26.3 billion valuation.

It also lists Enflame, a Shanghai-based AI chipmaker, raising $912 million at a $25.5 billion valuation; Bending Spoons, raising $1.6 billion at an $18.4 billion value; and Unitree Robotics, raising $905 million at a $9 billion valuation.

On M&A, Crunchbase says U.S.-based companies dominated the largest deals and semiconductor companies were the largest acquirers. It lists Nvidia’s bid to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, AMD’s announced intent to acquire World Labs for $8.2 billion, and Stripe’s acquisition of OpenRouter for $7.5 billion.

How the Data Was Compiled

Crunchbase says the data comes directly from Crunchbase and is based on reported data, as of 2 October 2026. It notes that data lags are most pronounced at the earliest stages, with seed funding amounts increasing significantly after the end of a quarter or year. It says foreign currencies are converted to U.S. dollars at the spot rate on the date an event was reported.

The Structural Read

Three comparisons sit in the report and are easy to blur. The quarter is down 25% from the second quarter, up 53% from the third quarter of 2025, and above every other quarter since the second quarter of 2022. Crunchbase gives all three, and each uses a different baseline.

The billion-dollar count and the dollar share are separate facts. Crunchbase says 27 companies raised $1 billion or more, a record, and that around a third of third-quarter capital went to them. It also says no single company raised funding in the tens of billions, and that eight companies raised rounds of $3 billion or more.

The AI figure is a share, not a trend line. Crunchbase says AI-driven startups across the stack raised $102 billion, 64% of the total, down from the two previous quarters but 14 percentage points above the third quarter of 2025. The report does not define “AI-driven” beyond the phrase “across the stack.”

Crunchbase News — Q3 2026 global funding report, 5 October 2026

“While global venture funding in Q3 was down 25% quarter over quarter from the $212 billion raised in Q2, it was up 53% year over year from the $104 billion raised in Q3 2025.”

Three Implications

CAPITAL IN LARGER ROUNDS Crunchbase says a record 27 companies raised $1 billion or more, up from 16 in the second quarter and 14 in the first, and that around a third of third-quarter capital went to them. It says rounds of $100 million and above accounted for close to 90% of late-stage financings, and that companies raising rounds of $100 million and over represented 50% of early-stage financings.

EXITS ARE A SEPARATE LEDGER Crunchbase lists China-based ChangXin Memory Technologies as the largest IPO, raising $8.6 billion at an $85.5 billion value. Among the M&A deals it names are Nvidia’s $12.9 billion bid for Hugging Face, AMD’s $8.2 billion intent to acquire World Labs and Stripe’s $7.5 billion acquisition of OpenRouter. It says semiconductor companies were the largest acquirers.

WHAT REMAINS UNKNOWN The report gives no definition of “AI-driven” beyond “across the stack,” and this publication did not read the underlying dataset. Crunchbase says its data is as of 2 October and based on reported figures, and that seed amounts rise after a quarter ends.

What Is Not Established

The article does not define what it counts as an AI-driven startup beyond the phrase “across the stack,” and this publication did not read the underlying dataset. Crunchbase’s methodology note says the figures are based on reported data and that data lags are most pronounced at the earliest stages, with seed funding amounts increasing significantly after the end of a quarter or year.
