Nvidia in Talks to Back Nscale Debt for 460MW Anthropic Site

Nvidia is in talks to provide Nscale with billions of dollars in credit guarantees for debt to develop a 460-megawatt data center that Anthropic plans to use, The Information reported on 29 October 2026, according to headlines relayed by Walter Bloomberg and Techmeme. The article is paywalled; we read only those headlines.

Nscale’s S-1 lists Anthropic agreements of up to about $44.6 billion. By our arithmetic, that is about 43% of the $103.4 billion contract book the filing discloses.

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on tranches. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Nscale, Nvidia or any company in this piece.

The key insight: By our arithmetic, Anthropic’s agreements of up to $44.6 billion are about 43% of Nscale’s $103.4 billion contract book, and The Information reports Nvidia is in talks to guarantee billions of dollars of Nscale debt for a 460-megawatt site Anthropic plans to use.

Update (30 Oct): what the credit support would cover. Reuters, reporting The Information’s story on 29 October, said Nvidia is in talks to offer Nscale billions of dollars in credit guarantees to support debt funding for a data center earmarked for Anthropic, and that the credit support would help fund power infrastructure and construction of Nscale’s West Virginia data centre. The deal has not been signed and terms could still change, Reuters said, citing The Information, and Nvidia, Nscale and Anthropic did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. Bloomberg reported separately on 29 October, citing a person familiar with the matter, that the credit support would help backstop the electricity and construction costs for the West Virginia campus, which will be equipped with Nvidia chips. A post on X by Rohan Paul (@rohanpaul_ai), citing The Information, gave more detail: that Nvidia is negotiating to guarantee likely more than $5 billion of construction debt, that the unsigned deal would back the building’s value rather than its lease or chips, letting Nscale borrow at investment-grade terms, and that if Nscale missed construction payments Nvidia would cover them, run the site temporarily and arrange a sale and re-lease. We have not read The Information’s article, and neither Reuters nor Bloomberg gave a size for the guarantees.

What The Information Reported

Techmeme summarised the report as: “Nvidia is in talks to provide Nscale with billions of dollars in credit guarantees for debt to develop a 460MW data center that Anthropic plans to use”.

A second headline relayed by Walter Bloomberg described it as credit support for a cloud provider’s $45 billion Anthropic deal. The headlines do not give the size of the guarantees, their terms or the lenders.

Nscale’s $103.4 billion of active and contracted total contract value at 31 August 2026, by customer: Anthropic up to $44.6 billion and Microsoft up to $43.8 billion; the remaining $15.0 billion is our arithmetic (103.4 minus the two maximums), and the filing as quoted does not attribute it to other customers. What Was Posted on X

Walter Bloomberg on X, 29 Oct, relaying The Information: Nvidia is in talks to provide billions in credit support for a cloud provider’s $45 billion Anthropic deal.

Reuters posted on 30 October that Nvidia is in talks to give credit support for Nscale’s deal with Anthropic, crediting the report to The Information.

The account @ns123abc posted that Nvidia is in talks to backstop a more than $5B construction guarantee on Nscale’s 460 MW shell, tying it to Anthropic’s $45B Vera Rubin contract, and wrote that if Nscale defaults on the loan Nvidia would take physical title to the facility and become Anthropic’s direct landlord. Those terms are the poster’s description.

The Information’s post on X on 30 October, above, restates its report that Nvidia is in talks to provide billions of dollars in credit guarantees for Nscale’s $45 billion Anthropic data center project, and says the deal could help secure demand for Nvidia chips as Anthropic increasingly uses competing hardware.

The Anthropic Deal Behind the Debt

Bloomberg reported in August that Anthropic had agreed to spend $45 billion to rent AI cloud computing power from Nscale’s flagship data center development in West Virginia, over six years and representing about 460 megawatts of power, according to people familiar with the agreement. It said Nscale would use Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chips.

Reuters reported on 20 October that Nscale was in talks on a second deal with Anthropic that could be worth about $45 billion, for a second facility at its Monarch campus, which would deliver 460 megawatts, according to a person familiar with the matter. We covered those talks. The headlines we read do not say which building the guarantees would support.

By our arithmetic, $45 billion over six years is about $7.5 billion a year, and about $98 million of contract value per megawatt over the term.

What Nscale’s Filing Shows

Nscale’s S-1 puts its active and contracted total contract value at $103.4 billion as of 31 August 2026, of which about $2.6 billion was active. It lists Anthropic agreements that “provide for aggregate payments to us of up to approximately $44.6 billion”, subject to “our satisfaction of specified delivery and service availability requirements”.

It also lists Microsoft statements of work “that provide for payments to us of up to approximately $43.8 billion through December 2033”. By our arithmetic, Anthropic is about 43% of the book and Microsoft about 42%. Our piece on Nscale’s IPO covered the filing in full.

Nvidia Already Guarantees $108.5 Billion

Nvidia’s 10-Q for the quarter ended 26 July 2026 gives a maximum gross exposure of $108.5 billion under guarantees. That includes $105.0 billion for SB Energy guarantees on behalf of an affiliate of OpenAI, covering leases of about 4.25 gigawatts at a campus in Ohio, and $3.5 billion for land, power and shell guarantees on AI cloud partners’ data center leases. We covered that note.

The filing says the Ohio site will in exchange exclusively host Nvidia AI infrastructure, subject to limited exceptions. By our arithmetic, the $105 billion cap works out to about $24.7 billion per gigawatt of IT load.

Connecting the Coverage

Nvidia agreed to invest $3 billion in Meta’s share sale, and its 13F listed SpaceX shares worth $21.0 billion at 30 June 2026. On financing, Google, Amazon and Meta lined up $325 billion this year, data center bond yields are near 7% and Fluidstack is pitching a round at $40 billion.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the report describes Nvidia supporting the debt of a customer that uses Nvidia chips to serve Anthropic, in addition to the equity investments it has disclosed.

By our arithmetic, $45 billion over six years is about $7.5 billion a year of contract value, against about $2.6 billion of Nscale’s book that was active at 31 August.

As we read the filings, Nvidia’s 10-Q already lists $108.5 billion of guarantee exposure, most of it for one OpenAI-linked campus in Ohio.

Three Implications

FOR LENDERS Nscale’s S-1 makes the Anthropic payments subject to its satisfaction of specified delivery and service availability requirements.

FOR NVIDIA SHAREHOLDERS Nvidia’s 10-Q lists $105.0 billion of SB Energy guarantees and $3.5 billion for AI cloud partners’ leases; the headlines do not size any Nscale guarantee.

FOR ANTHROPIC’S COMPUTE PLANS Bloomberg reported the August deal at $45 billion over six years for about 460 megawatts of Vera Rubin capacity.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map.

The framework sets out to map the financing of AI: “How the money flows, where it cracks, what it buys, who can absorb it, and what happens when revenue can’t catch up.”

As we read it, The Information’s report is about the “how the money flows” part: a chip supplier backing debt for a data center built for one customer. The framework was published in May 2026 and does not discuss Nscale or Nvidia’s guarantees.

What Is Not Established

The size of any guarantee, its terms, the lenders, which Monarch building it would cover and whether the talks conclude are not in the headlines we read. Nvidia, Nscale and Anthropic had not commented in what we could read. The per-year, per-megawatt and percentage figures are our arithmetic.
