North Carolina’s $250M Anthropic Stake Was Marked at $560M

North Carolina’s state pension fund invested $250 million in Anthropic in March 2026, and its private-market value was around $560 million at 30 June, State Treasurer Brad Briner said on CNBC’s ‘Squawk Box’ on 29 October. By our arithmetic, that is 2.24 times the money put in.

Briner said the fund bought in at the $390 billion valuation round and passed on the next one. By our arithmetic, $250 million at $390 billion is about 0.064% of the company, which would be worth about $962 million at $1.5 trillion and about $1.28 billion at $2 trillion, the offer range Aswath Damodaran cites, if the stake were not diluted.

Business Pill · Concentration

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on concentration. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Anthropic, North Carolina or any party in this story.

The key insight: By our arithmetic from Briner’s figures on CNBC, North Carolina’s $250 million Anthropic investment was marked at 2.24 times its cost by 30 June, about 0.37% of the $150 billion fund.

What Briner Said

Briner told CNBC that his office manages $150 billion and that, as a fiduciary pension, “we’ve got to be invested where the growth is happening”. He said the fund decided when he took office to buy stakes in late-stage technology leaders, adding: “we didn’t want to take early stage risk”.

Asked when the Anthropic investment was made, Briner said it was in March of this year, in the $390 billion valuation round, and that the fund passed on the subsequent round. He said the 30 June private-market value was around $560 million and that he thinks the stake is probably worth more than that, judging by where the Street is anticipating things. CNBC’s introduction put the second-quarter value at about $570 million.

CNBC’s anchor named the fund’s other late-stage holdings as Anduril, Bending Spoons, Databricks and Revolut. Briner said the fund identifies market leaders first and then has to secure capacity to invest, and that Baillie Gifford has helped it do so in most of these deals.

North Carolina pension fund’s Anthropic stake: the $250 million invested in March 2026 and the roughly $560 million private-market value at 30 June, as Treasurer Brad Briner told CNBC, against its value at the $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion valuations Damodaran cites. The Mark and the Math

By our arithmetic, the move from $250 million to around $560 million took place between March and 30 June. The stake was bought at the $390 billion round Briner named; holding that share constant, the $560 million mark corresponds to a company valuation of roughly $870 billion.

Damodaran’s 28 October post, covered in our report on his valuation, values Anthropic’s equity at $1.475 trillion and cites an offer pricing range of $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion. Anthropic has not priced its offering. By our arithmetic, at $1.475 trillion the stake would be worth about $946 million, or 3.8 times its cost.

Small Next to the Index

Briner told CNBC the fund has about $2.5 billion of late-stage technology exposure but $35 billion in the S&P 500, and that the bulk of its AI exposure is through large public companies: “we’ve got $2.7 billion in Nvidia alone”.

By our arithmetic, the $560 million Anthropic mark is 0.37% of the $150 billion Briner said the office manages, and the Nvidia holding is about 4.8 times the Anthropic mark. The $2.5 billion of late-stage technology is about 1.7% of the $150 billion; the S&P 500 holding is about 23%.

Data Centers and Power

CNBC’s anchor said North Carolina’s governor and attorney general had recently called on state regulators to require prospective data center developers to shoulder more of the cost of additional power. Briner said slowing data center construction would be problematic for some local economies as well as for the AI trade.

He said the state had made progress on water and was making progress on power, and that it is “data center construction and power availability that are going to be the bottlenecks in the whole AI trade”. Asked whether public pushback changes his view of future investments, he said: “I think valuation does that more than anything”.

The Structural Read

As we read the interview, the Anthropic gain is large in percentage terms but small next to the $35 billion Briner said the fund holds in the S&P 500.

By our arithmetic, holding the March share constant, each $100 billion of Anthropic valuation is worth about $64 million to the fund.

As we read it, Briner tied the pace of the AI trade to data center construction and power availability, not to the private stakes.

Three Implications

FOR IPO PRICING By our arithmetic, at the $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion range Damodaran cites, the fund’s stake would be worth about $962 million to $1.28 billion if undiluted; Anthropic has not priced.

FOR PUBLIC PENSIONS Briner said the fund holds about $2.5 billion of late-stage technology and $35 billion in the S&P 500; by our arithmetic that is about 1.7% and 23% of $150 billion.

FOR DATA CENTER BUILDERS CNBC’s anchor said North Carolina’s governor and attorney general asked regulators to make prospective data center developers shoulder more of the cost of additional power.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map.

The framework sets out to trace “How the money flows, where it cracks, what it buys, who can absorb it, and what happens when revenue can’t catch up.”

As we read it, a public pension marking a private AI stake ahead of an offering is one place where that money shows up on a balance sheet. The framework does not discuss North Carolina or its pension fund.

What Is Not Established

The figures come from a television interview, not from a fund filing; we read CNBC’s machine-generated captions, which contain transcription errors, and we have not seen the fund’s holdings report. The interview does not give the size of North Carolina’s share of Anthropic, the vehicle used, or any lock-up terms.

Our share and value figures assume the stake was bought at the $390 billion round price and is not diluted; the $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion range is Damodaran’s description, not an Anthropic price.

The Bottom Line

Briner said North Carolina’s $250 million Anthropic investment from March was valued at around $560 million at 30 June, 2.24 times its cost by our arithmetic. At the $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion range Damodaran cites, the same share would be worth about $962 million to $1.28 billion. At the June mark, the stake was 0.37% of the $150 billion Briner said his office manages.
