Lilly, Which Runs an Nvidia AI Factory, Lifts Guide by $5.5B

Eli Lilly reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $24,397 million on 29 October, up 39%, and raised the midpoint of its 2026 revenue guidance by $5.5 billion to a range of $91.0 billion to $92.0 billion, its release says. Mounjaro brought in $10,723 million and Zepbound $5,352 million. By our arithmetic, the two tirzepatide brands were 65.9% of Lilly’s revenue, up from 57.4% a year earlier.

Lilly also runs what Nvidia calls the most powerful AI factory wholly owned and operated by a pharmaceutical company, built with 1,016 Nvidia Blackwell Ultra GPUs, according to Nvidia’s posts of October 2025 and February 2026. The 29 October release we read does not mention it. It reports research and development spending of $4,247 million in the quarter, up 23%.

Business Pill · Concentration

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on concentration. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Eli Lilly, Nvidia or any company in this story.

The key insight: By our arithmetic from Lilly’s release, Mounjaro and Zepbound were 65.9% of third-quarter revenue, up from 57.4% a year earlier, as volume rose 53% and realized prices fell 15%.

What Lilly Reported

The release says revenue rose 39% “driven by a 53% increase in volume, partially offset by a 15% decrease in realized prices”. In the U.S., revenue rose 34% to $15.1 billion on a 41% increase in volume and a 7% decrease in realized prices. Outside the U.S., revenue rose 47% to $9.3 billion on a 76% increase in volume and a 29% decrease in realized prices.

The quarter included “approximately $900 million of benefits”, the release says, “primarily from $410 million of Jardiance milestones (no further milestones remain) and favorable adjustments to rebate and discount estimates”. Reported earnings per share rose 16% to $7.22 and non-GAAP earnings per share rose 7% to $7.48, both including $4.57 of acquired in-process research and development charges.

Chair and chief executive David A. Ricks said in the release: “Lilly had another strong quarter, exceeding our prior expectations and allowing us to raise our full-year outlook”.

What Was Posted on X

Wall St Engine posted Eli Lilly’s third-quarter highlights on X at 10:46 UTC on 29 October 2026: revenue of $24.4 billion, up 39%, Mounjaro revenue of $10.7 billion, up 65%, and a raised 2026 revenue range of $91.0 billion to $92.0 billion. This piece checks those figures against Lilly’s release and adds the volume and price split and the product mix, which the post does not break down.

Two Brands, Two Thirds of Sales

Worldwide Mounjaro revenue rose 65% to $10,723 million, of which $5.0 billion came from the U.S. and $5.7 billion from outside it. U.S. Zepbound revenue rose 48% to $5.3 billion, which the release attributes to “strong demand, partially offset by lower realized prices”.

By our arithmetic, Mounjaro alone was 44.0% of Lilly’s third-quarter revenue and Zepbound 21.9%, against 37.0% and 20.4% a year earlier. All other products fell from 42.6% to 34.1% of the total, even though their revenue grew from $7,498 million to $8,322 million.

What the Raised Guide Implies

Lilly’s updated guidance table moves 2026 revenue from $85 billion to $87 billion to $91 billion to $92 billion, and performance margin from 49.0% to 50.5% to 52.0% to 52.5%. Earnings per share guidance moves from $35.50 to $36.50 to $35.00 to $36.00, which the release says reflects an increase of $4.07 at the midpoint, offset by $4.57 of third-quarter acquired in-process research and development charges.

Nine-month revenue was $67,170 million. By our arithmetic, the guidance range leaves $23,830 million to $24,830 million for the fourth quarter, against $24,397 million in the third quarter, which included the roughly $900 million of benefits the release lists.

Where the AI Factory Fits

Nvidia’s 28 October 2025 post says the AI factory “will be used to train large scale biomedical foundation and frontier models for drug discovery and development”, and that select models will be offered on Lilly TuneLab. Nvidia’s 26 February 2026 post says it delivers more than 9,000 petaflops of AI performance, “was assembled in just four months”, and that TuneLab gives biotech companies access to models “built on proprietary Lilly data generated at a cost of over $1 billion”.

The release reports $11,576 million of research and development spending over nine months, up 21%. It does not break out spending on computing or AI. On 19 October, METiS TechBio said Lilly had signed a drug discovery deal worth up to about $1.1 billion in milestones, as covered in our report on that deal.

The Structural Read

As we read the release, the growth came from selling far more units at lower prices: volume rose 76% outside the U.S. while realized prices there fell 29%.

By our arithmetic, revenue from all products other than Mounjaro and Zepbound grew from $7,498 million to $8,322 million but fell from 42.6% to 34.1% of the total.

As we read it, the release reports research and development of $4,247 million, or 17.4% of revenue by our arithmetic, without breaking out spending on the AI factory NVIDIA describes.

Three Implications

FOR INVESTORS By our arithmetic, Lilly’s raised revenue range leaves $23,830 million to $24,830 million for the fourth quarter, after third-quarter revenue that included roughly $900 million of benefits.

FOR AI SUPPLIERS NVIDIA’s posts describe Lilly’s AI factory as built with 1,016 Blackwell Ultra GPUs and assembled in four months; Lilly’s release does not give its cost.

FOR BIOTECH PARTNERS NVIDIA’s 26 February 2026 post says TuneLab models are built on Lilly data generated at a cost of over $1 billion, and by our arithmetic $1 billion alone equals 23.5% of Lilly’s $4,247 million of third-quarter research and development.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Four Intelligence Moats.

The framework describes The Container Moat as “built by closed data loops inside a customer’s environment, nascent but the deepest position in the stack.”

As we read it, TuneLab’s federated set-up, which NVIDIA says keeps biotech partners’ data private and separate, is one example of that kind of loop. The framework does not discuss Lilly.

What Is Not Established

The documents we read do not give the cost of Lilly’s AI factory, the share of research and development spent on AI, or any revenue from TuneLab. The release does not link its raised guidance to AI, and nothing in it says which products or programmes the AI factory has worked on.

The fourth-quarter range is our arithmetic from the full-year guidance, not a figure Lilly reported. The volume and price effects are as Lilly reports them; they do not add exactly to revenue growth.

This week’s issue: the AI build is not short of demand for its parts. It is short of cheap money, and its end revenue rests on a narrow base of large, often venture-funded buyers.

The Bottom Line

By our arithmetic, Mounjaro and Zepbound were 65.9% of Lilly’s third-quarter revenue of $24,397 million, up from 57.4%, as volume rose 53% and realized prices fell 15%. Lilly raised its 2026 revenue range to $91.0 billion to $92.0 billion. Its AI factory, which Nvidia says holds 1,016 Blackwell Ultra GPUs, does not appear in the release.
