Meta’s Muse app was downloaded an estimated 942,000 times on the US App Store in the week to 29 October, against 556,000 for ChatGPT, according to FoxData estimates via ASO World charted in a post on X by Pablo Martí on 4 November. That is 1.69 downloads of Muse for every one of ChatGPT, by our arithmetic. The same chart puts Google Gemini at 341,000 and Grok at 239,000.
These are third-party estimates for US iOS only, not company figures. The post calls it “1.7x ChatGPT, eight weeks after launch”.
Business Pill · Distribution Advantage
An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on distribution advantage. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Muse or ChatGPT.

The key insight: FoxData estimates charted on X put Muse at 942,000 US iOS downloads in the week to 29 October against 556,000 for ChatGPT, 1.69 times by our arithmetic, and Apple’s charts on 4 November ranked Muse above ChatGPT in the US top free list and first in Japan’s Productivity chart; downloads are installs, not usage.
The Download Numbers
The chart’s source line reads “FoxData estimates via ASO World, US iOS”. By our arithmetic, Muse’s estimated 942,000 is 386,000 more than ChatGPT’s, about 2.8 times Gemini’s and about 3.9 times Grok’s, and equal to 83% of the three rivals combined.
Apple’s own top-free chart points the same way. When we read Apple’s US top free apps feed at 19:56 UTC on 4 November, Muse from Meta ranked third across all categories, ahead of ChatGPT in fifth, Claude in eighth and Google Gemini in tenth.

What Was Posted on X
Pablo MartΓ’s post on X of 4 November listing last week’s US App Store downloads: Muse 942K, ChatGPT 556K, Gemini 341K and Grok 239K. It says Muse is at 1.7x ChatGPT eight weeks after launch and #1 in Productivity in Japan, ahead of ChatGPT. Its chart cites FoxData estimates via ASO World.
A post by @chetaslua on 4 November claiming that Crouton Alpha, the free stealth model on OpenRouter and OpenCode, is Meta, citing network attribution to Facebook Inc. It quotes OpenCode’s post that Crouton Alpha is free for the next week, with 1M context, multi-modal, no training on data and limited to certain regions. Meta had not confirmed the claim as of 20:59 UTC on 4 November, as far as the publication found.
Japan: First in Productivity
The post also says that in Japan Muse is “#1 in Productivity, ahead of ChatGPT”. Apple’s Japan top free Productivity chart feed, which we read at 19:56 UTC on 4 November, matched it: Muse from Meta first, ChatGPT second, Google Gemini third and Claude by Anthropic fourth.
Downloads Are Not Usage
Download counts measure installs, not time spent. Our earlier piece found that Muse users give it 7.5 minutes a day against 23 for ChatGPT, according to Similarweb’s US data. And AMD’s chief executive said on 3 November that more than 10 million people activated Meta’s Muse agents in their first six weeks.
Meta’s Model Push
Two other Meta-related items surfaced on X the same day. Axios reported that Meta bought the coding startup Conductor, which said it is joining Meta. Separately, a developer who posts as @chetaslua claimed that Crouton Alpha, a free stealth model on OpenRouter and OpenCode, “is Meta”, citing network attribution: “crouton-alpha →Facebook Inc” and “meta/muse-spark-1.3 → same Meta network”, and adding that it was “not a tokenizer guess , not a self-ID”.
That is one developer’s claim from network traces. As of 20:59 UTC on 4 November, Meta had not confirmed it, and neither had OpenRouter, as far as we found: Meta’s newsroom feed did not mention Crouton Alpha, a web search found no statement from either company, and OpenRouter’s model page names no developer.
What is first-party is the model’s availability. OpenCode posted on 3 November that “Crouton Alpha (stealth model) is free for the next week”, with “1M Context”, “Multi-modal”, “No training on data” and “Limited to certain regions”. OpenRouter’s listing, created on 3 November, describes “a lightweight model built for scalable coding, agentic, and multimodal workflows”, free to use, with a 1,048,576-token context window.

Connecting the Coverage
On Meta’s financing, Meta filed a five-part bond sale with debt at 23% of capital. On monetisation, ChatGPT’s ads make about $0.83 a user a year against Meta’s $69.
The Structural Read
As we read the numbers together, Muse leads on installs while, per Similarweb’s earlier US data, ChatGPT users spent 23 minutes a day in the app against 7.5 for Muse.
As we read the Crouton Alpha posts, the only first-party facts are the model’s terms: free for a week, 1M context, multimodal and no training on data, per OpenCode; who built it is still a claim.

Three Implications
FOR OPENAI In this estimate ChatGPT drew 556,000 US iOS downloads in the week, behind Muse’s 942,000.
FOR META Apple’s Japan Productivity chart had Muse first and ChatGPT second when we read it on 4 November.
FOR DEVELOPERS OpenCode says Crouton Alpha is free for the next week with a 1M context; its developer has not been confirmed.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Agentic Harness War.
The framework says: “The platform controlling skill creation and distribution gains long-term strategic leverage.”
As we read it, the download chart measures the distribution half of that sentence: Meta reaches installs at scale, while the time-spent gap shows distribution has not yet turned into the same daily use. The framework does not discuss Muse.

What Is Not Established
The download figures are FoxData’s estimates as charted by Pablo Martí, not Meta or OpenAI figures, and cover US iOS only; we could not open FoxData’s underlying data. They do not show active use, retention or revenue. The Crouton Alpha attribution rests on one developer’s network trace and is not confirmed by Meta, OpenRouter or OpenCode. The 1.69 times ratio and the other multiples are our arithmetic.
The Bottom Line
FoxData estimates charted on X put Muse at 942,000 US iOS downloads in the week to 29 October against ChatGPT’s 556,000, 1.69 times by our arithmetic, and Apple’s own charts on 4 November ranked Muse ahead of ChatGPT in the US top free list and first in Japan’s Productivity chart. A separate claim that the free Crouton Alpha model is Meta’s remains unconfirmed.

A note on sourcing. Download figures are FoxData estimates via ASO World as charted on X by Pablo MartΓ, not company data. Rankings are from Apple’s App Store chart feeds read at 19:56 UTC on 4 November 2026. The Crouton Alpha attribution is a developer’s claim, unconfirmed by Meta or OpenRouter as of 20:59 UTC; its specs are from OpenCode and OpenRouter. Ratios are our arithmetic.
