Barclays Expects Half Its Developers on Claude Code by 2026

Barclays expects Claude Code adoption to reach 50% of its developer population by the end of 2026, rising to a majority of software engineers in 2027, Anthropic said in a post on 1 October 2026.

The same post says Claude models already process approximately 120,000 emails each day in Barclays’ Global Markets business, and that more than 16,000 colleagues use a Claude-powered knowledge assistant.

A one-minute explainer of retrieval-augmented generation: a model answers from documents it retrieves at the moment of the question rather than only from what it learned in training. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this story.

The key insight: As we read it, the post describes Claude at three depths inside one bank: a knowledge assistant that answers questions, an email platform that routes about 120,000 client emails a day, and a coding tool Barclays expects half its developers to use by the end of 2026.

What Barclays Is Rolling Out

According to the post, Barclays is extending Claude across the bank “to accelerate software development, modernize legacy systems, and improve operational efficiency.”

The coding target is the headline. The post gives two milestones for Claude Code, Anthropic’s agentic coding tool: 50% of Barclays’ developer population by the end of 2026, and a majority of software engineers in 2027.

The announcement is Anthropic’s, published on anthropic.com on 1 October, and it quotes two Barclays executives, both Group Co-Chief Operating Officers: Anne Marie Darling and Craig Bright.

Claude at Barclays as Anthropic’s 1 October 2026 post describes it: approximately 120,000 emails a day classified and routed in Global Markets, more than 16,000 colleagues on the Colleague Knowledge Assistant, over one million searches, supporting staff who serve over 20 million UK retail customers.

The Knowledge Assistant

The first use case the post describes is the Colleague Knowledge Assistant, which helps Barclays UK employees find information when supporting their over 20 million UK retail customers.

It has been live since 2025 and is powered by Claude through a retrieval-augmented generation architecture, the post says. More than 16,000 colleagues have adopted it, and it has handled over one million searches.

Email Routing in Global Markets

The second use case sits in Barclays’ Global Markets business. Teams use Claude models to classify and enrich incoming client emails and to determine the processing route for each one.

The platform processes approximately 120,000 emails each day, the post says, “reducing manual handling activity while helping colleagues identify and act on relevant information more efficiently.”

What the Executives Said

Craig Bright framed the coding work around legacy systems: “At Barclays, we’re using Claude to help modernize legacy platforms, improve software quality, and allow our technical experts to focus on the most complex challenges.”

Anne Marie Darling said: “Expanding the use of Claude across Barclays is about more than adopting AI.” She described the aim as reducing time spent on routine activities and streamlining decision-making.

Paul Smith, Anthropic’s Chief Commercial Officer, described the work with Barclays as “a significant milestone for us in the UK.” He summarised it as: “Claude now helps 16,000 Barclays’ colleagues find answers for customers, sorts 120,000 emails a day, and will be in the hands of most Barclays engineers by 2027.”

The Structural Read

The two use cases already live are retrieval and routing. The knowledge assistant runs on a retrieval-augmented generation architecture, the post says, and the Global Markets platform classifies, enriches and routes incoming emails.

The coding rollout is stated as an expectation with dates: 50% of the developer population by the end of 2026 and a majority of software engineers in 2027. Craig Bright ties it to modernising legacy platforms.

The post pairs each step with governance language: robust governance, security controls and human oversight on AI use cases, in a bank it calls highly regulated.

Three Implications

BANK TECHNOLOGY LEADERS Barclays gives dated adoption milestones for Claude Code: 50% of its developer population by the end of 2026, a majority of software engineers in 2027.

OPERATIONS TEAMS The Global Markets example is email triage at volume: the post says the platform processes approximately 120,000 emails each day and reduces manual handling activity.

ENTERPRISE AI VENDORS The post’s first live use case is internal: a knowledge assistant adopted by more than 16,000 colleagues, live since 2025, with over one million searches.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework Enterprise AI: From Software to Substrate.

The framework puts it this way: “Enterprise SaaS is migrating from ‘tool you buy’ to ‘infrastructure you’re woven into.’ The value proposition shifts from features to integration depth.”

As we read it, the Barclays post describes integration at three depths: a knowledge layer for 16,000 colleagues, an email-routing layer in Global Markets, and the bank’s software development itself through Claude Code.

What Is Not Established

The post does not give the number of developers at Barclays, the value of the agreement, or any cost or time savings in figures. The 50% and majority milestones are Barclays’ expectations as the post reports them, not adoption already reached.

The post describes governance, security controls and human oversight in general terms; it does not say which tasks Claude Code is allowed to perform unsupervised.

The Bottom Line

Anthropic’s 1 October post puts numbers on Claude at Barclays: 16,000 colleagues on a knowledge assistant, around 120,000 emails a day routed in Global Markets, and an expected 50% of developers on Claude Code by the end of 2026.
