Anthropic and Buyout Firm Hg Plan a European AI Consultancy

Anthropic and the London-based buyout firm Hg have agreed to launch a consultancy by the end of 2026 to embed AI consultants and engineers into European businesses, the Financial Times reported on 23 October, citing people familiar with the matter. The FT describes it as a new company backed by Anthropic and Hg that “will advise companies on how to deploy AI”.

In plain words, this is a services firm: instead of only selling access to Claude, Anthropic would back a business whose staff sit inside client companies and build the AI systems with them. The FT’s report does not give, in the parts we could read, the company’s name, the split of ownership, the capital committed or the number of staff.

Business Pill · FORWARD DEPLOYED ENGINEERS

A one-minute explainer of what a forward deployed engineer does. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this piece.

The key insight: As we read it, the new element is the market: the FT reports a consultancy that will embed AI consultants and engineers into European businesses, backed by Anthropic and Hg and due to launch by the end of 2026, citing people familiar with the matter.

What the FT Reported

  • Who. Anthropic and Hg, which the FT calls a UK buyout group, will back the new company, according to the FT.
  • What. The company will embed AI consultants and engineers into European businesses and advise companies on how to deploy AI, per the FT as summarised by Techmeme.
  • When. The two firms have agreed to launch it by the end of 2026, the FT reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
  • What we could not read. The FT’s article is behind a paywall; we read its headline, its standfirst and Techmeme’s summary, and we did not find an Anthropic or Hg statement on the deal as of 10:45 UTC on 23 October.

Three Anthropic moves in 2026, as each source states it: the May services company with Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman and Goldman Sachs (Anthropic), the September venture with Hg (Hg), and the consultancy with Hg the FT reported on 23 October, citing people familiar with the matter.

The Earlier Hg Deal

On 21 September, Hg announced “a new strategic venture to work with Anthropic to bring Claude’s agentic capabilities to the Hg portfolio and drive material value creation.” Hg said its AI product incubator, Hg Catalyst, would work directly with Anthropic to deploy agentic AI across the portfolio. The relationship dates back to early 2024, and Hg cited “over 1,600 live AI projects across the Hg portfolio, representing over $260m of budgeted EBITDA impact.”

Guillaume Princen, Head of International, Digital Native Businesses at Anthropic, said in that release: “We’re excited to work with Hg to keep driving further transformation across both their own business, as well as the portfolio companies they work with.” As we read it, the FT’s report describes a client base of European businesses, where the September release described Hg’s own portfolio.

The May Services Firm

In May, Anthropic announced a new AI services company with Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman and Goldman Sachs that “will work with mid-sized companies across sectors to bring Claude into their most important operations.” Anthropic’s post said “Applied AI engineers from Anthropic will work alongside the firm’s engineering team”, and Fortune reported that the venture was backed by approximately $1.5 billion in committed capital, citing the Wall Street Journal.

Connecting the Coverage

Our labs-as-services piece reported on 22 October that TechCrunch wrote in July that labs like Anthropic and OpenAI “have spun up separate businesses dedicated to deploying AI engineers to their customers’ offices”, naming Anthropic’s Ode, valued at $1.5 billion, and OpenAI’s Deployment Company. Our deployment gap explainer reported that OpenAI founded its forward deployed engineering team in early 2025 to close what it calls “the deployment gap”.

Our Uber piece reported that Uber is moving OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work from a 1,000-employee pilot to more than 30,000 employees, according to OpenAI’s post of 22 October. What’s new: the FT’s report would add a European consultancy to Anthropic’s May services firm, with a partner that describes itself as “the leading investor in European and transatlantic software and services businesses”.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the pattern is a lab selling deployment, not only model access: Anthropic’s May post described Applied AI engineers working alongside a services firm’s team, and the FT’s report describes consultants and engineers embedded in client businesses.

As we read it, the partner type matters: in both cases Anthropic’s co-backers are investment firms, Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman and Goldman Sachs in May and Hg now, rather than a traditional consultancy.

As we read it, the open questions are the terms: the parts of the FT’s report we could read give no name, stake split, capital or headcount.

Hg, 21 September 2026

“Hg Catalyst and Anthropic will work more closely together on what it takes to make agentic AI deliver measurable results inside real businesses.”

Three Implications

FOR EUROPEAN COMPANIES The FT describes a firm that will advise companies on how to deploy AI and embed consultants and engineers with them; the launch is due by the end of 2026.

FOR HG’S PORTFOLIO Hg’s September release cited over 1,600 live AI projects across its portfolio, representing over $260m of budgeted EBITDA impact.

FOR READERS TRACKING TERMS The name, ownership split, capital and headcount are not in the parts of the FT’s report we could read.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Embedding Business Model.

The framework’s starting point: “Your product stops being the thing companies buy and becomes the thing other systems assume exists.”

As we read it, a consultancy that embeds engineers inside client businesses is one route to that position for Claude. The framework was published in December 2025 and does not discuss Anthropic’s services firms or Hg.

What Is Not Established

The parts of the FT’s report we could read do not give the new company’s name, how ownership is split between Anthropic and Hg, how much capital is committed, its planned headcount, or its first countries. We did not find an Anthropic or Hg statement on the deal as of 10:45 UTC on 23 October, and the sources we read do not say whether the new company is linked to Ode or to the May services firm. We did not contact either company. Nothing here is investment advice.
