ChatGPT Lost 24 Points of Market Share in 12 Months — Here’s Who Took It

Market Data — SimilarWeb data shows ChatGPT’s share of Gen AI website traffic dropped from 76.4% to 52.7% in 12 months. The model layer is fragmenting in real time — and the winners are not who you’d expect.

Three Stories in One Chart

1. ChatGPT is still dominant — but bleeding fast.

76.4% → 52.7% in 12 months. Still #1 by far. But losing ~2 percentage points per month. At this rate, ChatGPT drops below 50% by July 2026. The 900M weekly users are real — but the share is compressing as competitors grow faster.

This is why OpenAI is considering drastic price cuts. The traffic data confirms: they’re losing ground, not just facing competition.

2. Gemini is the biggest winner — and nobody talks about it.

8.9% → 27.3%. Gemini tripled its share in 12 months. This is Google’s distribution advantage at work — Gemini is embedded in Search, Android, YouTube, Gmail, Google Workspace. Every Google product becomes a Gemini onramp.

And now Apple is using Gemini to power Siri AI — adding 2 billion more devices as distribution endpoints. Gemini doesn’t need to win benchmarks. It wins by being everywhere.

This is Harness Theory from Google’s side: the model becomes infrastructure that other companies harness. Google doesn’t need you to visit gemini.google.com. It needs Gemini running inside every surface you already use.

3. Claude’s growth rate is the most impressive.

1.6% → 8.9%. That’s 456% growth in 12 months. The absolute share is still small — but the trajectory is exponential. With 952 million monthly visits and Fable 5 hitting 2x Opus usage in 24 hours, Claude is on track to cross 10% share by summer.

Combined with Anthropic overtaking OpenAI in enterprise adoption (Ramp data), the picture is clear: Claude wins enterprise, ChatGPT holds consumer, Gemini captures everything in between through distribution.

The Map of AI Read

This chart is Layer 4 (Models) fragmenting in real time.

12 months ago, the model layer was a near-monopoly (ChatGPT at 76%). Today it’s a three-player market (ChatGPT 53%, Gemini 27%, Claude 9%) with a long tail. This is exactly what the Map of AI predicts: the model layer commoditizes while the interface layer above it captures the rents.

The timing is not coincidental:

The model layer had two years of near-monopoly. That era is over.
