Apple CEO Ternus Plans Design Shakeup — 2027 Road Map Is All AI Hardware

Apple’s incoming CEO John Ternus is planning to shake up the design organization and has a 2027 road map that bets the company’s next decade on AI-native hardware: foldable iPhone, camera AirPods, smart glasses. The post-Cook era begins with a product thesis that looks nothing like the last ten years.

What Bloomberg Reports

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that John Ternus — who officially takes over as Apple CEO in September 2026 when the iPhone 18 ships — is planning to reset Apple’s design organization and reassert the importance of the design group in the company’s product direction.

Ternus told staff: “We’ll keep focusing on design, because design is core to what we do at Apple.” That sounds like continuity, but the subtext is reform — under the later Cook years, Apple’s design influence had diminished relative to engineering and operations. Ternus wants to reverse that.

The 2027 road map is where the thesis becomes concrete:

Hardware

iPhone 20 — 20th Anniversary Edition

A full reset for the iPhone’s 20th birthday in 2027. Part of Apple’s three-year plan to “reinvent” the iPhone form factor — the most significant hardware redesign since the iPhone X.

Form Factor

Foldable iPhone — Second Generation

Apple’s foldable sequel in the 2027 lineup. Ternus’s hardware engineering background makes this his signature product — a form factor that Samsung has owned for five years while Apple watched.

AI Wearable

Camera AirPods — Siri Gets Eyes

AirPods with onboard cameras that give Siri visual context about the user’s surroundings. Apple’s first AI-native wearable — not a screen you look at, but sensors that look for you.

Ambient Computing

N50 Smart Glasses — Late 2027

Apple’s answer to Meta Ray-Bans. Internally codenamed N50. If shipped, this would be Apple’s first truly new product category since the Vision Pro — and a direct play on ambient AI.

The Structural Read

Every product on the 2027 road map is an AI delivery vehicle. Camera AirPods give Siri visual context. Smart glasses put AI in the ambient field. The foldable creates a new form factor for AI interaction. The iPhone 20 anniversary redesign is the chassis for Apple Intelligence’s next generation.

This is not a design refresh. It is Apple repositioning its entire hardware portfolio around a single thesis: AI needs new surfaces, and Apple controls the surfaces.

The key insight: Ternus is a hardware engineer, not a designer or a software executive. His CEO thesis is that the next decade of Apple’s value comes from new form factors — not incremental refinements to the rectangle in your pocket. Camera AirPods and smart glasses are bets that AI’s primary interface won’t be a screen. That is a radical departure for a company that has been a screen company for 20 years.

THE DESIGN RESET IS A POWER MOVE

Ternus reasserting design’s importance is a signal that the Cook-era operations-first culture is being rebalanced. Under Cook, Apple optimized margins. Under Ternus, the bet is that Apple needs to out-design the competition again — because in the AI era, the interface is the product.

CAMERA AIRPODS ARE THE SLEEPER

Everyone is watching the foldable. The camera AirPods are the more important product. They give Apple’s AI assistant spatial awareness without requiring a screen. That is the ambient computing thesis in its most deployable form — 100M+ AirPods users getting AI vision overnight.

THE META RACE IS ON

Meta Ray-Bans with AI have sold millions. Apple’s N50 smart glasses are the direct response. But Apple has a distribution advantage Meta doesn’t: 2 billion active devices that the glasses integrate with instantly. The glasses don’t need to be good on their own — they need to be good with an iPhone.

The Bottom Line

The post-Cook era begins with a bet that Apple’s next decade is not about better phones — it is about new surfaces for AI. Camera AirPods, smart glasses, foldables, and the 20th anniversary iPhone are all delivery vehicles for the same thesis: AI needs hardware designed for it, and Apple is the company that designs hardware. Ternus is not inheriting Cook’s playbook. He is writing a new one — and the 2027 road map is the opening chapter.

The AI Supercycle — Why Hardware Captures Value When Software Commoditizes

Apple’s 2027 bet is a substrate-layer play: control the surfaces AI runs on, and you capture the value the software layer cannot. The AI Supercycle maps where this advantage forms.
