Spotify Weighs a $4-$5 AI Remix Add-On for Early 2027

Spotify aims to launch an AI-powered music remix service in the first quarter of 2027 and is considering charging subscribers an additional $4 to $5 a month for it, the Financial Times reported on 30 October, citing people familiar with the plans, according to Reuters.

By our arithmetic, every 10% of Spotify’s 306 million Premium subscribers who paid that add-on would bring in $1.47 billion to $1.84 billion a year. If every Premium subscriber paid, an illustrative ceiling, it would be $14.7 billion to $18.4 billion a year. No take-up figure has been reported.

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on distribution advantage. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Spotify or this report.

The key insight: Spotify is considering a $4-to-$5 monthly AI remix add-on for early 2027, the FT reported; by our arithmetic each 10% of its 306 million Premium subscribers would be worth $1.47 billion to $1.84 billion a year at that price.

What Spotify Is Planning

The service would let paying subscribers use AI to create their own versions of songs, such as transforming a folk song into a dance track or making one artist appear to cover another’s music, the FT report said, according to Reuters. Spotify is targeting a potential unveiling around the Grammy Awards in February, Reuters reported, citing the FT.

Under Spotify’s plan, royalties from fan-created remixes would flow back to the original artists, and plays would count towards the original songs in Spotify’s charts, the newspaper said, according to Reuters. Bol News, which republished the FT’s account, reported that Spotify is also developing a system for remixes to appear in playlists.

Who Has Signed and Who Has Not

Spotify has struck licensing deals with Universal Music Group, the independent label group Merlin and the French music company Believe for the remix feature, the FT said, according to Reuters. The company is still negotiating with Sony Music and Warner Music, according to the same report.

Spotify and Universal have been meeting with individual artists to persuade them to make their music available for the service, according to people familiar with the discussions, Bol News reported in its account of the FT story. Spotify did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The post above, by @choblin29, relays the FT report and also lists Kobalt among the companies that have signed deals. Kobalt does not appear in the Reuters or Bol News accounts of the FT story, and we have not confirmed it.

Sony and Warner’s publishing arms are already in a separate dispute with an AI company: Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell sued Anthropic over training data, as we reported in August. Universal took a different route with ElevenLabs, as we reported on its licensed AI music platform.

How It Differs From Suno

The service would differ from AI music generators such as Suno, which let users create entirely new songs from text prompts, Bol News reported in its account of the FT story. Spotify’s product would instead let fans manipulate existing songs by artists who have agreed to participate, according to the same account.

Italy’s antitrust authority opened a probe into Suno’s terms, as we reported in October, and we have covered how Deezer handles AI uploads on its service.

The Subscriber Math

Spotify reported 306 million Premium subscribers in the third quarter of 2026, up 9% from a year earlier, and 788 million monthly active users, according to its third-quarter release of 22 October. Total revenue rose 16% to €5.0 billion and operating income reached €672 million, the release said.

Our arithmetic multiplies the 306 million Premium subscribers by a share of take-up, by $4 or $5 a month and by 12 months. At 5% the add-on would be $0.73 billion to $0.92 billion a year; at 25% it would be $3.67 billion to $4.59 billion. These are illustrative scenarios, not estimates. Spotify reports in euros and the reported add-on price is in dollars, so we have not converted currencies.

The Structural Read

As we read the FT report, Spotify’s plan rests on licences rather than a new model: Universal, Merlin and Believe have signed, and Sony and Warner are still negotiating, according to Reuters’ account.

As we read it, the design keeps the original recording at the centre: royalties from remixes would flow to the original artists and plays would count towards the original songs, the FT reported.

By our arithmetic, the add-on is priced per subscriber rather than per remix, so its revenue scales with how many of the 306 million Premium subscribers opt in, not with how many remixes they make.

Three Implications

FOR LABELS STILL NEGOTIATING Sony Music and Warner Music have not signed, according to the FT report as relayed by Reuters.

FOR ARTISTS Royalties from fan-created remixes would flow back to the original artists, the FT reported, and artists would be asked to make their music available.

FOR SPOTIFY’S REVENUE MIX By our arithmetic, each 10% take-up at $4 to $5 a month would be $1.47 billion to $1.84 billion a year, an illustrative figure only.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Four Intelligence Moats.

The framework opens: “Every AI paradigm produces a different kind of moat.”

As we read the FT report, the assets Spotify is putting forward are licences to existing recordings and its paying subscribers rather than a new model. The framework was published in July 2026 and does not discuss Spotify.

What Is Not Established

The $4-to-$5 price is under consideration, the launch is a target, and the unveiling date is a possibility, according to the FT report as relayed by Reuters. Spotify has not announced the service. Sony Music and Warner Music have not signed, according to the same report. The FT article is behind a paywall; we read Reuters’ account, the Bol News account and the FT headline. The take-up scenarios and ceiling are our arithmetic and assume no change in the subscriber base.
