Spotify said on 22 October 2026 that it expects operating income of EUR 820 million in the fourth quarter, after EUR 672 million in the third, in its Q3 2026 shareholder deck. Its operating expenses rose 26% to EUR 967 million in the third quarter. Excluding currency and Social Charges, the deck says the 19% increase was “primarily driven by an increase in marketing alongside cloud and AI spend in support of growth initiatives.”
At the European Central Bank reference rate of 1.1234 dollars per euro on 21 October 2026, the fourth-quarter guide is about $921 million and third-quarter operating expenses about $1.09 billion (our conversion).

Spot Q3 2026 explained · video
The quarter in about a minute and a half, from our published pieces (22 Oct 2026).
The key insight: As we read it, Spotify is paying for AI out of a growing business rather than cutting to fund it: operating expenses rose 26% with marketing and “cloud/AI spend” named as the drivers, while its full-time workforce held at 7,284 and it still guided fourth-quarter operating income to EUR 820 million.
What Spotify Reported
Total revenue was EUR 4,969 million, up 16% year on year, or 14% at constant currency. Gross margin was 33.0%, up 136 basis points, which the deck calls a third-quarter record. Operating income was EUR 672 million, a 13.5% margin, and free cash flow was EUR 735 million.
Monthly active users grew 11% to 788 million and Premium subscribers grew 9% to 306 million. The deck says the quarter had “all of our KPIs meeting or exceeding guidance.”

Where AI Shows Up
Spotify does not break out its AI spending as a separate number. Its deck lists “temporarily elevated growth in marketing and cloud/AI spend” as the driver of higher operating expenses, excluding Social Charges. Its Q2 deck, dated 4 August 2026, used similar wording, “temporary investments in marketing and cloud/AI spend.”
The product section names one AI agent integration: Spotify “Launched Spotify integration with Muse to give listeners new ways to enjoy their favorite audio content through an AI agent conversation.” The deck says listeners can ask their agent to play music, save songs to their Library and build personalized playlists. It does not name Muse’s developer.
The workforce was 7,284 full-time employees at the end of the third quarter, against 7,302 at the end of the second, according to the two decks.
The Fourth-Quarter Outlook
For the fourth quarter, Spotify guides to total revenue of EUR 5.2 billion, gross margin of 33.8%, 818 million monthly active users and 316 million Premium subscribers, alongside the EUR 820 million operating income figure. The deck says the outlook assumes a tailwind of about 230 basis points from currency.
EUR 820 million would be about 17% above the EUR 701 million of operating income in the fourth quarter of 2025, according to the deck’s financial summary (our arithmetic).
Connecting the Coverage
On 21 October our Muse piece reported Meta’s statement that its AI agent app, also called Muse, has been adopted by more than 10 million users. Spotify’s deck does not say whether its integration is with Meta’s app.
On 19 October our token-rationing piece reported a Goldman Sachs report, via The Economic Times, saying Spotify is weighing the cost of employees against spending more on AI tokens.
And on 22 October our cost-to-outcome piece reported Satya Nadella’s annual letter line that customers will increasingly “measure the cost of tokens against the outcomes they produce.”
The Structural Read
As we read it, the deck treats the AI spend as a cost of growth, not a separate product line: it calls the increase “temporarily elevated growth in marketing and cloud/AI spend” and gives no AI revenue or usage figure.
As we read it, the Muse integration is a distribution bet: the deck says listeners can now reach Spotify “through an AI agent conversation”, which puts an agent between some listeners and Spotify’s own app.
As we read it, the margin picture is mixed: gross margin rose 136 basis points to 33.0%, while operating margin was 13.5% against 13.6% a year earlier, according to the deck’s financial summary.

Three Implications
FOR SPOTIFY SHAREHOLDERS The deck guides fourth-quarter operating income to EUR 820 million on EUR 5.2 billion of revenue; as we read it, the test is whether the “temporarily elevated” cloud and AI spend it describes eases as the deck implies.
FOR AI AGENT BUILDERS Spotify says it launched an integration with Muse so listeners can play music and build playlists through an agent; as we read it, consumer apps are starting to treat agents as a channel, as our Muse and Walmart coverage has tracked.
FOR FINANCE TEAMS Spotify reports the AI cost inside operating expenses rather than as its own line; as we read it, that is the measurement gap the token-economy framework below describes.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The CFOโs Guide to the Token Economy.
The framework’s core line: the new job of finance is to “manage the ratio between the two โ work produced per token burned. That ratio is the gross-margin equation of the agentic era.”
As we read it, Spotify’s deck names cloud and AI spend as a cost driver without a figure for the work it produces, which is the ratio the framework says finance should manage. The framework was published in June 2026 and does not discuss Spotify.
What Is Not Established
Spotify does not say how much of the cost increase is cloud and AI spend rather than marketing, and gives no usage figure for the Muse integration. The fourth-quarter figures are guidance, not results.

The Bottom Line
Spotify guided to EUR 820 million of fourth-quarter operating income after a third quarter in which its operating expenses rose 26%, with the deck naming marketing and cloud and AI spend as the main drivers. It also launched an integration with an AI agent called Muse, while its full-time workforce held near 7,300.
