Reducto Brings Free Word, Excel Editing to ChatGPT, Codex

Document-processing startup Reducto has released Reducto Office, a free plugin that brings editing of Word documents, PowerPoint presentations and Excel spreadsheets to ChatGPT and Codex, the company announced on 29 October. It is free to use, with usage limits.

The launch came 380 days after Reducto announced its $75M Series B led by Andreessen Horowitz, by our arithmetic from the dates of the two announcements.

Business Pill · The Model and the Harness

A short explainer on the model and the harness, the software around a model that decides what it can do. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about Reducto.

The key insight: As we read the launch, the product is fidelity rather than text: Reducto says Office edits the file’s underlying structure and keeps formatting, comments and tracked changes, the details its post says are lost when an AI workflow reduces a document to plain text.

What the Plugin Does

Reducto describes Office as “a full-fidelity, agent-native office suite that lets you make edits while preserving formatting, comments, and tracked changes”. It says edits are applied to the file’s underlying structure and shown in a live editor next to the chat.

For Word documents, the blog lists six groups of features: writing and revising, formatting, tables, document details such as footnotes and comments, tracked changes, and rich content such as charts and equations. Its product page says PDFs and old .doc files open as editable Word documents, and that workbooks keep “live formulas”.

The page also says users and ChatGPT can work in the same file at the same time, that redlines can be accepted or rejected one at a time, and that every version is saved so an earlier one can be restored.

Why Formatting Is the Point

Reducto’s post argues that when an AI workflow “reduces a document to plain text, details such as formatting, table structure and review history can be lost”, and that generating a replacement file “leaves people comparing versions or moving edits back into the original”.

Its examples are contract review with tracked changes, translating a PowerPoint deck while keeping its design, and turning a budget into an Excel workbook that can still be edited.

The Business Lever: The Document Layer

Reducto sells document processing to AI developers. Its October 2025 funding release said its total funding had reached $108M and that it was processing “close to a billion pages of data” for customers including Harvey, Rogo and Scale AI.

Office is free with limits, and the blog points teams that want editing inside their own products to Reducto Editor, an embeddable interface and SDK for the same three file types. As we read the post, the free plugin is the visible edge of a paid developer business.

It also adds to the week’s moves to put third-party tools inside the agent surface, from rival agents in Android Studio to one checkout tool for 5,026 stores and Google opening Gemini to apps.

The Structural Read

As we read the blog, Reducto positions the free plugin next to Reducto Editor, an embeddable interface and SDK for the same three file types aimed at teams building editing into their own products.

As we read the product page, the editor keeps the file open next to the conversation, so a person and ChatGPT can edit the same file at the same time and review redlines one by one.

By our arithmetic, the launch came 380 days after the Series B release of 14 October 2025, which put Reducto’s total funding at $108M.

Three Implications

FOR CHATGPT AND CODEX USERS Reducto says the plugin is free to use, with usage limits, and edits Word, Excel and PowerPoint files inside the chat.

FOR DOCUMENT SOFTWARE MAKERS Reducto’s blog names Reducto Editor, an embeddable interface and SDK for DOCX, PPTX and XLSX, for teams building editing into their own products.

FOR REDUCTO Its October 2025 release said it was processing close to a billion pages of data for customers including Harvey, Rogo and Scale AI.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Agentic Harness War.

The framework says “The surface, not the model, governs autonomy.”

As we read it, a plugin that lets ChatGPT edit the original Word, Excel and PowerPoint files is one case of the surface around the model deciding what an agent can do. The framework is the owner’s argument and does not discuss Reducto.

What Is Not Established

Reducto did not publish the usage limits, user numbers or pricing for heavier use in its announcement. The post does not say how edits are processed or stored. We have not tested the plugin, and the feature descriptions are Reducto’s own.
