OpenAI Plans 200 More Dublin Jobs and a New Applied AI Lab

OpenAI announced on 12 October 2026 that it will create 200 additional jobs in Ireland, including roles to support a new Applied AI Lab at its EU headquarters, according to a release from IDA Ireland, which is supporting the investment.

IDA Ireland says the 200 roles add to the 250 announced in July 2026, bringing OpenAI’s total commitment to at least 450 new roles locally. OpenAI currently employs over 120 people in Ireland.

Business Pill · FORWARD DEPLOYED ENGINEER

A one-minute explainer of the forward deployed engineer: an engineer who works inside a customer to build and deploy software. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any organisation in this story.

The key insight: As we read it, the jobs are aimed at deployment as much as research: IDA Ireland says the Applied AI Lab’s technical roles include forward deployed engineers who work directly with customers to build and deploy AI applications.

What the Applied AI Lab Will Do

According to the release, technical roles within the Applied AI Lab will include forward deployed engineers, who work directly with customers to build and deploy AI applications, as well as solutions and privacy engineers.

IDA Ireland says hiring also spans all other functions, from GTM (sales) to User Operations, and that the investment will help European businesses deploy advanced AI solutions.

The new roles will be based at OpenAI’s new EU headquarters at Tropical Fruit Warehouse, which the release says the company will occupy from December 2026.

OpenAI’s Irish roles, from IDA Ireland’s release of 12 October 2026: 250 roles announced in July 2026 and 200 more announced on 12 October, a total commitment of at least 450 new roles, against a current headcount of over 120 people in Ireland.

Who Said What

Taoiseach Micheรกl Martin joined OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar and IDA Ireland CEO Michael Lohan to mark the investment. Martin called it “a vote of confidence in the strength of our people, economy and ecosystem”, noting that Ireland is hosting the International AI Summit this week as part of its EU Presidency.

Friar said: “Since we opened our EU headquarters in Dublin three years ago, Ireland has been critical to our success in Europe.” Lohan said OpenAI’s plan “highlights the strength of Ireland’s technical talent and business environment.”

The Programmes Around the Jobs

The release says OpenAI will extend its ‘OpenAI for Ireland’ programme for start-ups, SMEs and builders. It says a new ‘Founder Cafe’ initiative with Dogpatch Labs will see some 150 high-potential founders get advanced AI skills training in ChatGPT, Codex and API.

OpenAI will also continue its SME Academy events across Ireland, starting in Cork in November 2026, and its support of the Patch programme for young builders aged 16 to 21, according to IDA Ireland.

The emphasis on deployment roles echoes other enterprise moves this month, such as HCLTech’s new Anthropic Business Unit to deploy Claude.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the location carries the European pitch: IDA Ireland says the investment will help European businesses deploy advanced AI solutions, and the roles will sit at OpenAI’s new EU headquarters.

As we read it, the commitment is now larger than the current team: the release says the total commitment is now at least 450 new roles, against over 120 people OpenAI currently employs in Ireland.

As we read it, the programmes widen the funnel beyond large customers: the release lists the Founder Cafe with Dogpatch Labs, SME Academy events and the Patch programme for young builders.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework Enterprise AI: From Software to Substrate.

The framework puts it this way: “Enterprise vendors don’t sell software anymore—they sell irreversibility. The product is the interconnection.”

As we read it, forward deployed engineers are how that interconnection gets built: IDA Ireland says they work directly with customers to build and deploy AI applications.

What Is Not Established

The IDA Ireland release we read does not say when the 200 roles are to be filled, how many sit in the Applied AI Lab rather than other functions, or a monetary value for the investment. The figures are commitments announced by OpenAI and IDA Ireland, not roles already filled, and the release does not say how many of the 250 roles announced in July have been hired.

A note on sourcing. On 12 October 2026 we read IDA Ireland’s release on OpenAI’s Irish jobs in full. We did not read an OpenAI blog post on the announcement or contact the company. The job numbers are announced commitments, not roles filled. Nothing here is investment advice.
