SB Energy, the SoftBank-owned developer building a data center campus in Ohio that OpenAI is set to lease, is considering pushing its initial public offering back to December or into next year, The Information reported on 22 October 2026. The company had aimed to list as early as September, according to the report.
SB Energy’s own prospectus puts its data center backlog at about $430 billion, against total revenue of $138.7 million in the first half of 2026. By our arithmetic, the backlog is about 3,100 times that half-year revenue. In plain words, backlog is the revenue a company expects from contracts it has already signed; most of SB Energy’s depends on sites that are not yet built.
Business Pill · BACKLOG
A short Business Engineer explainer on backlog: revenue that is signed but not yet earned. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about SB Energy.
The key insight: As we read it, the new number is the gap inside SB Energy’s own prospectus: about $430 billion of data center backlog against $138.7 million of first-half revenue, about 3,100 times by our arithmetic, with most of that backlog tied to an Ohio campus that is not yet under construction.
What The Information Reported
- The timing. SB Energy is weighing a delay of its IPO to December of this year or to next year, The Information reported, according to Seoul Economic Daily’s account of the report. The outlet had reported in August that the company was aiming to list as early as September.
- The valuation. Investment banks have put SB Energy’s valuation at about $60 billion, and IPO investors have signaled that figure is hard to accept because it rests on projected future revenue while none of the data centers are yet operating, The Information said, as reported by Seoul Economic Daily.
- The test case. Citing a person familiar with the matter, The Information said SB Energy executives are watching Anthropic’s IPO, expected next month, according to Seoul Economic Daily. Finimize, summarising The Information, wrote that SB Energy “is looking to Anthropic, an AI startup expected to go public in November, as a real-time test of appetite.”
- What we read. The Information’s article is paywalled and we did not read it; the lines above come from Seoul Economic Daily and Finimize, which summarise it.

What the Prospectus Shows
SB Energy’s amended prospectus, filed on 21 September 2026, says that across 8.8 GW-IT of data center campuses with leases signed and its power assets, “we have approximately $439 billion of backlog, comprising approximately $430 billion of DC segment backlog and approximately $10 billion of SP backlog.” It adds that the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Pike County, Ohio, makes up “a substantial majority” of the data center backlog and is not yet under construction.

Sources as listed. The S-1/A is SB Energy’s amended IPO prospectus filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on 21 September 2026; it leaves the price range blank. By our arithmetic, the $430 billion data center backlog is about 3,100 times the $138.7 million of total revenue reported for the first half of 2026.
For the first half of 2026, the filing reports total revenue of $138.7 million, including $58.7 million from contracts with customers and $67.4 million of unrealized change in the fair value of power price swaps, and a net loss attributable to SB Energy of $3,208.9 million. That loss includes a $2,573.1 million non-cash expense from the change in fair value of its warrant liability, according to the prospectus.
The filing also says Nvidia has provided residual value guaranties on the OpenAI tenant’s lease at PORTS-Pike covering the initial approximately 4.25 GW-IT, at an aggregate guaranteed value of $105 billion, and that Nvidia has committed to buy $1.5 billion of non-voting Class N stock in a private placement at the IPO price.
Connecting the Coverage
Our Nvidia guarantees piece reported, citing a report, that Nvidia backs up to $164.5 billion of AI data centers, and that the guarantee for SB Energy’s Ohio data center accounts for up to $105 billion of it. What’s new: the IPO that would fund that campus may slip.
Our Solidigm piece reported that SK hynix said on 23 October 2026 that its US unit Solidigm stopped reviewing both a pre-IPO round and an IPO. Our DayOne piece reported that DayOne was weighing a delay or a smaller US listing of $2.5 billion to $3 billion, according to Bloomberg on 21 October. Our Elice piece reported that the Korean neocloud’s shares fell as much as 32% on their Kosdaq debut on 20 October, according to Bloomberg.
Our selloff piece reported that the Nasdaq fell 2.6% on 22 October 2026, according to Reuters, the day The Information’s report appeared.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the IPO question is a timing question about the backlog: the prospectus says PORTS-Pike makes up a substantial majority of the data center backlog and is not yet under construction, so most of the $430 billion is revenue the company expects from a campus still to be built.
As we read it, the backstop is Nvidia: the filing describes residual value guaranties of $105 billion on the initial approximately 4.25 GW-IT of the OpenAI tenant’s lease, plus a $1.5 billion private placement at the IPO price.
As we read it, the listing window is the variable: The Information reported, per Seoul Economic Daily, that SB Energy is watching Anthropic’s IPO expected next month, and our recent pieces show Solidigm halting its US IPO review and DayOne weighing a smaller listing.
SB Energy, amended IPO prospectus, 21 September 2026
“we have approximately $439 billion of backlog, comprising approximately $430 billion of DC segment backlog and approximately $10 billion of SP backlog”
Three Implications
FOR IPO INVESTORS The Information reported, per Seoul Economic Daily, that investors balked because the roughly $60 billion valuation rests on projected revenue while none of the data centers are yet operating.
FOR OPENAI The prospectus describes OpenAI as the tenant of the PORTS-Pike campus, which makes up a substantial majority of SB Energy’s data center backlog.
FOR NVIDIA The filing describes $105 billion of Nvidia residual value guaranties on the initial approximately 4.25 GW-IT of that lease and a $1.5 billion Nvidia private placement at the IPO price.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map.
The framework argues that “the $1T capex cycle is being underwritten by a $1T concentrated demand commitment from two counterparties whose combined free cash flow is deeply negative.”
As we read it, SB Energy’s prospectus is one place that commitment shows up as a single number: a data center backlog of about $430 billion, most of it tied to an OpenAI-leased campus. The framework was published in May 2026 and does not discuss SB Energy.
What Is Not Established
SB Energy has not set an IPO date in what we could read, and the prospectus leaves the price range blank. The $60 billion valuation and the $5 billion to $7 billion target come from The Information as relayed by Seoul Economic Daily, not from the company. We did not read The Information’s article, and we did not contact SB Energy, SoftBank or OpenAI. Nothing here is investment advice.
The Bottom Line
SB Energy is weighing an IPO delay to December or next year, The Information reported, while its own prospectus shows about $430 billion of data center backlog against $138.7 million of first-half revenue.

A note on sourcing. This piece is based on SB Energy’s amended IPO prospectus filed with the SEC on 21 September 2026, on Seoul Economic Daily’s and Finimize’s accounts of The Information’s 22 October 2026 report, which we did not read, and on our own earlier pieces. The backlog-to-revenue ratio is our arithmetic. We did not contact SB Energy, SoftBank or OpenAI. Nothing here is investment advice.
