Murata Manufacturing plans to invest “a total of approximately 1 trillion yen over five years, from fiscal 2026 to fiscal 2030, to expand MLCC production capacity”, the Japanese component maker said on 30 October. By our arithmetic, that is about 1.9 times the 520 billion yen of operating profit Murata now forecasts for the year to March 2027.
MLCCs, or multilayer ceramic capacitors, are tiny parts that store and release electricity on circuit boards. Murata said it expects “MLCC sales in fiscal 2030 will reach at least 2 times those in fiscal 2025”. Bloomberg reported the plan under the headline “Murata Boosts MLCC Output Investment to Keep Pace With AI Demand”.

Business Pill · Lead Time
A short explainer on lead time: why the wait is part of the price. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this piece.
The key insight: By our arithmetic, Murata’s plan of about 1 trillion yen for MLCC capacity is about 1.9 times the 520 billion yen of operating profit it forecasts for this year, and it averages about 200 billion yen a year, about three-quarters of the 270 billion yen of capital spending Murata plans this year.
What Murata Announced
Of the total, Murata said “investment in buildings will be roughly 350 billion yen, and investment in production equipment about 650 billion yen”. The plan includes new production buildings at existing sites in and outside Japan, more equipment, higher capacity on existing equipment and some land.
In Japan, the release names new production facilities at Setouchi in Okayama Prefecture and at Yasugi in Shimane Prefecture. It lists the Okayama buildings at a “Total of approx. 150 billion yen”, with construction work starting in April 2027, and says the Okayama site aims to “build a workforce of 1,500 to 2,000 people by 2030”. Murata also named sites in the Philippines and Thailand.
The release ties the plan to AI. Murata says it will meet “growing data center demand while also looking ahead to a future in which AI is deployed across diverse fields, including edge devices, mobility, and robotics”.

The Results Behind It
Murata’s results for the six months to September show revenue of 1,090.8 billion yen, up 20.8%, and operating profit of 245.9 billion yen, up 48.9%. The results release says MLCC revenue “increased across a wide range of applications, mainly for data centers, distributors and mobility”.
Capacitors, the category that includes MLCCs, brought in 605.6 billion yen, up 33.1%. By our arithmetic, that is 55.5% of Murata’s revenue, against 50.4% a year earlier.
Murata raised its full-year forecast. Revenue is now 2,260 billion yen, from 2,110 billion yen in July, and operating profit 520 billion yen, from 430 billion yen. It lifted planned capital spending to 270 billion yen from 255 billion yen; its presentation says that rise is “mainly for device and module products”.
How Big Is 1 Trillion Yen
By our arithmetic, the plan averages about 200 billion yen a year, about three-quarters of the 270 billion yen of capital spending Murata plans this year. At the 159.37 yen per dollar Murata averaged in the first half, 1 trillion yen is about $6.3 billion.
On 29 October, Ibiden approved about 151 billion yen for AI server substrates, as we reported; by our arithmetic, Murata’s plan is about 6.6 times that, though the two buy different things. Our packaging bottleneck piece covers the substrate side.
Why Capacitors Matter for AI
On 26 October we reported that some Samsung Electro-Mechanics capacitors carried a 61-week standard lead time at DigiKey, against 17 weeks for Murata and 28 for Yageo by iM Securities’ comparison, as Newspim reported.
The Structural Read
As we read the release, most of the money goes into machines rather than walls: Murata puts about 650 billion yen into production equipment and roughly 350 billion yen into buildings.
By our arithmetic, capacitors were 55.5% of Murata’s first-half revenue, against 50.4% a year earlier, so the capacitor category, which includes MLCCs, is already more than half of revenue.
As we read the documents, the timing is long: the Okayama construction work starts in April 2027, and the sales goal Murata sets is for fiscal 2030.

Three Implications
FOR AI SERVER MAKERS Murata says it will meet growing data center demand, and its results release says MLCC revenue rose mainly for data centers, distributors and mobility.
FOR MURATA’S FINANCES Murata raised its operating profit forecast to 520 billion yen from 430 billion yen and its capital spending plan to 270 billion yen from 255 billion yen.
FOR RIVAL CAPACITOR MAKERS Our 26 October piece reported a 61-week standard lead time for some Samsung Electro-Mechanics capacitors at DigiKey, against 17 weeks for Murata by iM Securities’ comparison.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Nine Layers of AI.
The analysis puts it this way: “This entire ecosystem has been shaped by constraints, bottlenecks, chokepoints, and scarcity at every layer.”
As we read it, Murata’s plan is a supplier adding capacity at one of those layers: its release ties the investment to data center demand and to AI in edge devices, mobility and robotics. The analysis does not discuss Murata or its October 2026 plans.
What Is Not Established
Murata’s release does not give a year-by-year schedule for the 1 trillion yen, its fiscal 2025 MLCC sales, or amounts for the Thailand, Philippines and Yasugi projects, which it says will be announced later. The 2030 sales goal is Murata’s plan. The comparisons with profit, capital spending, dollars and Ibiden are our arithmetic.
The Bottom Line
Murata plans about 1 trillion yen of MLCC investment over five years, about 1.9 times its forecast operating profit for this year, by our arithmetic, after capacitor revenue rose 33.1% in the first half, mainly for data centers, distributors and mobility, according to its results release. It expects MLCC sales in fiscal 2030 to be at least double fiscal 2025.
What happened next (30 Oct): Samsung Electro-Mechanics filed an 879.3 billion won ($658 million) MLCC supply contract with a large global company on DART, for deliveries from 21 December 2026 to 21 December 2027, equal to 7.8% of its 2025 revenue.
