Foxconn Says OpenAI Deal in Works, Sees Double-Digit 2027

Foxconn chairman Young Liu told reporters on 30 October 2026 that he had met OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman earlier in the day and that a collaboration was in the works, with an announcement once details were confirmed, Reuters reports. Liu gave no details, said the industry was not in a bubble, and said Foxconn expects to maintain double-digit growth in 2027.

Foxconn’s cloud and networking products segment, which includes AI servers, was 51% of second-quarter revenue, the company said in August, according to Reuters. Applied to the NT$2.53 trillion of revenue in Foxconn’s Q2 release, that is roughly NT$1.29 trillion, by our arithmetic.

Business Pill · Concentration

A short Business Engineer explainer on concentration: when a few big pieces make the total. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about Foxconn’s figures in this piece.

The key insight: As we read Reuters’ report, the news is a promise rather than a deal: Liu met Altman and said a collaboration is coming, while Foxconn’s own numbers show cloud and networking at 51% of second-quarter revenue.

What Liu Said

Liu spoke at the company’s annual event to showcase its technology, in Taipei, Reuters reports. It says “Any deal would build upon the agreement between the two firms in 2025 to work together on designing and engineering data-centre racks, components and other AI hardware.”

Reuters also reports that Foxconn has six factory buildings in Houston, Texas, where it makes AI servers for Nvidia, and that Liu sees a need for further expansion. Reuters calls Foxconn Nvidia’s biggest AI server maker.

Foxconn quarterly revenue, NT$ trillion: Q1 2026 2.12 (first half NT$4.65T minus Q2, our arithmetic), Q2 2.53 (Foxconn Q2 release), Q3 3.03 (Reuters, 5 Oct 2026). Q3 is about 19.8% above Q2, our arithmetic. Cloud and networking was 51% of Q2 revenue, per Reuters.

What Was Posted on X

Bloomberg posted on 30 October that Hon Hai chairman Young Liu says AI demand “is real” and a “good problem”, quoting him: “This is not fake demand, this is not imaginary demand.” Bloomberg adds that Foxconn aims to capture half the AI server market within two years.

What Foxconn’s Numbers Show

Foxconn’s release put second-quarter revenue at NT$2.53 trillion, up 41% on the year, with an operating margin of 3.75%. First-half revenue was NT$4.65 trillion, which leaves NT$2.12 trillion for the first quarter, by our arithmetic.

On 5 October Foxconn reported third-quarter revenue of NT$3.03 trillion, up 47%, as we reported from Reuters. That is about 19.8% above the second quarter, by our arithmetic. In its Q2 release, rotating chief executive Michael Chiang said Vera Rubin racks would enter mass production in the third quarter.

Why It Matters for the AI Build-Out

Reuters links Liu’s comments to a market in which AI-sector stocks “have been hit hard by concerns that relentless heavy investment is not sustainable amid climbing borrowing costs”. For Taiwan’s economy, see our piece on Taiwan’s third-quarter GDP; for where AI chips end up, see Epoch AI’s compute shares by country and Nvidia’s Taiwan billing.

The Structural Read

By our arithmetic, Foxconn’s revenue went from NT$2.12 trillion in the first quarter to NT$2.53 trillion in the second and NT$3.03 trillion in the third, about 19.8% between the last two.

By our arithmetic, the second-quarter operating margin of 3.75% in Foxconn’s release is about NT$3.75 of operating profit per NT$100 of revenue in that quarter.

As we read it, any OpenAI deal would add to an existing relationship: Reuters says it would build on the 2025 agreement covering data-centre racks, components and other AI hardware.

Three Implications

FOR OPENAI Reuters reports Liu met Altman on 30 October and said there would be an announcement once details were confirmed.

FOR FOXCONN Reuters says the cloud and networking segment, which includes AI servers, was 51% of second-quarter revenue.

FOR HOUSTON Reuters reports Foxconn has six factory buildings in Houston making AI servers for Nvidia, and that Liu sees a need for further expansion.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework AI’s Geopolitical Chokepoint.

The analysis opens: “The digital economy rests on a physical foundation that most people in that economy never see.”

As we read it, Foxconn is part of that foundation: Reuters says it makes AI servers for Nvidia, and that its cloud and networking segment, which includes AI servers, was 51% of second-quarter revenue. The analysis does not discuss Foxconn or OpenAI.

What Is Not Established

Reuters gives no details of what the new collaboration covers, what it is worth or when it will be announced; it reports that Liu met Altman and that there would be an announcement once details were confirmed.

The 51% share is a rounded figure from Reuters, so the NT$1.29 trillion is an approximation. The third-quarter figure is revenue, not profit.

The Bottom Line

Foxconn says a new OpenAI collaboration is in the works, without details, and expects double-digit growth in 2027, Reuters reports. Its cloud and networking segment was 51% of second-quarter revenue, roughly NT$1.29 trillion, and third-quarter revenue of NT$3.03 trillion was about 19.8% above the second quarter, by our arithmetic.

A note on sourcing. Liu’s remarks are Reuters’ reporting, read through its Straits Times and Economic Times syndications. Second-quarter and first-half figures are from Foxconn’s Q2 release; third-quarter revenue is Reuters’ account, as in our 5 October piece. NT$2.12 trillion, NT$1.29 trillion and 19.8% are our arithmetic.
