OpenAI said in its ChatGPT release notes on 20 October 2026 that it is adding locked chats, which “let you keep selected conversations in your account while hiding them from regular chat history, pinned chats, and search.” Users open them “with your 4-digit account PIN or supported device authentication,” and the feature is “rolling out gradually to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users” on the web, in the iOS and Android apps and in the new desktop app.
The company’s Help Center page sets out what the lock does not change. It does not “create end-to-end encryption or a separate encrypted vault,” and it does not “change how long OpenAI retains the chat.” OpenAI frames the use case plainly: the feature “can help keep sensitive conversations out of view when you share your screen or use a shared device.”
Business Pill · AGENT MEMORY
A short explainer on agent memory: how an AI assistant remembers you between chats. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this story.
The key insight: As we read it, OpenAI’s locked chats change who can see a ChatGPT conversation, not how it is stored: the Help Center says the lock does not add end-to-end encryption or change retention, and resetting the PIN deletes the locked chats.
How Locked Chats Work
A user locks a conversation from a chat’s more options menu, according to OpenAI. The chat then moves to a separate area. “You can find your locked chats under Projects > Locked chats,” the Help Center says, and once a chat is locked, “its title and content are removed from regular chat history and regular conversation search.”
- The PIN. “Opening locked chats requires a 4-digit account PIN,” OpenAI says. On supported phones, people can also use Face ID, Touch ID or their device unlock method.
- One PIN per account. “Your account PIN is tied to your OpenAI account, not to a specific workspace,” the page says, and the same PIN works across devices signed in to that account.
- Short sessions. On iOS and Android, “access ends automatically after 1 minute away from a locked chat or the Locked chats area, or after 1 minute in the background.” On the web, access also ends when the page is refreshed or the tab is closed, according to OpenAI.
- Files go with the chat. “Files uploaded or created in a chat are protected when you lock it,” the Help Center says.

What the Lock Does Not Do
OpenAI lists the limits in one place. Besides encryption and retention, locking a chat does not “change your Improve the model for everyone setting,” does not “remove information that ChatGPT remembered before you locked the chat,” and does not “override applicable workspace policies, safety requirements, or legal and compliance obligations.”
The page also carries a hard warning about the PIN. “Resetting your account PIN permanently deletes all locked chats,” OpenAI says, along with remembered information stored only within locked chats and files protected only by the previous PIN. “This cannot be undone, and OpenAI Support cannot recover the deleted content.” Changing a PIN, by contrast, does not delete locked chats.
For companies, the Help Center adds: “A workspace administrator cannot reset your account PIN or unlock your chats for you.”
Who Gets It
The release notes name Free, Go, Plus and Pro. The Help Center lists a wider set: “Locked chats are available on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu.” By our count, that is seven plans. The page adds that “Locked chats are not available on ChatGPT for Healthcare,” and that “Codex conversations, including cloud Codex conversations, and local Work conversations can’t be locked.”
OpenAI calls the rollout gradual and gives no completion date. It did not give a user figure in either document we read.
What It Means for AI Assistants
As we read it, locked chats are a product decision rather than a model one: the same conversations, filed in a different place and opened by a different key. OpenAI’s own description puts the value in everyday situations, a shared screen or a shared device, where a person’s chat history is visible to someone else.
As we read it, the list of what the lock does not do matters as much as the feature. OpenAI separates hiding a chat from changing how it is stored or used: retention and the model-improvement setting stay as they were. That leaves the trust question with the existing settings, and it puts the cost of a forgotten PIN on the user, since a reset deletes the locked chats.
An earlier entry in the same release notes, dated 4 June 2026, said Lockdown Mode, “an optional opt-in advanced security setting,” was available to all logged-in users. As we read it, locked chats address a different exposure from Lockdown Mode: who can see a conversation, not where data can flow.
Connecting the Coverage
Our piece on Meta pausing Muse sharing reported on 20 October that the security firm Claroc found more than 6,800 Muse share links through public DNS records, including a loan application and a revenue review, after which Meta paused sharing from Muse. What’s new, as we read it: a rival assistant is adding a control over who can see a chat, rather than over who can open a link to it.
Our report on Muse downloads cited Sensor Tower data, reported by TechCrunch, showing 10.2 million US downloads for Muse in its first 40 days, against 3.7 million for ChatGPT over its own first 40 days. Our piece on Amazon and JPMorgan barring Muse tracked where Meta’s agent has been let in and kept out. And our count of Meta’s AI trust week found five dated trust events in eight days. As we read it, privacy controls are now part of how these assistants compete, alongside downloads.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the feature is a product-layer change: the same conversations are filed under Projects > Locked chats and opened with “a 4-digit account PIN,” with Face ID, Touch ID or device unlock as options on supported phones.
As we read it, OpenAI’s list of what the lock does not do separates visibility from storage: it does not “change how long OpenAI retains the chat” or the model-improvement setting, so those decisions stay with the existing controls.
As we read it, the reset rule moves risk to the user: “Resetting your account PIN permanently deletes all locked chats,” and OpenAI says a workspace administrator cannot reset the PIN or unlock the chats.

“This can help keep sensitive conversations out of view when you share your screen or use a shared device.”
Three Implications
SHARED SCREENS AND DEVICES OpenAI says locked chats can help keep sensitive conversations “out of view when you share your screen or use a shared device.”
WORKSPACES OpenAI says the lock does not “override applicable workspace policies, safety requirements, or legal and compliance obligations.”
FORGOTTEN PINS OpenAI says a PIN reset “cannot be undone, and OpenAI Support cannot recover the deleted content.”
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Product Overhang Doctrine.
The framework opens with two curves: “The first is what your underlying technology can do. The second is what your users can actually do with it.”
As we read it, locked chats sit on the second curve: OpenAI changed where conversations appear and how they are opened, not what the model can do. The framework was published in June 2026 and does not discuss this feature.
What Is Not Established
This piece rests on OpenAI’s release notes and Help Center page, both read on 21 October 2026. We did not test the feature. OpenAI gives no number of users who will receive it and no date for the end of the rollout. The help page says only that the feature may not be available for every account yet.
The Bottom Line
OpenAI said on 20 October 2026 that ChatGPT is rolling out locked chats, opened with a 4-digit account PIN or device authentication and hidden from regular history, pinned chats and search. Its Help Center lists the feature on Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. The lock does not add end-to-end encryption or change retention, and resetting the PIN deletes the locked chats. As we read it, the feature gives users more control over who sees a conversation, while how it is stored stays under the existing settings.

A note on sourcing. This piece is built on OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes and its Help Center page on locked chats, both read in full on 21 October 2026, and on our own earlier coverage, which cites its sources. The plan count is our count. We did not test the feature or contact OpenAI. Nothing here is legal, financial or investment advice.
