ByteDance job postings on the recruitment site Boss Zhipin offer monthly salaries from 35,000 to 65,000 yuan for forward-deployed engineers (FDEs), The News reported on 25 October 2026. One ByteDance AI job lists 975,000 yuan a year: 65,000 yuan a month, paid 15 times.
Job postings for FDEs rose 1,523% in the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period of 2025, according to the professional networking platform Maimai, as cited by The News. The South China Morning Post ran the story under the headline “China’s tech giants are paying 1 million yuan for a new kind of AI engineer”, according to a screenshot attached to an X post by Choblin (@choblin29).
Business Engineer · THE FDE PLAYBOOK
A 15-minute Business Engineer course on forward-deployed engineering. It teaches the general role only and says nothing about any company in this story.
The key insight: As we read it, the advertised ranges put a price on the step between an AI model and a working deployment: ByteDance postings offer up to 65,000 yuan a month for forward-deployed engineers, while Maimai counts FDE postings up 1,523% in the first seven months of 2026, according to The News. The News also says these are advertisements and that most such jobs pay much less.
What the Postings Offer
The News listed the advertised monthly ranges by company. ByteDance’s postings on Boss Zhipin run from 35,000 to 65,000 yuan. Ant Digital Technologies, the technology division of Ant Group, offers 40,000 to 60,000 yuan for jobs requiring business-facing skills. Tencent’s FDE-related jobs pay 30,000 to 60,000 yuan, and Alibaba Cloud’s deployment engineering jobs pay 50,000 yuan a month.
The 975,000 yuan figure is more than 22 times China’s average annual disposable income of 43,377 yuan in 2025, The News wrote. It also cautioned: “These are just advertisements and not common salaries offered by companies in China.” It said the majority of the positions pay much lower salaries, citing George Wang, an HR expert at an AI company in Beijing.

Choblin (@choblin29) posted this on 25 October 2026, citing the South China Morning Post, with a screenshot of the SCMP headline. It gives the Kimi, Doubao and per-day figures; the piece attributes those to the post and checks the salary ranges and the 1,523% figure against The News.
What the Job Is
The News described the role this way: “These engineers work directly with customers to build AI applications and fit them into business operations.” It quoted a Beijing engineer who goes by Su, who once led an internal FDE team at a major Chinese internet company, as saying the job needs people who quickly grasp clients’ needs across industries, pick the right AI tools and carry a solution through to implementation.
The same report said that what companies actually need are AI-native full-stack developers with experience in creating AI agents.
Beijing and the Platforms Are Pushing It
In late August, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology urged firms to place FDE teams at customer sites and told universities to train more of them, The News reported. Tencent Cloud introduced what it calls the industry’s first FDE certification this year, aimed at partner engineers using its Agent Development Platform.
The News added that US firms are moving the same way, writing that Anthropic has announced a US$100 million initiative to train 10,000 FDEs by the end of 2027.

Choblin’s post, citing the SCMP, said ByteDance, Tencent and Alibaba are offering nearly 1 million yuan ($150,000) a year, that Kimi has advertised annual packages of 1.09 million yuan ($163,000) and ByteDance’s Doubao 1.05 million yuan ($157,000), and that some ByteDance engineers could reportedly earn up to 10,000 yuan ($1,500) a day working at customer companies. We read the SCMP headline and standfirst in the screenshot, not the full article, so those package figures rest on the post.
Where It Meets Our Coverage
Our AWS piece covered the US version of the same bet on engineers who deploy AI inside client companies. Our FDE explainer describes the role in more detail.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the pay is set by scarcity of a mixed skill: The News describes engineers who “work directly with customers to build AI applications and fit them into business operations.”
As we read it, Beijing is treating the role as policy, not just hiring: The News reports the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology urged firms to place FDE teams at customer sites and told universities to train more of them.
As we read it, the platforms are building a channel around it: The News reports Tencent Cloud introduced an FDE certification for partner engineers using its Agent Development Platform.
The News, 25 October 2026
“These are just advertisements and not common salaries offered by companies in China.”
Three Implications
FOR AI VENDORS The News reports ByteDance, Ant Digital Technologies, Tencent and Alibaba Cloud all advertise FDE or deployment roles, with tops of range from 50,000 to 65,000 yuan a month.
FOR ENTERPRISE BUYERS The News reports the MIIT asked firms to station FDE teams at customer sites, which puts vendor engineers inside client operations.
FOR ENGINEERS The News cites George Wang as saying the majority of positions pay much lower salaries, and that companies need AI-native full-stack developers with experience creating AI agents.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework Forward-Deployed Engineering.
The framework puts it this way: the rise of forward-deployed engineering shows that “technical capability has far outpaced organizational readiness.”
As we read it, China’s advertised FDE pay is a price on that readiness gap. The framework was published in November 2025 and does not discuss these postings.
What Is Not Established
The salary ranges are advertised figures as reported by The News; The News itself says most positions pay much lower salaries. We did not read the Boss Zhipin postings or the Maimai report directly. The Kimi, Doubao and per-day figures come from Choblin’s post, which cites the SCMP; we did not read the SCMP article beyond its headline and standfirst. We did not contact ByteDance, Tencent, Alibaba, Ant Group or Moonshot AI.
The Bottom Line
ByteDance postings on Boss Zhipin offer forward-deployed engineers 35,000 to 65,000 yuan a month, and Maimai counts FDE postings up 1,523% in the first seven months of 2026, according to The News. The same report says these are advertised figures and that most such jobs pay much less.

A note on sourcing. Salary ranges, the Maimai figure, the MIIT and Tencent Cloud details and the Anthropic line are as reported by The News on 25 October 2026. The SCMP headline is read from a screenshot attached to Choblin’s X post; the Kimi, Doubao and per-day figures are as stated in that post. We did not contact the companies named.
