AMSC (American Superconductor Corporation), which sells power control systems for grids and wind turbines, said on 4 November that it expects revenue for the quarter ending 31 December 2026 to exceed $80.0 million. That floor is about 15% below the $94.0 million it reported for the quarter to 30 September, by our arithmetic, according to its results release filed with the SEC after the close.
Second-quarter revenue of its fiscal 2026 rose about 43% from $65.9 million a year earlier. Non-GAAP net income was $9.1 million, or $0.20 per basic share ($0.19 diluted); GAAP net income fell to $3.0 million from $4.8 million.
Business Pill · Backlog
An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on backlog, orders signed but not yet delivered. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss AMSC.

The key insight: AMSC guided revenue for the quarter ending 31 December 2026 to more than $80.0 million, about 15% below the $94.0 million it reported for the quarter to 30 September, by our arithmetic; Comtrafo, acquired in December 2025, contributed $18.5 million of that quarter, about two-thirds of the year-over-year increase.
Where the 43% Came From
The 10-Q filed the same evening says Comtrafo, the Brazilian transformer maker it acquired on 5 December 2025, contributed $18.5 million of revenue and $2.6 million of net income in the quarter. Without that contribution, revenue was about $75.5 million, up about 15% from a year earlier, by our arithmetic. Comtrafo accounts for about two-thirds of the $28.2 million year-over-year increase.
The release puts it the same way: the increase “was driven by organic growth and the acquisition of Comtrafo”. Gross margin fell to 28% from 31%, which the 10-Q attributes to “a less favorable product mix and the impact of Comtrafo purchase accounting items”.

What Was Posted on X
Wall St Engine’s earnings card for AMSC’s fiscal second quarter of 2026, posted on 4 November. It lists revenue of $94.0 million, up 43%, and third-quarter revenue guidance above $80.0 million against a $91.1 million estimate. The piece checks each company figure against AMSC’s filed release and 10-Q.
The Guide and the $90 Million Average
Chief executive Daniel McGahn said in the release: “Looking forward, we expect revenue to average approximately $90 million for each of our first three quarters”. The first two quarters brought in $188.1 million. Three quarters at about $90 million would total about $270 million, which leaves about $82 million for the third quarter, by our arithmetic, close to the formal floor of more than $80.0 million.
He also said the company saw “continued customer-requested accelerations in project deliveries through the first half of our fiscal year”. Wall St Engine’s earnings card put the consensus for third-quarter revenue at $91.1 million; the floor is about 12% below it, by our arithmetic. The company guided non-GAAP net income above $7.0 million, or $0.15 per share.
Grid, Wind and Orders
Grid revenue rose 41% to $76.7 million and was 82% of the total; Wind rose 51% to $17.4 million on “additional shipments of electrical control systems”, the 10-Q says. The 10-Q adds that the Grid increase “was driven by the addition of Comtrafo revenues along with organic revenue growth”.
Orders exceeded $95 million, “driven primarily by traditional and renewable energy as well as demand from materials and utility customers”, McGahn said. The release and the 10-Q we read do not name data centres or artificial intelligence as a source of demand. The 10-Q lists about $319.5 million of performance obligations to be recognised in the next twelve months.
Operating cash flow “More Than Quadrupled” to $33 million in the quarter, according to the release’s highlights, and reached $48.7 million for the six months against $10.6 million a year earlier. Cash and restricted cash stood at $181.9 million on 30 September.
What the Risk Factors Say
The 10-Q states: “There have been no material changes to the risk factors described in Part I, Item 1A of our Annual Report on Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026”.
Connecting the Coverage
Our grid and power-equipment coverage: Hinojosa wants data centers to pay costs, with the queue at 2.1x peak; power gear orders nearly double as 61% oppose data centers; and OpenAI’s Abilene builder Crusoe cuts its power-gear wait by 40%.
The Structural Read
As we read the release and the 10-Q, the 43% headline growth and the guide floor describe different things: about two-thirds of the growth came from an acquisition, and the chief executive tied the quarter to deliveries customers asked to accelerate.
As we read the order language, AMSC attributes demand to traditional and renewable energy, materials and utility customers; the filings we read do not name data centres.
AMSC fiscal Q2 2026 release, 4 November 2026
“Looking forward, we expect revenue to average approximately $90 million for each of our first three quarters.”
Three Implications
FOR THE THIRD QUARTER Three quarters averaging about $90 million imply about $82 million in the third quarter, by our arithmetic, against a formal floor of more than $80.0 million.
FOR GROWTH QUALITY Excluding Comtrafo’s $18.5 million, second-quarter revenue grew about 15%, by our arithmetic, and gross margin fell to 28% from 31%.
FOR THE PIPELINE The 10-Q lists about $319.5 million of performance obligations to be recognised in the next twelve months, and orders in the quarter exceeded $95 million, according to the release.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map & The State of AI Hyperscalers.
The framework argues that “the seven-layer AI stack is now governed from the bottom — energy, silicon, compute capacity.”
As we read it, AMSC sells into the energy layer, but its own release attributes this quarter’s orders to traditional and renewable energy, materials and utility customers, so the filings do not tie its growth to AI demand. The framework does not discuss AMSC.

What Is Not Established
The release does not split organic growth by segment or say how much of the second quarter came from deliveries pulled forward at customers’ request. It gives no full-year revenue figure. The $82 million third-quarter figure is our arithmetic on the chief executive’s average, not company guidance. We did not hear the call, scheduled for 10:00 a.m. ET on 5 November.
The Bottom Line
AMSC guided third-quarter revenue to more than $80.0 million, about 15% below the $94.0 million of its second quarter, by our arithmetic. The second quarter grew about 43%, and about two-thirds of that increase came from Comtrafo; without it, growth was about 15%, by our arithmetic.
