Alibaba Sold 100,000 AI Plans in 30 Minutes for About $150

Alibaba sold nearly 100,000 one-month subscriptions to its QwenWork AI assistant in 30 minutes on a Taobao live stream on 2 November, the South China Morning Post reported, citing data from Alibaba. The price on the stream was 0.01 yuan, cut from 28 yuan (US$4.21).

At that price, 100,000 passes bring in about 1,000 yuan, or about $150, by our arithmetic. At the 28-yuan list price the same passes would be 2.8 million yuan, about $421,000, also by our arithmetic, so the stream price is 99.96 per cent off list.

Business Pill · Distribution Advantage

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on distribution advantage. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Alibaba, QwenWork or the live stream.

The key insight: Alibaba sold nearly 100,000 QwenWork monthly passes in 30 minutes at 0.01 yuan each, according to its own data as reported by SCMP. By our arithmetic that is about 1,000 yuan, or about $150, against about $421,000 at the 28-yuan list price.

What Was Sold on the Live Stream

The host was Li Jiaqi, the live-streamer known as China’s “Lipstick King”. He was joined by Chen Yusen, a vice-president at Alibaba and chief executive of its QwenWork unit, SCMP and the Global Times reported on 3 November.

The Global Times wrote that the stream “sold 100,000 monthly personal membership cards for QwenWork, equivalent to about 2 trillion tokens”. It said the card “offers unlimited use in standard mode for office tasks such as document writing, data processing and making PowerPoint presentations”.

Chen told viewers: “Just as cars need fuel and household appliances need electricity, tokens are the fuel that powers AI”, according to SCMP. SCMP added that Li also sold Qwen-related hardware, including AI-powered laptops, voice recorders and desktop robots.

South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo carried the story on 4 November, citing SCMP. It reported that buyers also received 500 points for image and video generation.

Monthly AI plan prices in US dollars: ChatGPT Plus $20, Google AI Pro $19.99, ChatGPT Go $8, QwenWork’s
Monthly AI plan prices in US dollars: ChatGPT Plus $20, Google AI Pro $19.99, ChatGPT Go $8, QwenWork’s 28-yuan list price ($4.21) and the 0.01-yuan price on Li Jiaqi’s 2 November live stream (about $0.0015). Nearly 100,000 passes at 0.01 yuan come to about 1,000 yuan, about $150. Conversions and the $150 are our arithmetic, at SCMP’s 28 yuan = $4.21. Data: QwenWork prices and sales are Alibaba figures as reported by SCMP (owned by Alibaba) and the Global Times, 3 Nov 2026; US list prices from the vendors’ pricing pages, 4 Nov 2026.

The Price Against Other AI Plans

Monthly AI plan prices: ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI and QwenWork
Monthly consumer AI plan prices in US dollars, billed monthly: Claude Pro $20, ChatGPT Plus $20, Google AI Pro $19.99, ChatGPT Go $8, Google AI Plus $4.99, QwenWork’s list price of 28 yuan ($4.21) and the 0.01-yuan live-stream price (about $0.0015). Conversions are our arithmetic at SCMP’s 28 yuan = $4.21; different markets, not purchasing-power adjusted. Data: vendors’ US pricing pages, 4 Nov 2026; QwenWork prices from Alibaba as reported by SCMP and the Global Times. Chart: FourWeekMBA.

At 28 yuan, QwenWork’s list price of $4.21 a month is about a fifth of the $20 that OpenAI charges for ChatGPT Plus in the United States, by our arithmetic. Google lists Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month and Google AI Pro at $19.99; OpenAI lists ChatGPT Go at $8.

Anthropic lists Claude Pro at $20 if billed monthly. The US prices are from each company’s pricing page on 4 November. They are for a different market and are not adjusted for purchasing power.

In August, SCMP reported that Alibaba had launched paid tiers for its office assistant in the Qwen app, under the headline “Alibaba tests paid AI appetite with US$30 annual office-assistant subscription”.

The Token Count

Spread over 100,000 passes, the 2 trillion tokens cited by the Global Times are about 20 million tokens a pass, by our arithmetic. At the 28-yuan list price that is about 1.4 yuan, or about $0.21, per million tokens.

That token figure is an equivalence the Global Times attributes to the stream. The Global Times also describes the card as unlimited use in standard mode, and Chosun Ilbo says that applies during the promotional period.

Tokens on the Shelf for Singles’ Day

SCMP reported that Alibaba’s Tmall “debuted AI tokens as a stand-alone consumer category” for this year’s festival, and that at least six Chinese AI developers have joined its token marketplace, including Alibaba Cloud, Z.ai, Moonshot AI and DeepSeek.

According to data Alibaba sent to the Global Times, gross merchandise volume in Taobao’s token category on 20 October, the first day of early Double 11 sales, rose 450 per cent from a month earlier.

The Global Times also reported that sales of AI token subscription products rose more than 160 per cent month on month after Zhipu opened an official flagship store on Tmall.

Connecting the Coverage

The same day we covered Menlo Ventures’ finding that the average open-source token fell to $0.13 per million in US enterprise use, in Open-Source Hits 19% of Tokens at $0.13; Kimi, DeepSeek Lead. That is an enterprise survey figure, not a consumer price.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the stream priced a month of QwenWork at about 0.04 per cent of its list price, by our arithmetic; the reports do not say how many buyers will pay the 28-yuan price after the first month.

As we read the reports, tokens are being sold the way a phone top-up is sold: SCMP describes Tmall letting shoppers top up computing credits as easily as adding data to a mobile phone plan.

Three Implications

FOR ALIBABA’S REVENUE At 0.01 yuan, nearly 100,000 passes are about $150, by our arithmetic. The reports do not say how many buyers were new or will renew at 28 yuan.

FOR PRICING AGAINST US PLANS QwenWork’s 28-yuan list price is about $4.21, about a fifth of ChatGPT Plus at $20 and below Google AI Plus at $4.99, by our arithmetic from the pricing pages.

FOR THE TOKEN SHELF Alibaba told the Global Times that Taobao’s token category GMV rose 450 per cent month on month on 20 October; SCMP counts at least six developers on Tmall’s token marketplace.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Subsidized AGI Economy.

The framework puts it this way: “The negative margin is not a leak. It is a procurement budget.”

As we read it, a 0.01-yuan month of QwenWork is that idea at its limit: the price is close to zero, so what Alibaba gets from the stream is buyers and usage, not revenue. The framework was written about US subscription plans and does not discuss Alibaba or QwenWork.

What Is Not Established

The sales figures come from Alibaba, as reported by SCMP, which Alibaba owns, and by the Global Times. SCMP says “nearly 100,000”; the Global Times says 100,000. We have not seen an Alibaba statement of its own; a search of Alibaba’s Alizila news site on 4 November returned no post on the stream.

The reports do not give how many buyers were new to QwenWork, how many will renew at the list price after the first month, or what the passes cost Alibaba to serve.

A note on sourcing. The sales and price figures are Alibaba’s, as reported by the South China Morning Post, which Alibaba owns, and by the Global Times; Chosun Ilbo’s report cites SCMP. We have not verified them independently. US plan prices are from OpenAI’s, Anthropic’s and Google’s pricing pages on 4 November 2026.
