AAOI Guides Sales Up 49% as Power Delays Its US Expansion

Applied Optoelectronics, which makes optical transceivers for AI data centers, guided fourth-quarter revenue to $385 million to $420 million after reporting a record $269.9 million for the third quarter, the company said on 5 November. By our arithmetic, the $402.5 million midpoint is about 49% above the third quarter, which was itself 2.28 times the $118.6 million of a year earlier, a 128% rise.

Chief financial officer Stefan Murry said: “We expect our 2027 capacity expansion plan in the US to take longer to complete due to longer than expected time to obtain necessary electrical power among other construction related issues.”

Business Pill · Lead Time

A short Business Engineer explainer on lead time, the gap between an order and its delivery. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Applied Optoelectronics.

The key insight: Applied Optoelectronics guided fourth-quarter revenue to $385 million to $420 million, a midpoint about 49% above its record $269.9 million third quarter, by our arithmetic. Its CFO said getting electrical power is taking longer than expected and will slow its 2027 US capacity expansion.

What AOI Reported

  • Revenue of $269.9 million, against $191.9 million in the second quarter and $118.6 million a year earlier.
  • Datacenter revenue of $155.6 million, against $43.9 million a year earlier, and CATV revenue of $110.9 million, per the release’s tables; by our arithmetic datacenter was about 58% of the total.
  • GAAP gross margin of 28.2%; non-GAAP gross margin of 28.7%, down from 31.0% a year earlier.
  • GAAP net income of $6.3 million, a return to GAAP profitability; non-GAAP net income of $14.8 million, or $0.17 per diluted share.
  • Fourth-quarter guidance: revenue of $385 million to $420 million and non-GAAP gross margin of 29.5% to 31%.
  • A multi-year strategic agreement with a Tier 1 hyperscale datacenter customer, per CEO Thompson Lin.

Wall St Engine posted AOI’s results at 21:11 UTC on 5 November: revenue of $269.9 million against an estimate of $268 million, up 128%.

Capacity and Power

Murry said total manufacturing equipment capacity is “approaching 330,000 units per month”, that the company expects equipment for over 500,000 pieces of 800G and 1.6 Tb products per month by the end of 2026, and that it expects to grow capacity “to over 1 million pieces of 800G and 1.6 Tb transceivers per month by the end of 2027.” Lin said demand for AI-related optical technologies is one “that we believe is accelerating.”

The Structural Read

As we read the release, AOI’s stated constraint is not demand but factory capacity, and its US expansion is waiting on power.

As we read the margins, GAAP gross margin edged up to 28.2% while non-GAAP gross margin fell to 28.7% from 31.0% a year earlier.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The State of AI Data Centers.

The framework says: “Companies that solve the power equation will dominate the AI era; those that donโ€™t will watch their chips sit idle.”

As we read it, AOI shows the power equation reaching the supply chain: its own US factory expansion waits on electricity. The framework itself does not discuss AOI.

What Is Not Established

The release does not name the Tier 1 hyperscale customer or give the agreement’s value, or give a product split within datacenter revenue. It does not quantify how long the US expansion will be delayed. The 49%, the 58% and the 2.28x are our arithmetic.
