Who is Richard Socher?

Richard Socher is an AI researcher, entrepreneur, and investor. He is well known for his work in natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, and deep learning and has authored several influential papers in the industry

Education and early career

Socher completed his Master of Science at Saarland University in his native Germany before moving to the United States. 

In 2007, he was part of a team at Princeton University that won first prize in the semantic robot vision challenge. Socher was also instrumental at Princeton in the development of ImageNet, a very large database of annotated images and a key pillar of subsequent computer vision research.

Socher received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2014 where he studied under AI pioneer Andrew Ng and also Chris Manning. Socher’s thesis focused on the development of new neural network models for NLP tasks such as question answering and sentiment analysis.

In July of that year, Socher founded MetaMind – an AI start-up and developer of a general-purpose platform to predict outcomes for vision, database, and language tasks.

MetaMind was later acquired by Salesforce in April 2016.

Salesforce

Post-acquisition, Socher served as a Chief Scientist and EVP at Salesforce. 

In this role, he led small teams that worked on fundamental and applied research, product incubation, customer service automation, CRM search, and a cross-product AI platform for structured and unstructured data.

This platform is now known as Einstein GPT, the world’s first generative AI for CRM.

Socher’s position at Salesforce enabled him to fuse his theoretical research with practical business applications. Over this time, he continued to co-teach the Stanford class Natural Language Processing with Deep Learning to just under 700 students.

You.com

After leaving Salesforce in 2018, Socher started You.com in 2020. Socher founded the company with Bryan McCann, a former colleague and NLP Research Scientist at Salesforce. 

You.com is a search engine that provides users with a more intuitive way to search for information based on conversational language, personalized apps, enhanced privacy, and AI-powered recommendations.

Other products include the AI writing tool YouWrite, the image-generation tool YouImagine, and YouCode, a platform for developers to find easy solutions to their coding problems.

Contributions to the field of AI

Socher has authored numerous critical papers in the field of AI and is a sought-after speaker at academic and industry conferences. His work on neural nets and NLP in particular have served as the foundation for much of what is driving the industry today.

In a February 2023 interview with VentureBeat, Socher explained that he was the “fourth most cited person in the entire field of AI natural language process”. He also noted his AI search engine was “the biggest application of natural language processing ever” that would disrupt Google’s stranglehold on paid and organic search. 

Over the years, Socher has received numerous awards for his work:

  • The Distinguished Application Paper Award at the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICMI) in 2011.
  • One of MIT Technology Review’s 35 Innovators Under 35 in 2015.
