Waymo Adds Nearly 250 Sq Mi of Robotaxi Service in 5 Cities

Waymo is adding nearly 250 square miles to its driverless ride-hailing service over the next week, the Alphabet company said in a blog post on 27 October 2026. The new ground is spread across five cities where it already operates: Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Electrek says that is about as big as Tesla’s entire Houston Robotaxi geofence after this week’s expansion.

Business Pill · Data flywheel explained

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on the data flywheel, when using a product makes it better. It explains the general idea and does not discuss Waymo or Tesla.

The key insight: As we read it, Waymo is now growing by widening the map inside cities it already serves: nearly 250 square miles across five of them in a week, without naming a new city.

Where the Service Grows

Waymo’s post lists the new areas city by city. In Los Angeles it extends down the coast to the South Bay, adding Torrance. In Nashville riders can travel further south, including to the zoo.

In Orlando Waymo says it is nearly doubling its coverage area in the east, with enhanced service downtown. In San Diego it is heading north to La Jolla. In the San Francisco Bay Area it adds more areas in the south, including a new BART connection at Berryessa Station.

Waymo did not break out square mileage by city, and it did not say how many vehicles it is adding to cover the new ground, Electrek reports. The updated maps are in the Waymo app.

Wall St Engine posted the expansion on 27 October. The post says Waymo is adding nearly 250 square miles to its driverless ride-hailing service across 5 existing U.S. markets over the next week, lists the new areas in Los Angeles, San Diego, Nashville, Orlando and the San Francisco Bay Area, and notes the rollout expands where existing riders can travel rather than launching in five new cities. This piece uses the post alongside Waymo’s own blog post.

Young Markets, Fast Steps

Square miles: the nearly 250 Waymo is adding this week (Waymo blog) against Tesla’s ~254 sq mi Houston zone (Robotaxi Tracker, via Electrek) and Waymo’s Nashville (~60) and San Diego (~50) zones at launch (Electrek), 27 Oct 2026.

Some of these markets are new. Electrek reports that Waymo opened Nashville to public riders in April with a zone of about 60 square miles, and that San Diego went public on 1 September with roughly 50 square miles.

In May, Waymo pushed its coverage past 1,400 square miles across 11 cities, Electrek reports. It now says it operates in 15 US metros with more than 500,000 paid rides per week, according to Electrek.

The Tesla Comparison

Tesla is also drawing bigger maps. Electrek reports that Tesla stretched its Houston Robotaxi area to about 254 square miles this week, according to Robotaxi Tracker, which counts 34 vehicles in Houston.

On use, Electrek reports that Waymo logged 3.9 million rider-only miles per week in Q2 2026, while Tesla’s driverless fleet did 558,000 miles in its latest reported week, mostly in Austin. Electrek puts the gap at about 7x. The two figures cover different weeks.

The Money Behind the Maps

Waymo closed a $5 billion term loan earlier this month, its first debt financing, according to its blog. PIMCO, Blackstone and Sixth Street were the lead syndicated lenders, and Goldman Sachs was the sole lead bookrunner.

Earlier this year Waymo closed a $16 billion equity investment, the blog says. Waymo said the loan “will accelerate the continued expansion of our fully autonomous ride-hailing service across the United States and internationally.”

Connecting the Coverage

On 17 October we reported that Waymo plans Toronto robotaxis in 2028, its first in Canada. On 20 October we reported that Waymo targets Madrid riders in 2027, its sixth city abroad. On 21 October we reported that Tesla’s robotaxi miles grew 8x in a quarter to nearly 2M, and that Bolt picks Nvidia software for its 25,000-car robotaxi plan. Today we reported that Waymo veterans’ excavator startup Bedrock hits $4.1B value.

What’s new: Waymo is widening the map inside its existing US cities, not only adding new ones, nearly 250 square miles in a week.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the addition is large next to Waymo’s recent launches: Electrek reports Nashville opened in April with about 60 square miles and San Diego in September with roughly 50, against nearly 250 square miles added this week.

As we read it, area and use are different measures. Electrek reports Waymo at 3.9 million rider-only miles per week in Q2 2026 against Tesla’s 558,000 in its latest reported week, a different week.

As we read it, the expansion follows Waymo’s first debt financing earlier this month, a $5 billion term loan that its blog says will accelerate the expansion of its service.

Three Implications

FOR RIDERS Waymo’s post lists Torrance, the Nashville zoo, La Jolla, more of east Orlando and a BART connection at Berryessa Station among the new places.

FOR TESLA Electrek reports Tesla’s Houston area at about 254 square miles, with 34 vehicles counted by Robotaxi Tracker.

FOR LENDERS Waymo’s blog names PIMCO, Blackstone and Sixth Street as lead syndicated lenders on its $5 billion term loan.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Four Intelligence Moats.

The framework opens: “Every AI paradigm produces a different kind of moat.” It argues that what changes between paradigms is where intelligence accumulates and who can capture it.

As we read it, a robotaxi service accumulates its data on the road, and Electrek’s miles comparison is a rough gauge of how much road each fleet is covering. The framework was written before this expansion and does not discuss Waymo or Tesla.

What Is Not Established

Waymo gave a total of nearly 250 square miles but no figure per city and no vehicle count. The city launch sizes, the 1,400 square miles in May, the Tesla figures and the miles comparison are as Electrek reports them; Tesla’s Houston area and vehicle count come from the third-party Robotaxi Tracker. The miles comparison sets a Q2 weekly figure against a different single week.

The Bottom Line

Waymo says it is adding nearly 250 square miles of driverless service across Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego and the Bay Area over the next week. Electrek says that is about the size of Tesla’s whole Houston Robotaxi area, and the expansion follows Waymo’s first debt financing, a $5 billion term loan.

A note on sourcing. Figures are from Waymo’s blog post of 27 October 2026 and its October 2026 post on its $5 billion term loan, and from Electrek’s 27 October 2026 report, which is the source for the city launch sizes, the Tesla figures and the miles comparison. Tesla’s Houston figures are from Robotaxi Tracker, as cited by Electrek. This is not investment advice.
