Business Pill · COMPARED WITH WHAT?

A one-minute explainer of year-over-year growth: comparing a period with the same period a year earlier. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this story.

The key insight: As we read it, the growth is accelerating through the year rather than levelling off. TSMC’s year-to-date growth rate has risen with each monthly report, from 37.0 percent after July to 41.1 percent after September, and the third quarter alone is up about 51% on our arithmetic.

Month by Month

TSMC’s July report put July 2026 revenue at NT$467.58 billion, up 44.7 percent from July 2025. Its August report put August at NT$514.81 billion, up 10.1 percent from July and 53.3 percent from August 2025.

September’s NT$511.86 billion was slightly below August, according to the September report’s table, which lists August at NT$514,806 million and September at NT$511,857 million.

Year-to-date growth has risen with each report: 37.0 percent for January to July, 39.3 percent for January to August, and 41.1 percent for January to September, according to TSMC’s three releases.

How We Built the Quarter

TSMC reports revenue monthly; the third-quarter figure in this article is our sum of its July, August and September revenue of NT$467,580 million, NT$514,806 million and NT$511,857 million.

The year-earlier quarter is the sum of the comparison months in the same reports: NT$323,166 million for July 2025, NT$335,772 million for August 2025 and NT$330,980 million for September 2025.

The Nine Months

TSMC’s August filing lists January-to-August 2025 revenue of NT$2,431,983 million. Adding September 2025’s NT$330,980 million gives about NT$2,763.0 billion for the first nine months of 2025 on our arithmetic, against the NT$3,898.73 billion TSMC reports for 2026.

The July filing also lists June 2026 revenue of NT$442,680 million, so August and September are the two months above NT$500 billion in the period these three reports cover.

The Structural Read

Monthly revenue stepped up in August and held. August was NT$514.81 billion, and September NT$511.86 billion, slightly lower but still the second-highest figure in the three reports.

The comparison base is not moving much. September 2025 revenue was NT$330.98 billion, similar to July and August 2025, so the growth comes from this year’s level, not last year’s dip.

The detail comes later. Monthly reports carry no breakdown by technology, platform or customer, so the share of this revenue tied to AI chips is not in these documents.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map.

The framework’s starting point describes 2026 spending by the largest technology groups as “the largest single-year concentrated infrastructure cycle in the history of technology.”

As we read it, TSMC’s revenue is where much of that spending ends up as a supplier’s sales. Its monthly reports do not split AI from other work, so the link is a reading of the cycle, not a figure in these documents.
