Perplexity Wins 1st Full FedRAMP 20x Class C; 26 Had Pilots

Perplexity Enterprise and API Platform is “the first cloud service to receive a full FedRAMP 20x Class C certification under the program’s Consolidated Rules for 2026”, MeriTalk reported on 4 November, citing FedRAMP. The FedRAMP Marketplace lists the product as FedRAMP Certified as of 28 October 2026, on the 20x type and the Class C (Moderate) profile.

FedRAMP’s own post of 2 November says 26 companies received limited pilot certifications while the new framework was built, over the 19 months since FedRAMP 20x was launched. It granted the first full Class C on 29 October, 65 days after the first Class A on 25 August, by our arithmetic.

Perplexity says agencies can get Enterprise Pro for Government through GSA’s OneGov offer “for $0.25 per agency through March 31, 2027”.

Business Pill · Distribution Advantage

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on distribution advantage. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Perplexity or FedRAMP.

The key insight: Perplexity Enterprise and API Platform holds the first full FedRAMP 20x Class C certification, MeriTalk reported, citing FedRAMP; 26 companies held limited pilot certifications first, and the full Class C came 65 days after the first Class A, by our arithmetic.

What FedRAMP Certified

The Marketplace entry, package ID FR2604643715, lists Perplexity AI, Inc. as the vendor, the phase as Ongoing Certification and the path as Program. It counts 2 authorizations, which the page defines as “Total Authority to Operate (ATO) and/or Authority to Use (ATU) letters, including initial and reuse authorizations”.

FedRAMP’s post does not name the product. It says it granted “the first ever CR26-compliant FedRAMP 20x Class C Certification to the first cloud service offering that addressed all of the rules developed over the 19 months since the public launch of FedRAMP 20x”. It adds: “This product is already used by agencies based on its pilot 20x Class C Certification”. MeriTalk and the Marketplace listing identify it as Perplexity’s.

The dates differ by a day. Perplexity’s post, dated 28 October, says “Today, Perplexity Enterprise has achieved FedRAMP Class C (Moderate) certification”, and the Marketplace status reads as of 28 October; FedRAMP’s blog gives 29 October. Perplexity says the certification “has been independently assessed by 360 Advanced, an independent third-party assessment organization”.

What Perplexity Is Selling to Agencies

Perplexity says the certification brings “live web search and source-cited answers within its certified environment”. It claims that “Perplexity becomes the only FedRAMP (Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program) Moderate SI service with live web search”.

The company says “Live search sits inside the boundary: a government user’s query is never shared with an outside search provider”, and that it “automatically applies zero data usage protections to requests identified as originating from U.S. government agencies”. It says its own web index “tracks more than 200 billion unique URLs”.

On channels, Perplexity says the certified product is sold to federal agencies through GSA’s Multiple Award Schedule, to state, local and education customers through authorized resellers, and to government contractors directly. How 20x Changes the Review

FedRAMP writes that “The FedRAMP 20x assessment is based on the idea of assessing the security capabilities by measuring outcome metrics supplied by the cloud service provider through Key Security Indicators”. The Consolidated Rules for 2026 were published in June, and the 20x pipeline opened in August, the post says.

It quotes the 2024 OMB memo behind the change: “FedRAMP should not incentivize or require commercial cloud providers to create separate, dedicated offerings for Federal use”. On demand, FedRAMP writes that “Nearly a hundred companies have already stepped across that starting line”.

Perplexity’s $0.25 OneGov price applies per agency until 31 March 2027, by its own account.

The Structural Read

As we read FedRAMP’s post, the product did not enter agencies with this certification: FedRAMP says it was already in use under a pilot Class C, and the full certification moves it onto the final rules.

As we read Perplexity’s post, the pitch to agencies is live web search inside the certified boundary, sold at $0.25 per agency through OneGov until 31 March 2027.

Three Implications

FOR AGENCIES Perplexity says the product is available through GSA’s Multiple Award Schedule, and Enterprise Pro for Government through OneGov at $0.25 per agency until 31 March 2027.

FOR OTHER CLOUD VENDORS FedRAMP says nearly a hundred companies have entered the 20x pipeline, which opened in August under rules published in June.

FOR PERPLEXITY The Marketplace lists 2 authorizations, and Perplexity says it is the only FedRAMP Moderate SI service with live web search.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework Inside Anthropic’s Permission Layer.

The framework puts it this way: “The governance layer sits at the intersection of capability, regulation, national security, access control, and geopolitical alignment.”

As we read it, a FedRAMP certification is one such permission: it decides which AI tools agencies can buy without building their own review. The framework, published in June 2026, does not discuss Perplexity or FedRAMP.

What Is Not Established

How many agencies use the product is not stated in the sources we read. FedRAMP writes that pilot-certified products are in wide use but that it “unfortunately lacks the necessary data at this time to properly demonstrate this in the FedRAMP Marketplace”. The Marketplace summary we read does not name the agencies behind the 2 authorizations, and none of the sources give Perplexity’s government revenue. We did not contact Perplexity, FedRAMP or GSA.

The Bottom Line

Perplexity Enterprise and API Platform holds the first full FedRAMP 20x Class C certification, MeriTalk reported, citing FedRAMP, after 26 companies held limited pilot certifications. Agencies can get Perplexity’s government tier for $0.25 per agency until 31 March 2027, the company says.

95,000+ executives read Business Engineer for the AI strategy frameworks cited by ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.

A note on sourcing. The certification was reported by MeriTalk on 4 November 2026, citing FedRAMP. Programme details and the 26 pilot certifications come from FedRAMP’s own blog post of 2 November; the listing details come from the FedRAMP Marketplace; product claims and the $0.25 price come from Perplexity’s blog post of 28 October. The 65-day gap is our arithmetic.
