New OpenAI models could come as soon as Friday, The Information reported on Wednesday, citing people with knowledge of the models. Those models could include the next generation of OpenAI’s Astra, Sol and cyber-focused models, the people said, and the outlet added its own caveat that model timelines could change.
Friday, 6 November, is 64 days after OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on 3 September, by our count from OpenAI’s API changelog. As of 4 November, GPT-6.1 Sol is 36 days old and GPT-5.6 Cyber, the purpose-trained cyber model the changelog lists, has been listed for 89 days, our arithmetic.
Business Pill · The Model and the Harness
An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on the difference between a model and the harness around it. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss OpenAI or this report.
The key insight: The Information reported that new OpenAI models, possibly the next Astra, Sol and cyber-focused models, could come as soon as Friday; by our count from OpenAI’s changelog, Friday is 64 days after GPT-6 Astra’s release and 38 days after GPT-6.1 Sol’s.
What The Information Reported
The item opened Stephanie Palazzolo’s column at The Information on Wednesday, published at 15:02 UTC, as a note ahead of the column itself. It reads: “Before we get to today’s column, a heads up that new models from OpenAI could come as soon as Friday, according to people with knowledge of the models.”
The next sentence names the model lines: “Those models could include the next generation of its Astra, Sol and cyber focused models, the people said.” The item gives no specific model names, version numbers, prices or benchmarks, and it ends with a caveat: “Obviously, including a caveat here that model timelines could change.”
The column itself, paywalled beyond its opening, is about security companies trying to bring AI agents under control. It opens with Cyera finding AI agents that had been sitting in a large financial company’s most sensitive data for more than six months.

TestingCatalog (@testingcatalog) posted at 19:49 UTC on 4 November 2026, relaying The Information, that OpenAI may release the next generation of GPT Sol and Astra as soon as this Friday, and that the release could get delayed. The account added that so far it had only heard rumours about GPT 6.2 Astra; the 6.2 label appears in the account’s own remark, not in the line it credits to The Information.
What Was Posted on X
At 16:48 UTC the X account @kimmonismus relayed the report with a screenshot of the paragraph, writing: “OpenAIs GPT-6.2 could come as soon as Friday, per The Information.” The “GPT-6.2” label is the X account’s; The Information’s text does not use it.
A model labelled gpt-6.2-astra had already appeared in Codex usage screenshots posted on X on 1 November, which we reported at the time. OpenAI had not announced a model by that name in any source we read.
Where Each Line Stands
OpenAI’s API changelog dates each line’s current release. OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on 3 September and called it “our most capable model, built for the hardest end-to-end work.” GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna followed on 22 September, and GPT-6.1 Sol on 29 September, which the changelog describes as being “for complex coding and professional work at a lower cost than GPT-6 Astra.”
On the cyber side, the changelog’s 7 August entry says Daybreak Red provides “separately approved access to purpose-trained models such as GPT-5.6 Cyber”. The newest entries are GPT-6.1 Terra on 26 October and GPT-6 Rosalind, a life-sciences model, on 30 October; the changelog we read on 4 November had no GPT-6.2 entry.
By our count to 4 November, GPT-6 Astra is 62 days old, GPT-6.1 Sol 36 days and GPT-5.6 Cyber 89 days. Friday, 6 November, is 64 days after GPT-6 Astra’s release and 38 days after GPT-6.1 Sol’s, our arithmetic.

Two days ago, at ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi, Sam Altman said AI went this year from mostly below to mostly above “our smartest scientist”, calling the comparison very approximate: OpenAI CEO Says AI Passed Top Scientists in 2026, Roughly.
The Structural Read
As we read the changelog, OpenAI has updated its model lines at different speeds: Sol moved from GPT-6 to GPT-6.1 within a week in September, while the cyber model it lists is still a GPT-5.6.
As we read The Information’s item, it names model lines rather than models: it says the release could include the next generation of three lines, without names, versions or prices.
The Information, 4 Nov 2026
“Those models could include the next generation of its Astra, Sol and cyber focused models, the people said.”
Three Implications
FOR DEVELOPERS OpenAI’s changelog lists GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-5.6 Cyber as the current models in the three lines the report names.
FOR SECURITY TEAMS The changelog says GPT-5.6 Cyber is reached through Daybreak Red, which requires separate approval and provisioning.
FOR RIVALS Two days earlier at ADIPEC, OpenAI’s chief executive said AI had become mostly smarter than the smartest scientists this year, calling the comparison very approximate.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Product Overhang Doctrine.
The framework says: “Models leave products behind, not the other way around.”
As we read it, the report concerns the model curve the framework describes: The Information says new generations of Astra and Sol could come as soon as Friday, 64 and 38 days after the current ones, by our count. The framework predates this report and does not discuss these models.

What Is Not Established
OpenAI has not confirmed the timing or the models, and The Information’s sources are unnamed. The report does not say whether the next models will carry a GPT-6.2 name, and it gives no prices, benchmarks or availability. The outlet itself says timelines could change.
We read the opening of the column in The Information’s own feed; the rest is paywalled. We make no forecast about the release.
The Bottom Line
The Information reported on Wednesday that new OpenAI models could come as soon as Friday, possibly including the next Astra, Sol and cyber-focused models. Friday is 64 days after GPT-6 Astra’s release on 3 September, by our count from OpenAI’s API changelog.

A note on sourcing. The release timing is The Information’s report of 4 November 2026, citing unnamed people with knowledge of the models, read in the opening of the column carried in The Information’s own feed; OpenAI has not confirmed it. Release dates come from OpenAI’s API changelog; day counts are our arithmetic. The GPT-6.2 label is the X account’s.
