The union at Micron’s Taoyuan plant in Taiwan said on 7 October 2026 that it has “obtained the legal right to conduct a strike and establish strike picket lines,” AFP reported. Of 2,258 eligible members, 2,012 voted, with 1,994 in favour and 14 against, union secretary Chen Yen-kai told a news conference.
The dispute is over how Micron shares the profits of the AI-driven memory boom. The unions want a one-off bonus of 83 months’ salary and a permanent system that gives 15 percent of operating profit to worker bonuses, paid quarterly. Micron said in September that its fiscal 2026 rewards for Taiwan staff are equivalent to 35 to 68 months’ pay.
Business Pill · WHY PROFIT GROWS FASTER THAN SALES
A one-minute explainer of operating leverage: when much of a business’s cost is fixed, profit rises faster than sales as volume grows. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this story.
The key insight: The two sides are arguing over the formula, not only the amount. The unions want a fixed share of operating profit, paid every quarter; Micron, by the union’s account, offers a one-off payment it sets itself. As we read it, a profit-share rule would tie pay to every future quarter of the memory cycle, which a one-off bonus does not.
The Vote
CNA’s Chinese-language report gives the full count: 2,258 names on the ballot roll, 2,012 votes cast, 1,994 in favour, 14 against and 4 spoiled, a turnout of 89.1 percent. The union said 88.3 percent of all members, and 99 percent of those who voted, backed the strike. CNA says the vote ran for six days and was counted on the evening of 6 October.
Jerry Lin, head of the Taoyuan union, said no strike date has been set, but that a “surprise strike” could be called via text message to members, according to AFP. He urged Micron to present “a concrete proposal” after its board meeting on 8 and 9 October, US time.
CNA reports that the union said there would be further action if Micron’s board meeting produces no concrete result, and that it plans to suggest employees take leave on 19 October to make their voices heard on Ketagalan Boulevard in Taipei. The larger Taichung union, which AFP says represents around 11,000 workers, told AFP its talks with Micron would continue as scheduled.

What Each Side Has Put on the Table
Micron said on 11 September that its Taiwan rewards for fiscal 2026 would be equivalent to 35 to 68 months’ pay, CNA’s English service Focus Taiwan reported. It said employees in Taiwan would receive at least NT$1.7 million in cash compensation, and that staff on the payroll since 29 August 2025 would receive a NT$1 million bonus.
The unions rejected that offer. AFP reports that they called the one-off payment insufficient and “clearly lagging behind” competitors. “What we want is to establish an open and transparent profit-sharing system,” Lin said, describing the company’s one-off bonus as leaving employees “at the mercy of management.”
In the Chinese-language report, the union says Micron previously paid profit-sharing quarterly at 10 percent of net profit, and points to TSMC, Nanya, Winbond and PSMC as Taiwanese companies with bonuses linked to profit. That history is the union’s account; we have not seen Micron’s.
Why the Memory Boom Is in This
AFP reports that Micron makes around 50 to 60 percent of its chips in Taiwan, and that its two unions represent 12,000 of 15,000 workers at the Taoyuan and Taichung plants. It reports record fiscal 2026 revenue of around US$133 billion, up 256 percent from US$37 billion the year before.
AFP also notes that Samsung Electronics averted a strike in South Korea by agreeing to distribute bonuses equivalent to 10.5 percent of operating profit to its semiconductor employees. Micron has said it has invested more than NT$1.6 trillion in Taiwan, which it describes as its critical hub.
The Structural Read
The union frames its demand as a return to an older rule. In CNA’s Chinese-language report it says Micron once paid profit-sharing quarterly at 10 percent of net profit, and asks for 15 percent of operating profit now. That history is the union’s claim.
The comparison set is the union’s, too. It points to Samsung, SK Hynix and Taiwanese chipmakers with profit-linked bonuses, and AFP reports Samsung’s 10.5 percent of operating profit deal in Korea.
The next date is Micron’s. The union has asked for a concrete proposal after the board meets on 8 and 9 October, US time, and has not set a strike date. The larger Taichung union says its talks continue as scheduled, AFP reports.

Three Implications
A FORMULA, NOT A FIGURE AFP reports that the unions are seeking 15 percent of operating profit paid quarterly as a permanent system, alongside a one-off bonus of 83 months’ salary.
A VOTE WITH A TIMETABLE The union says it holds the legal right to strike after 1,994 of 2,012 voting members backed it, and is waiting on Micron’s board meeting of 8 and 9 October.
TWO PLANTS, TWO TRACKS AFP reports the Taichung union, about 11,000 workers, is continuing its talks as scheduled while Taoyuan holds a strike mandate.
What Is Not Established
We read AFP’s English report, CNA’s Chinese-language report in the original, and CNA’s English report of Micron’s 11 September statement. We did not read Micron’s own statement in full or any response from Micron to the vote, and we did not contact Micron or either union.
The union’s demands and its account of past profit-sharing are its own. Micron describes its 35 to 68 months as rewards, and Focus Taiwan reports that average total compensation for entry-level engineers includes stock. As we read it, that range and the union’s one-off bonus demand are therefore not a like-for-like comparison.
The Bottom Line
Micron’s Taoyuan union says it now holds the legal right to strike after 1,994 of 2,012 voting members backed it. It wants an 83-month one-off bonus and 15 percent of operating profit paid quarterly; Micron says its fiscal 2026 Taiwan rewards equal 35 to 68 months’ pay. The union is waiting on Micron’s board meeting of 8 and 9 October, US time.
