Gemini Notebook’s Phone App Can Now Record an Hour of Audio

Google’s Gemini Notebook, the research app formerly called NotebookLM, has rolled out an audio recorder in its Android and iOS apps, 9to5Google reported on 27 October 2026, with a 1-hour capture limit.

Google first announced the recorder on 15 September, saying that “starting next week, you can use the new audio recorder in the mobile app to capture lectures and record your thoughts on the go.” 9to5Google says it is now “widely rolling out”; TestingCatalog, which spotted the feature on 28 October, said it “seems to be rolling out gradually.”

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on AI agents: software that moves from answering questions to doing tasks. It explains the general idea and does not discuss Google or Gemini Notebook.

The key insight: As we read it, Google’s recorder turns spoken audio into a notebook source on the phone, six weeks after Google first said it would arrive the following week.

What Google Shipped

According to 9to5Google, a new microphone icon sits between the camera and the “Create New” button at the bottom of the app. Launched from the homepage, a recording creates a new notebook; launched from the Sources tab, it is saved into an existing notebook.

9to5Google says recording continues in the background if the user switches apps or locks the screen, and that there is a 1-hour capture limit. TestingCatalog says the captured audio “can be used as a source for the Notebook afterward.”

Gemini Notebook’s mobile audio recorder: Google announced it on 15 September 2026 for “starting next week”; 9to5Google reported it widely rolling out on 27 October 2026. The six-week gap is our reading of the two dates. Sources: Google (16 July and 15 September 2026), 9to5Google (27 October 2026).

What Was Posted on X

TestingCatalog posted on X that Gemini Notebook on mobile can now record up to 1 hour of live audio, that captured audio can be used as a source for the notebook afterwards, and that the feature seems to be rolling out gradually.

TestingCatalog posted that Gemini Notebook will soon get Connectors, with Google Drive as the first and only one available at first, letting users search Drive files from chat; it says more Connectors are expected later.

What Google Said in September

Gemini Notebook’s mobile audio recorder: Google said on 15 September 2026 it would arrive “starting next week”; 9to5Google reported it widely rolling out on 27 October 2026, with a 1-hour capture limit. The week counts are our arithmetic.

Google’s 15 September post on new study tools says “your notes will live directly alongside your sources, meaning you can chat, cite, and build from them anytime, all while making ongoing edits.”

A footnote to that section says the feature “is supported on web and mobile for users (including U18) with English as the selected output language under settings.” The same post says college students in the U.S. can get one year of Google AI Pro for free, which it says unlocks 4x higher usage limits in Gemini Notebook.

By our reading of the two dates, the recorder that Google said would arrive the week after 15 September was reported as widely rolling out on 27 October, about six weeks later.

Where It Fits

Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July. Its 16 July post says “it’s the same standalone product, now doing more across the Google ecosystem.” 9to5Google says the recorder follows a Connected App integration added the week before and a Live button in the Chat tab for real-time conversation with notebooks.

Connecting the Coverage

On 27 October we reported that Google Meet now turns calls into Gmail drafts and tasks, Google’s other move the same week to turn spoken conversation into follow-up work. The same day we reported that ChatGPT adds iCloud Mail and Calendar plugins for all plans, OpenAI’s push to connect ChatGPT to personal data.

And we reported that Google gives LLMs a sleep phase to learn past their cutoff, from Google Research’s work on models that keep integrating new information.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the recorder feeds the notebook rather than a separate app: Google says your notes will live directly alongside your sources, and 9to5Google says a recording from the Sources tab is saved into an existing notebook.

As we read it, availability has limits Google itself set out: a footnote to its September post says the feature is supported for users with English as the selected output language.

As we read it, the timeline is the open question: Google said the recorder would arrive the week after 15 September, and 9to5Google reported it widely rolling out on 27 October.

Three Implications

FOR STUDENTS Google says college students in the U.S. can get one year of Google AI Pro for free, which it says unlocks 4x higher usage limits in Gemini Notebook.

FOR MOBILE USERS 9to5Google says recording continues in the background if the user switches apps or locks the screen, with a 1-hour capture limit.

FOR GOOGLE’S PRODUCT LINE Google says Gemini Notebook is the same standalone product as NotebookLM, now doing more across the Google ecosystem.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Four Intelligence Moats.

The framework puts it this way: “The transformer is a commodity now; what changes between paradigms is where intelligence accumulates and who can capture it.”

As we read it, a recorder that turns lectures and spoken notes into notebook sources is one place where that accumulation happens. The framework does not discuss Gemini Notebook or audio recording.

What Is Not Established

Neither Google’s posts nor the reports we read give usage figures for Gemini Notebook or the recorder. We found no Google statement on 27 or 28 October about the rollout itself; the rollout details are 9to5Google’s and TestingCatalog’s, and the 1-hour limit is reported by both rather than stated by Google in the pages we read.

The Bottom Line

Gemini Notebook’s Android and iOS apps can now record up to an hour of audio and turn it into a notebook source, according to 9to5Google and TestingCatalog, six weeks after Google first announced the recorder for lectures and notes on the go.

A note on sourcing. Rollout details are from 9to5Google (27 October 2026) and TestingCatalog’s post on X (28 October 2026). Google’s statements are from its own posts of 15 September and 16 July 2026, read on 28 October 2026. The six-week gap is our reading of the dates. This is not investment advice.
