An entry dated 9 June 2026 in the European Commission’s Digital Markets Act list of acquisitions says Apple will have the right to make employment offers to and hire certain employees of Huxe AI, a start-up whose app made personalised audio, and will receive a non-exclusive license to its intellectual property rights. MacRumors reported the entry on 9 October 2026.
Huxe had announced on 21 May 2026 that it was winding down. It removed its app from the App Store and Play Store that day, said service would end on 28 May and said all user data would be deleted on 29 May.
What the Register Entry Says
The entry is listed under Apple Inc. and dated 9 June 2026. It says Apple “will have the right to make employment offers to and hire certain employees of Huxe AI, Inc.” and “receive a non-exclusive license to Huxe’s intellectual property rights.” It adds: “Huxe provides a mobile application that creates personalized audio content.”
The entry describes two things: a right to make employment offers, and a non-exclusive licence. It does not describe Apple acquiring Huxe’s shares or assets, which is the wording the same register uses for several of Apple’s other deals this year.
The register is the Commission’s list of transactions notified under the Digital Markets Act. The register’s Activision Blizzard entry, for example, records that notification as received “pursuant to Article 14 of Regulation (EU) No 2022/1925”.

Business Pill · FORM AND SUBSTANCE
A one-minute explainer of form and substance: the label on a deal versus what actually changes hands. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this story.
The key insight: As we read it, the register entry describes a deal by what it grants rather than by what it buys: a right to hire certain Huxe employees and a non-exclusive licence to Huxe’s intellectual property, recorded after Huxe had shut its app in May. By our count, three of Apple’s ten entries dated 2026 take that form.
What Huxe Said in May
Huxe’s website still carries its notice dated 21 May 2026: “We’ve made the decision to wind down Huxe.” It continues: “The team is moving on to new things, and we won’t be continuing development of the product.”
The notice set out three dates. On 21 May the app was removed from the App Store and Play Store; on 28 May service ended at 10AM Pacific Time; and on 29 May, it said, “All user data will be securely and permanently deleted from our systems.”
MacRumors reports that Huxe was founded by former Google NotebookLM team members Raiza Martin, Jason Spielman and Stephen Hughes. The register entry names no individuals.

Apple’s Other 2026 Entries
By our count, the register lists ten Apple entries dated 2026. Grouped by the register’s own wording, three take the form of a licence plus a right to hire, four are purchases of certain assets with hires, and three are acquisitions of share capital.
The two other licence-and-hire entries are PromptAI, dated 9 January 2026, which the register says “develops visual intelligence for the home”, and Animato, dated 19 January 2026, where Apple will also “acquire Animato’s patent applications”. The register says Animato “develops and distributes software that creates virtual avatars for video chats and tutoring.”
The share-capital acquisitions are Q (Cue) Ltd on 29 January, which the register says is “developing a sensor-based technology for speech, biometric and audio interfaces”, MotionVFX on 16 March and PlasmaSolve on 1 April. The asset purchases with hires are Patchflyer, Play, SigScalr and Sonera, dated between 9 January and 8 May 2026.
The structure is not new for Apple on this register: an entry dated 3 April 2024 says Apple “will be granted a non-exclusive license to Mayday Labs Inc.’s intellectual property rights and will have a right to make offers of employment to certain Mayday employees.”
The Same Structure Elsewhere on the Register
Other companies have notified similar arrangements. A Google entry dated 15 December 2025 concerns its “offering to and potential hiring of certain employees of Hume AI Inc” and a non-exclusive intellectual property licence. The register describes Hume as “an audio AI research lab and technology company based in New York City, New York.”
A Microsoft entry dated 17 October 2024 records the hiring of “Mr. Mustafa Suleyman and 64 other individuals from Inflection.ai, Inc.”, alongside a non-exclusive intellectual property licence. A Google entry dated 6 April 2026 covers the proposed hiring of certain software engineers of Contextual AI with a non-exclusive licence.
The Google and Microsoft entries each add that the notification is without prejudice to the company’s view that the deal does not constitute a concentration under the EU Merger Regulation. The Apple entry for Huxe contains no such sentence.
The Structural Read
The register uses three kinds of wording for Apple this year: acquiring share capital, acquiring certain assets with hires, and a licence with a right to hire. The Huxe entry is in the third group, alongside PromptAI and Animato.
The same register shows Google and Microsoft notifying licence-and-hire arrangements with Hume AI, Contextual AI and Inflection, each adding that in the company’s view the deal is not a concentration under the EU Merger Regulation.
As we read it, the register is where these arrangements become visible: Huxe’s own site still shows only its May wind-down notice, while the Commission’s list records what Apple will receive.

“Huxe provides a mobile application that creates personalized audio content.”
Three Implications
FOUNDERS OF WOUND-DOWN START-UPS The Huxe entry records a right for Apple to make employment offers to certain employees and a non-exclusive licence, without describing a purchase of shares or assets.
READERS OF THE REGISTER By our count the register lists ten Apple entries dated 2026, three of them in licence-and-hire form; the Huxe entry names no individuals and no price.
COMPETITION WATCHERS The Google and Microsoft licence-and-hire entries each state the company’s view that the deal is not a concentration under the EU Merger Regulation; the Apple entry for Huxe contains no such sentence.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Nine Layers of AI.
The analysis puts it this way: “the AI economy is not a list of companies racing each other. It is a layered industrial stack”.
As we read it, the Huxe entry sits at the application surface of that stack: what the register records is a licence to an audio app’s intellectual property and a right to hire some of the people who built it.
What Is Not Established
The Huxe register entry does not state how many employees received offers, who they are, whether any accepted, what Apple paid, or what Apple plans to do with the licensed technology. TechCrunch makes similar points about the filing.
Apple’s Newsroom front page carried no item on Huxe when we checked it on 10 October 2026, and we have not read any statement from Apple or Huxe about the deal.
The Bottom Line
An entry dated 9 June 2026 in the Commission’s Digital Markets Act register says Apple will have the right to hire certain Huxe employees and will receive a non-exclusive licence to Huxe’s intellectual property, after Huxe wound down its personalised audio app in May. By our count it is one of three Apple entries dated 2026 that take that form rather than an acquisition of shares or assets.

A note on sourcing. We read the European Commission’s Digital Markets Act list of acquisitions, including every Apple entry dated 2026 and the Google and Microsoft entries cited, and Huxe’s 21 May 2026 notice in full on 10 October 2026. The founder names come from MacRumors, which we label. The grouping of Apple’s entries by structure is our own count. Nothing here is a forecast, and nothing here is financial or investment advice.
