Google Meet Now Turns Calls Into Gmail Drafts and Tasks

Google Meet now offers “next steps”, powered by Gemini and Workspace Studio, that draft a follow-up email in Gmail or send action items to Google Tasks after a meeting ends, according to Google’s Workspace Updates blog, in a post dated 12 October 2026. Google Workspace promoted the feature on X on 27 October 2026: “With one tap, your follow-up emails get drafted, and action items go straight to Google Tasks.”

Google says an extended rollout to Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains started on 5 October 2026, “potentially longer than 15 days for feature visibility.” The feature is listed for Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and the Google AI Pro for Education add-on.

Business Pill · AI agents

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on AI agents: software that moves from answering questions to doing tasks. It explains the general idea and does not discuss Google Meet or Workspace Studio.

The key insight: As we read it, Google’s pages put Gemini at the end of the meeting itself: the post-meeting screen now offers to draft the follow-up email or move action items into Google Tasks, once Take notes for me has captured the call.

What Google Launched

The blog post says users enable next steps “with one tap” in a section titled “Routines for this meeting” on the post-meeting screen. Google says it is “starting out with just two routine next steps, draft a follow-up email and add action items to Google Tasks,” and that “there are several more soon on the way.”

Google says next steps work for one-off and recurring meetings, and that users can turn on a specific next step across all of their meetings. “Take notes for me” must be enabled during the meeting for any next steps to appear, the post says.

Google Meet’s next steps by date, from Google’s own pages: the extended rollout started on 5 October 2026, the Workspace Updates post is dated 12 October 2026, and Google Workspace promoted the feature on X on 27 October 2026. OpenAI’s iCloud Mail and Calendar plugins for ChatGPT, from its 27 October release notes, are shown for context. Google gives no end date for the rollout.

What Was Posted on X

Google Workspace’s official account posted at 17:03 UTC on 27 October 2026 that next steps in Google Meet, powered by Gemini and Workspace Studio, draft follow-up emails and send action items to Google Tasks with one tap, from the post-meeting screen. The post is the announcement this piece reports; the rollout dates, editions and requirements come from Google’s blog and help page.

Who Gets It, and Who Controls It

For admins, Google says the feature “will be ON by default” and can be disabled at the domain, organizational unit or group level, through the Workspace Studio Admin settings or the Take Notes for Me setting.

End users manage their next steps from the Meet post-call screen, or in the Workspace Studio Flows library once a next step has been turned on for the first time, according to the post. Google’s help page says these flows are marked “system” in Workspace Studio, where users can turn them off and view their activity.

The Fine Print on the Follow-Up Email

Requirements Google lists for Meet next steps, by our count from Google’s Meet help page: five for any next step (a work or school account, smart features, Take notes for me and Ask Gemini, a Google Calendar event, a computer) and eight for a drafted follow-up email (adding: the user hosts, the meeting is not a repeating series, and at least one participant is outside the organization). Google says it is starting with two routine next steps.

Google’s help page lists what a user needs: a work or school Google Account, smart features in Google Workspace turned on, “Take notes for me” and Ask Gemini turned on during the meeting, a meeting that is part of a Google Calendar event, and a computer.

For drafting follow-up emails, the help page adds three more conditions: the user must be the meeting host, the meeting must not be part of a repeating series, and at least one participant must be outside the user’s organization. By our count, that is five listed requirements for any next step and eight for a drafted follow-up email.

The help page also says suggested next steps “vary or might not appear, depending on the content and settings of your meeting,” and that post-meeting next steps “cannot be edited, but they can be turned on or off.” The first time a user turns one on, Google says, an email from Workspace Studio confirms it; for draft emails, a Google Chat notification arrives when the next step is completed.

Connecting the Coverage

The post on X landed on the same day we reported that ChatGPT Adds iCloud Mail and Calendar Plugins for All Plans, from OpenAI’s release notes. On 23 October we reported that Grok Bot Gets Your Phone Apps as Claude Moves to Auto Mode, after SpaceXSI said Grok Bot can use Calendar, Reminders, Contacts and other phone apps.

On 22 October we reported that Microsoft Calls Its AI Stack ‘Model-Forward, Agent-First’. And earlier today we reported that Amazon’s New Engineer Guide Puts Outcomes Above AI Token Use, from a memo by Amazon’s engineering leaders.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the tap is the last step, not the only one: Google’s help page lists conditions before a next step appears, and suggested next steps vary or might not appear depending on the meeting.

As we read it, admins hold the switch: Google says the feature is on by default and can be disabled by domain, organizational unit or group.

As we read it, the routines live in Workspace Studio: Google says users can manage them in its Flows library, where they are marked system and can be turned off or checked for activity.

Google Workspace Updates, 12 October 2026

“Next steps help you transform meeting discussions into definitive actions, like drafting follow-up emails in Gmail or exporting action items to Google Tasks”

Three Implications

FOR WORKSPACE USERS Google says next steps appear on the post-meeting screen when Take notes for me is on, for one-off and recurring meetings, on Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and Google AI Pro for Education.

FOR ADMINS Google says the feature is on by default and can be disabled through the Workspace Studio Admin settings or the Take Notes for Me setting.

FOR FOLLOW-UP EMAILS Google’s help page says drafting requires the user to host a meeting that is not a repeating series and that includes at least one participant outside the organization.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework AI & The Great SaaS Bifurcation.

The framework puts it this way: “What emerges is a barbelled market structure where software companies must choose between racing to the commoditization floor or climbing to the embedding ceiling.”

As we read it, next steps sit on the embedding side of that choice: by Google’s account, Gemini acts inside Gmail and Google Tasks after a Meet call rather than in a separate chat window. The framework was written in December 2025 and does not discuss Google Meet, Gemini or Workspace Studio.

What Is Not Established

Google’s pages give no usage figures for next steps and no date by which the rollout completes. They do not name the “several more” next steps Google says are coming, or say whether the feature changes the price of any Workspace edition.

The pages we read do not compare the feature with Microsoft or Zoom products, and we have not added a comparison of our own.

The Bottom Line

Google says Meet’s Gemini-powered next steps, rolling out since 5 October 2026 to Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and Google AI Pro for Education, can draft a follow-up email or send action items to Google Tasks after a call, with one tap and with “Take notes for me” turned on.
