Former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt owns around 1% of Anthropic thanks to an early investment in the startup, Bloomberg reported on 19 October 2026, citing people familiar with the matter. Bloomberg said that sets him up for one of the largest individual gains from Anthropic’s planned public market debut.
Schmidt and Anthropic declined to comment, according to the report. Bloomberg said it is unclear whether Schmidt has sold any part of his stake since the initial investment.
Business Pill · CONCENTRATION
A short explainer on concentration, when a few big pieces make the total. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this story.
The key insight: As we read it, Bloomberg’s report puts a number on what an early check can become in this IPO cycle: around 1% of Anthropic, bought in a 2021 round that Pitchbook valued at $461 million, now measured against valuations Bloomberg cites in the hundreds of billions to trillions.
What Bloomberg Reported
Schmidt invested tens of millions of dollars in Anthropic’s Series A fundraising round, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to discuss private matters, Bloomberg wrote.
When Schmidt made his first bet on Anthropic in 2021, the company was valued at $461 million, according to data company Pitchbook, the report said. Bloomberg did not give the price Schmidt paid or how his percentage has changed since.

What Was Posted on X
Bloomberg posted its report at 23:35 UTC on 19 October, saying former Google CEO Eric Schmidt owns around 1% of Anthropic thanks to his early investment. By our arithmetic, 1% is about $20 billion at the $2 trillion valuation Bloomberg cited and about $9.65 billion at the most recent $965 billion valuation.
The Valuations in Play
Investors indicated last week that a fair valuation for Anthropic is in the $1.8 trillion to $2 trillion range, Bloomberg reported. It wrote that the high end of that range would value Anthropic at more than 4,300 times its Series A funding round.
At that value, the stake would lift Schmidt’s net worth by about one-third to nearly $80 billion, according to Bloomberg’s wealth index. Using Anthropic’s most recent valuation of $965 billion, Bloomberg said, Schmidt adds nearly $10 billion to his existing fortune of $57.5 billion.
Anthropic is set to begin formally marketing its initial public offering as soon as the week of 9 November, putting it in line to begin trading before the US Thanksgiving holiday, people familiar said earlier this month, Bloomberg reported. It said the debut is expected no later than the end of the year.
The Numbers, by Our Arithmetic
By our arithmetic, 1% of Anthropic is worth about $20 billion at a $2 trillion valuation, about $18 billion at $1.8 trillion and about $9.65 billion at the most recent $965 billion valuation. The same 1% of the $461 million Series A valuation would be about $4.6 million.
A $2 trillion valuation is about 4,338 times $461 million, our arithmetic, which matches Bloomberg’s description of more than 4,300 times. These are values of 1% at each valuation, not Schmidt’s cost or the size of his stake at each date.
Schmidt’s Wider AI Portfolio
Schmidt invests through several platforms including TomorrowVentures, Innovation Endeavors and his Hillspire family office, which Pitchbook associates with hundreds of venture bets, Bloomberg reported. It said his AI investments include Mistral AI, Reflection AI and World Labs as well as Anthropic.
If Anthropic debuts at a $2 trillion value, Bloomberg wrote, his Anthropic bet would top Innovation Endeavors’ early bet on Uber in 2011. By the time Uber went public in 2019, its value had increased about 1,400-fold to $82 billion, Bloomberg said.
The Backers Around Him
Anthropic’s other major backers include Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia and Microsoft, Bloomberg reported. Altimeter Capital, Dragoon, Greenoaks and Sequoia Capital each put more than $2 billion into the company when they led a $65 billion funding round in May, it said.
Bloomberg also reported that Anthropic’s seven co-founders are each worth $8 billion based on its last funding round, and that the company expects to match or exceed the size of SpaceX’s $1.77 trillion June IPO, according to people familiar.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the spread between the valuations is the story: by our arithmetic, 1% of Anthropic moves from about $9.65 billion at the most recent $965 billion valuation to about $20 billion at the $2 trillion top of the range investors indicated.
As we read it, the report also shows how the gains concentrate: Bloomberg says the seven co-founders are already worth $8 billion each, and several venture firms each put more than $2 billion into the company in May.
As we read it, the figure rests on people familiar rather than a filing, and Bloomberg says it is unclear whether Schmidt has sold any shares, so the 1% is a reported stake, not a disclosed one.

Three Implications
A REPORTED 1% Bloomberg puts Schmidt’s stake at around 1%, from tens of millions of dollars invested in the Series A, citing people familiar.
A VALUATION RANGE Investors indicated last week a fair valuation of $1.8 trillion to $2 trillion, Bloomberg reported, against the most recent $965 billion valuation.
AN IPO TIMELINE Anthropic is set to begin formally marketing its IPO as soon as the week of 9 November, people familiar said earlier this month, according to Bloomberg.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Nine Layers of AI.
The framework puts it this way: “Every headline, every valuation move, every strategic decision in the cycle lives inside one of these nine boxes.”
As we read it, Anthropic sits in the model layer, and the valuations Bloomberg cites are a valuation move in that layer. The framework was published in May 2026 and does not discuss Schmidt’s stake.
What Is Not Established
The 1% figure comes from people familiar, not a filing, and Bloomberg said it is unclear whether Schmidt has sold any shares. The report does not give his cost, the number of shares or whether the stake is held personally or through one of his vehicles.
The IPO valuation is not set. The values above apply 1% to valuations Bloomberg cites; they are not a forecast of what Schmidt will receive.
The Bottom Line
Eric Schmidt owns around 1% of Anthropic from an early Series A investment, Bloomberg reported on 19 October 2026, citing people familiar. By our arithmetic, 1% of Anthropic is worth about $9.65 billion at its most recent $965 billion valuation and about $20 billion at the $2 trillion top of the range investors indicated last week.
