Opaque Systems, the confidential-AI company that began as a research project at UC Berkeley’s RISELab, said in a blog post dated 13 October 2026 that it has a “new agreement with Anthropic that carries OPAQUE’s work forward.” The post gives no terms.
Constellation Research reported the same day that the structure is one where Anthropic licenses Opaque and brings on some of the team, and that terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Anthropic has not published its own statement that we could find.
Business Pill · LEAST PRIVILEGE
A one-minute explainer of least privilege: giving each user or system only the access it needs. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any organisation in this story.
The key insight: As we read it, Anthropic is taking on a confidential-computing team and its technology rather than building that layer from scratch: Constellation Research reports the structure as a licence plus some of Opaque’s team, and Opaque’s post says the agreement carries its work forward.
What Opaque Announced
Opaque’s post is written as a farewell to the company’s first chapter. It says the work began ten years ago at RISELab around enabling organizations to use their most sensitive data while keeping it private, even while it is being used.
The post says Opaque brought confidential computing into production AI environments, so that organizations could run AI workloads on sensitive data with hardware-enforced protections.
“Today, we’re proud to share a new agreement with Anthropic that carries OPAQUE’s work forward. We’re excited to see its impact continue in shaping how AI is built and secured,” the post says.

From Confidential AI to Verifiable AI
The post says Opaque later widened its focus from protecting data and models to proving how AI systems behave, which it calls verifiable AI: “replacing trust assumptions with cryptographic evidence of what ran, where it ran, and under what policies.”
It says that through AgenTrust and projects including Agent Governance Toolkit, TRACE, Confidential MCP and Weight Custody Manifest, Opaque worked with a broader community on trust and security challenges around AI agents and models. The post does not say what happens to those projects or to Opaque’s products under the new agreement.
How Constellation Research Describes the Deal
Constellation Research’s item, headlined “Anthropic licenses, releases Opaque in acquihire”, says terms weren’t disclosed and that the structure is one where Anthropic licenses Opaque and brings on some of the team. It names Aaron Fulkerson as Opaque’s CEO.
Constellation reports that Opaque partnered with Nvidia, Intel, Microsoft and Google on confidential computing, and that it closed a $24 million series B round “good for a $300 million valuation.” It also reports Opaque was adopted in Europe and the UAE and has been rolling out open standards for sovereign AI and on-prem deployments.
Constellation’s own read is that the deal makes sense as Anthropic increasingly courts enterprises eyeing on-premise deployments, open models and sovereign AI architectures. That is Constellation’s view, not a statement from either company.
Where This Sits in Anthropic’s Week
It lands in the same week we reported Anthropic preparing to share its first Q3 financials with IPO investors. On 14 October we also covered Harmonic Security, which said it built an integration with Claude’s Compliance API to give security teams visibility into Claude activity.
The Information has reported early talks between OpenAI and the security firm Trail of Bits; we have not been able to read that report in full and have seen no statement from either company, so we treat it as unconfirmed.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the product Opaque describes is proof, not just protection: its post says verifiable AI replaces trust assumptions with cryptographic evidence of what ran, where and under what policies.
As we read it, the deal is light on disclosure by design: Opaque’s post names no terms, and Constellation says terms weren’t disclosed.
As we read it, the buyer Constellation describes is the regulated enterprise: it says Anthropic increasingly courts enterprises eyeing on-premise, open-model and sovereign AI architectures.

Three Implications
ENTERPRISE BUYERS Opaque says its technology let organizations run AI on sensitive data with hardware-enforced protections.
OPAQUE CUSTOMERS Opaque’s post does not say what happens to its platform, customers or open-source projects.
AI SECURITY STARTUPS Constellation reports Opaque closed a $24 million series B round good for a $300 million valuation; the new deal’s terms are not disclosed.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework Inside Anthropic’s Permission Layer.
The framework puts it this way: “It is helping define the rules, permissions, and boundaries around frontier intelligence.”
As we read it, Opaque’s verifiable-AI work sits squarely in that layer: its post describes evidence of what ran, where it ran and under what policies.
What Is Not Established
No price, structure document or headcount has been published. Opaque’s post says only that there is a new agreement with Anthropic; the licence-plus-team description comes from Constellation Research. We did not find a statement from Anthropic.
The post does not say what happens to Opaque’s customers, its platform or its open-source projects. The $24 million series B and $300 million valuation are Constellation Research’s figures, not new disclosures.
The Bottom Line
Opaque Systems says it has a new agreement with Anthropic that carries its confidential and verifiable AI work forward. Constellation Research reports that Anthropic licenses Opaque and brings on some of the team, with terms not disclosed.

A note on sourcing. On 14 October 2026 we read Opaque Systems’ blog post of 13 October and Constellation Research’s report of the same day in full. The Information’s briefing on the deal is paywalled and was not read; we found no statement from Anthropic. Funding and valuation figures are Constellation’s. Nothing here is investment advice.
