Amazon Lets Shoppers Text Alexa After Blocking Meta’s Muse

Amazon said on Friday that a small group of U.S. customers can now text its Alexa for Shopping agent to search, compare and buy, with the option “expanding to more customers over the coming weeks”, in its own announcement. TechCrunch reported that the move comes after Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse from querying its site in September.

Amazon’s third-quarter release said Alexa for Shopping “was used by 400 million+ customers in the last 12 months”, as we reported. Meta’s Muse counted more than 10 million activations in its first six weeks, AMD’s chief executive said. By our arithmetic that is a 40x gap, though the two figures measure different things.

Business Pill · Agentic Commerce

An evergreen explainer on agentic commerce: what changes when the shopper is an AI agent. It explains the general idea only and does not discuss this story.

The key insight: As we read Amazon’s announcement and TechCrunch’s report, Amazon is taking its own shopping agent, which its third-quarter release says 400 million+ customers used in the past 12 months, into text messages, the channel outside agents such as Meta’s Muse use, after blocking Muse from querying its site in September.

What Amazon Launched

Texting “starts rolling out today to a small group of U.S. customers by invitation only”, Amazon said. Invited customers receive a text message; to start, they “accept the terms, link your phone number, and start shopping”. The contact appears in the phone as Alexa Shopping, Amazon said. Customers without an invitation can sign up on a landing page, and the option will reach “millions more customers in the coming weeks”, Amazon said.

By text, the agent can search for products, compare options, add items to a cart and “seamlessly complete the purchase on your behalf”, Amazon said. Its examples include a weekly grocery order, photo search for similar items, price alerts, order tracking and “up to a full year of pricing” history. Amazon said a request started over text will carry over to the Amazon Shopping app, Amazon.com and Alexa-enabled devices.

Amazon’s Rajiv Mehta, vice president of Conversational Shopping, said: “Now with Alexa for Shopping, your personal shopping agent is just a text away.” Amazon did not give a price for the feature in the announcement we read.

Alexa for Shopping customers in the last 12 months (Amazon third-quarter release) against Meta Muse activations in its first six weeks (AMD chief executive Lisa Su). The two count different things, so this is a scale comparison only.

Why the Muse Block Matters

TechCrunch reported that Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse from querying its site in September, and that the texting feature works “much like you can with AI agents like Muse or Instinct”. Amazon’s announcement does not mention Muse.

TechCrunch also reported that DoorDash said last month that third-party agents had placed only hundreds of orders on its platform, and that DoorDash plans to concentrate on its own text-based agent. As we wrote on 4 November, the retailers’ own assistants count users in the hundreds of millions, while outside agents count orders in the hundreds.

What is new here: Amazon taking its own shopping agent into the text-message channel that outside agents such as Muse use.

The Structural Read

As we read Amazon’s announcement, texting starts by invitation for a small group of U.S. customers and reaches millions more over the coming weeks; it names no fee in the text we read.

As we read TechCrunch, the timing follows Amazon’s September block on Muse and comes just before the holiday shopping season.

As we read our earlier reporting, retailers’ own assistants count users in the hundreds of millions while outside agents count orders in the hundreds; the 40x gap between Alexa for Shopping’s 400 million+ users and Muse’s 10 million+ activations is our arithmetic on different measures.

Three Implications

FOR SHOPPERS Invited U.S. customers can search, compare and buy by text, and a request started over text carries over to the app, the website and Alexa-enabled devices, Amazon said.

FOR OUTSIDE AGENTS TechCrunch reported Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse from querying its site in September; Amazon’s announcement does not mention Muse.

FOR READERS Amazon did not say how many customers were invited or whether texting carries any fee in the announcement we read.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Agentic Harness War.

The framework says: “The surface, not the model, governs autonomy.”

As we read it, Amazon is moving its agent onto a new surface, the text thread, while keeping outside agents off its own store. The framework does not discuss Amazon, Alexa or Muse.

What Is Not Established

Amazon did not say how many customers received invitations, whether texting carries any fee, or why it blocked Muse; the September block is as TechCrunch reported it. The 400 million and 10 million figures count different things (customers over 12 months versus activations over six weeks), so the 40x gap is a rough scale comparison, not a like-for-like one. We did not contact Amazon or Meta.

The Bottom Line

Amazon has started letting invited U.S. customers text Alexa for Shopping to search, compare and buy, with wider rollout over the coming weeks, after blocking Meta’s Muse from its site in September, TechCrunch reported. Amazon says Alexa for Shopping was used by 400 million+ customers in the past 12 months.

A note on sourcing. What Amazon launched is from Amazon’s own announcement. The September Muse block and the DoorDash comparison are as TechCrunch reported them. The 400 million and 10 million figures are from our earlier report quoting Amazon’s third-quarter release and AMD’s chief executive; the 40x ratio is our arithmetic and compares different measures. We did not contact Amazon or Meta.
