TCS Hits $3.1B AI Run Rate as HCLTech’s AI Sales Jump 78%

Tata Consultancy Services said on 8 October 2026 that its annualized AI revenue reached $3.1 billion in the quarter to 30 September, crossing 10% of revenue. HCLTech said on 12 October 2026 that its Advanced AI revenue was $219 million in the same quarter, up 78.0% year on year in constant currency.

Both Indian IT services firms now list an AI revenue figure among the highlights of their quarterly results, next to total revenue that grew in low single digits. HCLTech also raised the bottom of its FY27 revenue guidance.

Business Pill · RUN-RATE REVENUE

A one-minute explainer of run-rate revenue: annualising a recent period’s revenue to estimate a yearly figure. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any organisation in this story.

The key insight: As we read it, AI revenue has become a reported line of its own at India’s largest IT services firms: TCS says its annualized AI revenue crossed 10% of revenue at $3.1 billion, and HCLTech lists Advanced AI revenue of $219 million among its quarterly highlights.

What TCS Reported

TCS says Q2 revenue was $7,642 million, up 0.2% from the previous quarter and 2.4% year on year in US dollars, and up 0.5% quarter on quarter in constant currency.

Its release lists annualized AI revenue at $3.1 billion in Q2 FY27, crossing 10% of revenue. In its Q1 FY27 release of 9 July 2026, TCS put annualized AI revenue at $2.6 billion, up 13.6% quarter on quarter.

By our arithmetic on those rounded figures, the move from $2.6 billion to $3.1 billion is a rise of about 19% in one quarter. TCS also reports total contract value of $9.6 billion and an operating margin of 24.0%.

CEO K Krithivasan says in the release: “Together with our clients, we are building repeatable value platforms that will industrialize AI at scale.” Chief Operating Officer Aarthi Subramanian says “AI momentum remained strong, with annualized AI revenues now exceeding $3 billion.”

TCS annualized AI revenue as reported in its releases: $2.6 billion in Q1 FY27 (9 July 2026) and $3.1 billion
TCS annualized AI revenue as reported in its releases: $2.6 billion in Q1 FY27 (9 July 2026) and $3.1 billion in Q2 FY27 (8 October 2026), which TCS says crosses 10% of revenue.

What HCLTech Reported

HCLTech says Q2 FY27 revenue was $3,724 million, up 2.0% quarter on quarter and 2.2% year on year, and up 2.3% quarter on quarter and 2.6% year on year in constant currency.

Its investor release puts Advanced AI revenue at $219 million for the quarter, up 28.4% quarter on quarter and 78.0% year on year in constant currency. Its Q1 FY27 release of 13 July 2026 gave Advanced AI revenue of $171 million.

By our arithmetic, $219 million is about 6% of HCLTech’s $3,724 million quarterly revenue. The release also gives new bookings of $3,258 million.

The Guidance Change

HCLTech now guides FY27 company revenue growth of 2.5% to 4.0% year on year in constant currency. Its Q1 FY27 release gave 1.0% to 4.0%, so the bottom of the range rose and the top stayed the same.

Its services revenue guidance moved to 3.0% to 4.0% from 1.5% to 4.5%, which narrows the range at both ends. The EBIT margin guidance stayed at 17.5% to 18.5%.

Two Ways of Counting AI

The two figures are not measured the same way. TCS reports an annualized AI revenue figure, a run rate; HCLTech reports Advanced AI revenue for the quarter. The releases we read do not define which work counts as AI revenue.

For related coverage, we reported on HCLTech creating an Anthropic business unit to deploy Claude, and on TCS’s HyperVault AI data center campus in Hyderabad.

As we read it, at both firms the AI line is growing far faster than the business around it: TCS’s total revenue rose 0.5% quarter on quarter in constant currency, and HCLTech’s 2.3%.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the gap between the AI line and the rest of the business is the story the numbers tell: TCS’s revenue grew 0.5% quarter on quarter in constant currency, HCLTech’s 2.3%, while both AI figures rose much faster.

As we read it, HCLTech is putting its guidance behind the trend: it raised the bottom of its FY27 company range to 2.5% from 1.0% in the same release that reports AI revenue up 78.0% year on year.

As we read it, the two numbers are not comparable one to one: TCS gives an annualized run rate, HCLTech a quarterly figure, and the releases we read do not define which work counts as AI revenue.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Agentic Harness War.

The framework puts it this way: “AI moved from something you consult to something you deploy.”

As we read it, services firms reporting AI revenue sit on the deploy side of that line: TCS speaks of building platforms that will industrialize AI at scale, and HCLTech’s release says its AI propositions are resonating well with clients.

HCLTech Advanced AI revenue: $171 million in Q1 FY27 and $219 million in Q2 FY27
HCLTech Advanced AI revenue per its investor releases: $171 million in Q1 FY27 and $219 million in Q2 FY27, up 28.4% quarter on quarter and 78.0% year on year in constant currency.

What Is Not Established

Neither release says how AI work affects the pricing or size of existing contracts, so these documents do not show whether AI revenue adds to, or replaces, older services revenue. TCS does not give its AI revenue growth in constant currency, and HCLTech does not give an annualized figure. The 19% and 6% figures are our arithmetic.

A note on sourcing. On 13 October 2026 we read TCS’s press releases of 8 October and 9 July 2026 and HCLTech’s Q2 and Q1 FY27 investor releases in full. AI revenue, revenue and guidance figures are the companies’ own; the 19% and 6% figures are our arithmetic. Nothing here is investment advice.
