SAP’s third quarter of 2026 had two sides, on the figures in its quarterly statement and earnings presentation, published on 21 October 2026. Its current cloud backlog, the cloud revenue it expects over the next twelve months, rose 28% to โฌ24,144 million, about $27.1 billion. Its cloud gross margin slipped to 74.3% from 75.1%.
Chief executive Christian Klein called it “an outstanding quarter”. This piece puts the whole quarter in one table, sets the new outlook next to the old one, and links our four SAP pieces.

Sap Q3 2026 explained · video
The quarter in about a minute and a half, from our published pieces (21 Oct 2026).
The key insight: As we read it, SAP’s quarter has two sides: demand, measured by a backlog up 26% at constant currencies, and cost, measured by a cloud margin at 74.3%.
The Quarter in One Table
All figures are SAP’s, in millions of euros unless stated, non-IFRS where SAP reports both. Growth is year on year; the second figure is at constant currencies, which removes currency moves.

What Changed in the Outlook
SAP says it is “updating its cloud revenue and cloud and software revenue outlook”. It now expects cloud revenue “towards the upper end of the outlook range of โฌ25.8 – 26.2 billion” at constant currencies, and cloud and software revenue “towards the upper end of the outlook range of โฌ36.3 – 36.8 billion”.
It also expects current cloud backlog growth at constant currencies “to slightly decelerate”, against 25% in 2025, and about โฌ10 billion of free cash flow for the year.
The Four Stories Inside the Quarter
Our results piece covers the first quarter in which SAP’s revenue passed โฌ10 billion. Our knowledge graph piece maps SAP’s “Powering the Autonomous Enterprise” slide, which puts a knowledge graph under its AI agents. Our efficiency piece covers SAP’s target of a more than โฌ2 billion “efficiency run rate by end of 2028” from using AI on itself. Our cloud margin piece covers the 74.3% cloud gross margin, the lowest of the seven quarters on SAP’s margin slide.
How Others Read It
Bloomberg reported that “SAP reported higher growth for its cloud products than anticipated in a sign that the boom in artificial intelligence hasn’t undermined demand for the German software maker’s offerings”.

How We Read It
As we read it, the quarter speaks to the concern in Bloomberg’s report, that the AI boom could undermine demand for business software: the backlog grew 26% at constant currencies. As we read it, the open question is what running AI inside that software costs SAP, which the cloud margin figures do not break out.
The Structural Read
As we read it, the backlog is the strongest sign in the quarter, because it counts cloud revenue customers have already committed to.
As we read it, the outlook wording moved toward the top of SAP’s ranges while SAP expects backlog growth to slow slightly.
As we read it, SAP’s AI story sits in two places in the documents: the autonomous stack it sells, and the efficiency target it sets for itself.
Christian Klein, SAP chief executive, Q3 2026 statement
“Q3 was an outstanding quarter, with current cloud backlog up 26% at constant currencies.”
Three Implications
FOR INVESTORS As we read it, the fourth quarter tests two lines together: backlog growth, which SAP expects to slow slightly, and the cloud margin.
FOR SAP CUSTOMERS As we read it, the outlook and the AI slides point to more of SAP’s product moving into its cloud and its agents.
FOR RIVALS As we read it, SAP’s quarter shows a large software maker growing its cloud backlog while it rebuilds its products around agents.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework From SaaS to AGaaS.
The framework’s core line: “SaaS is charged for access to tools. AGaaS charges for the execution of outcomes.”
As we read it, SAP’s autonomous agents are a bet on the second model, while its backlog still measures the first. The framework does not discuss SAP.
What Is Not Established
SAP gives no revenue figure for its Business AI products and no breakdown of the cloud margin by cost. The outlook is SAP’s own. SAP says its backlog outlook is based on the assumption of “a stable macroeconomic environment in the fourth quarter”.
Connecting the Coverage
The four SAP pieces above sit alongside our Microsoft stack piece, which covers Nadella’s “model-forward and agent-first” letter of the same day.
What’s new here: the whole quarter in one table, and the outlook wording next to the cloud margin and the AI strategy.
The Bottom Line
SAP’s current cloud backlog rose 28% to โฌ24.1 billion and it now expects cloud revenue towards the upper end of its range, while its cloud gross margin slipped to 74.3%.
